CentOS 5 64-bits support (desktop environment)

Hello, Does CentOS 5 use a better approach to 64-bits and 32-bits packages existing on the same machine? How is Upstream package selection comparing 32-bits and 64-bits editions? Should we expect third-party repositories (mainly rpmforge) to better support 64-bits packages? I want to figure out if I should use CentOS/RHEL 5 x86_64 in desktop environment.

I have a IBM Thinkpad 380XD and I like to config the sound card in CentOS 4.4 Also how do you configure CentOS for WiFi using ZyDAS USB WLAN card so it uses this this card for internet. and find how to uninstall open office 1.1.5 if I delete the folder ooo-1.1

bonding

I four nodes setup to do active-backup bonding and the drivers loaded for the bonded network interfaces vary between tg3 and e100. All interfaces with the e100 driver loaded report errors much like what you see here: bonding: bond0: link status definitely down for interface eth2, disabling it e100: eth2: e100_watchdog: link up, 100Mbps, full-duplex bonding: bond0: link status definitely up for interface eth2. This happens all day on every node. I have configured the bonding module to do MII link monitoring at a frequency of 100 milliseconds and it is using basic carrier link detection to test if the interface is alive or not. There was no custom building of any modules on these nodes and the o/s is CentOS 4.3. OK, the installation finished and the system booted. This is an attempt to upgrade 4.92 using anaconda. I noticed some problems. For example, network device was not found. I will later try a fresh install on the same machine to see if the issue is related to upgrading. Akemi

Dual boot problem with XP and CentOS4.4

Hi i am using CentOS 4.4 version individually. working very fine. but, when i try to install CentOS4.4 as a dual boot with windows XP, i couldn't install. its taking so much of time to show the installation screen. i have given my hardware configuration below, Intel Dual Core 2.8 Ghz Intel D945GCCR MotherBoard 1GB DDR Ram 80GB SATA HDD (western digital) this is the first time i am trying installation as Dual boot. please help me to solve this problem. -- cheers, SivaPrakash.SK

Upgrade from 3.x to 4.x via yum

Sorry for the noob question. I am trying to upgrade an older server from 3.x to 4.x via yum. Yum is resolving the original 3.x repositories and does not appear to be moving to 4.x due to the fact it still wants to use a 2.4.x kernel. Do I need to point yum to another set of repos in order to upgrade versions? Thanks -jeff

Relocating /boot and /

Due to the peculiar way that my root drive is configured (incomplete advance planning for Windows to Linux conversion), I have had thoughts about moving /boot and / to a different place on the drive. Current configuration is: sda1 - 30Gb primary partition (was the E: drive) sda2 - 120 Gb primary partition (was my H: drive) sda3 - 100Mb /boot primary partition sda4 - Extended partition sda5 - 4Gb swap partition sda6 - 145Gb / partition I was thinking about rearranging the disk to a more conventional layout where /boot is first, swap next, / next and the rest after that. It probably isn't necessary since the drive runs fine (well, almost - last night /boot developed a weirdity in its superblock and I had to recover with the install DVD in rescue mode and using the alternate superblock, but it's back up and running, having survived the boot fsck), but I was wondering if anyone had tried something like this before. Besides, having a backup (or new) /boot might not be a bad idea after last night.... Are there any serious advantages/disadvantages to having /boot in the middle of the disk and / after it? I was thinking that I could remove the 1 & 2 partitions, recreate them with a hole in between for a (new/replacement) swap, and copy the original partitions to the new locations, then update the grub.conf and voila! (I would hope....) I'm also wondering about complications from having the swap and / partitions inside the extended partition.... Comments / suggestions / feedback (preferably polite) welcome. Samba PDC

I have Centos 4.4 setup as samba PDC with LDAP, With Xp pro clients im able to join the domain, but W2k clients allways fails, with some error messages with wrong username password, even that I use the same username password as when joining the XP pro client to the domain Tronn

building rpms

Hello, I've got a centos 4.4 box and i'd like to make some rpms for it. My first task is to recompile an srpm removing some options to customize it. I tried rpmbuild, which worked on a fedora install, but that command wasn't available. What rpm do i have to install to make rpms? I've got rpmdb, rpm, and rpm-libs already installed. I thought the missing one was rpm-utils, but no go. Thanks. Dave.
