Question on installing 2.6.18

Hi, I have a need to install 2.6.18 kernel. After I configure, make, make modules, make install (all that is good). The last thing I do is 'make install'. This also modifies grub.conf and adds an entry for my new kernel. However it leaves the old kernel as still the default. Is there a way to have it automatically set my new kernel as the default in grub.conf so when I reboot the new kernel is active. Thanks, Jerry

Centos SATA PCI Card

Generator Microsoft Word 11 (filtered medium) Hi there, I' m trying to build a home made NAS/SAN server using Centos 4. I have an old HP ML series server with support for IDE disks only. So I thought that I could by some pci sata controller to use sata disks that are cheaper and faster than IDE' s. My question is , does anyone have used the Conceptronic PCI Sata Card sucefully in CentOS ? CentOS Compatible Graphics Card for Second Life

Hi I have been experimenting with the Linux Alpha client for Seeocnd Life, but the graphics do not render properly due to incomptibility of SL with the on-board Intel graphics adapter. Can anyone recommend a graphics adapter that is both Second Life AND CentOS 4.4 Linux compatible that will plug into the PCI bus? Thanks very much indeed. Clive

Installing X on a Minimal Build

hey, any way I can install X onto the 'minimal build' via yum? I'd just reinstall, but am working with a 2TB system and it would take hours to re-do. Just curious... yum install __________________ I have rpmforge installed, so at least i'm pointed at the dag repos. -karl

Getting kernel source for 2.6.9-42.ELsmp

Hello! I need to get an arcnet device driver up and running. Normally it appears to be distributed with linux, but not installed. So, I need to compile and install it, naturally. So, where is the kernel souce for 2.6.9-42.ELsmp? I can find kernel source for 2.6.9. BTW, I obtained 2.6.9 and tried compiling it, but all I got was *.o files and insmod: error inserting 'arcnet.o`: -1 Invalid module format Seems that the rest of the /lib/modules/2.6.9-42.ELsmp/kernel/drivers/net appear to be *.ko files. Yes, I was able to get SATA working by going to AHCI (my BIOS has the option). However, for the DG965RYCK, as of kernel 2.6.9-42.0.3.EL, I will need to update the ethernet driver, the video driver (for X), and the sound driver(s). And I have still not fully investigated any possible penalties from booting with pci=nommconf (without which I can't boot). YMMV, as always. At this point, I'm going to hold off and see what upstream gets included in 4.5. The fact that fedora works makes me hopeful that the hardware support will work its way into the enterprise product. This IS a "holy war" kind of question! :-) Most people have strong opinions about this topic and tend to be very black and white about "this way is the best!". In the real world, different things impress different employers. Some employers give a lot of credibility to certifications, some don't. If you're trying to get a break into a certain niche, every little bit helps. The RCHE cert does require hands on effort, so it's not looked at as a "paper certification". Your IT background is pretty decent anyway, so it's not like you're really starting from scratch. Especially the Solaris and HP experience is relevant to administering Linux. Btw, I got started with CentOS for the same reason as you. I wanted to pursue the RHCE and couldn't afford to fork out the cash for a Redhat license. (Are you listening Redhat? CentOS is bringing you business because it helps IT people get experience and eventually certification with your product!)
