usb stopped working

Warning of protential probs with 2.6.9-42.0.3.EL update

Not sure yet what or where the problems are but having just done a jum update on my HP laptop (nw8240) and my IBM desktop from 2.6.9.42.0.2.EL the laptop is locking up during boot sequence and the desktop when running VMware Workstation seems to take all CPU and makes strange noises from the loudspeaker. Using grub to fall back to last kernel all is ok again !!. Ian

ERROR 1045 (28000) when trying to login into the mysql through user test1

hey friends, I am running Mysql server version: 4.1.20 on Centos 4.0. USB multi-card reader working, finally took the time

A thread on multi-cards 2 months ago, gave me a hint on how to get usb multi-card readers working: Quoting "J.J. Garcia" <stigmatedbrain(a)gmail.com>: "Have you tried putting it into /etc/modprobe.conf (options scsi_mod max_luns=32) and rebuilding initrd image after that? That's the way I was doing it so far, and it always worked for me. " So I then had to learn how to rebuild initrd image. Turns out that is mkinitrd (duh :-[ ). So I added to my /etc/modprobe.conf: options scsi_mod max_luns=8 Then: mkinitrd -v --image-version .... edited /boot/grub/grub.conf to use this new initrd, and now my MP3 players with internal and external SD cards are working properly. I am ASSuMing that once modprobe.conf is altered, as I get new kernels, the change will carry forward, and I will not have to do my own mkinitrd? I base this on my recent update to 42.0.3 and a new initrd file.

CUPS Problem

The Highlights: -CentOS 4.4 & CUPS -HPLIP Installed -Running as server, no GUI. -Can print from command-line no problem. -Printing from Windows XP via Samba puts job in the correct queue, job is processed but not parsed or rendered. The job is removed from the queue, but never prints. (I've RTFM and google'd it, no avail...) Help?? When printing from commandline (eg. cat file | lpr), this is the result I got. There may be minor differences, but I would not expect this much difference. Actually, further testing has shown that the write performance on the second machine varies anywhere from 20MB/Sec to 54MB/Sec depending on when I test it. Unfortunately, it appears random from my point of view. I'm still running tests to try to find a cause or at least a related symptom. The First system has Maxtor 7V250F0 drives (250GB). The second system has Seagate ST3500641AS drives (320GB). They are both 7200RPM SATA II drives with 16MB cache and NCQ support. -- Bowie

3Ware 9550SX-4LP Performance

I know there are a few 3Ware fans here and I was hoping to find some help. I just built a new server using a 3Ware 9550SX-4LP with four disks in raid 5. The array is fully initialized but I'm not getting the write performance I was hoping for -- only 40 to 45MB/Sec. 3Ware's site advertises 300MB/Sec writes using 8 disks on the PCI Express version of this card (the 9580 I think.) I'm guessing 4x PCI Express has more bandwidth but 133Mhz 64-bit PCI-X is no slouch. The only two things I need to change are to put the disks in 3GB/Sec SATA mode (they're in 1.5GB/Sec mode right now) and to enable memory interleaving on the motherboard (I only have two sticks of memory, this M/B needs 4 for interleaving.) But I don't think these things should drop me down to the write performance of a single IDE disk. Does anyone have any suggestions on improving write performance? In fact our development team has not realized that we took away their 4 dev boxes and replaced them with 1 physical server running running 4 virtual machines. (2 apache web servers and 2 tomcat application servers). We also purchased P2V from VMware to migrate several legacy WindowsNT boxes to VMware images which we are running on 2 beefy CentOS 4.4 servers. 2 x 3.4GHz Xeon 4Gb ram. Jeff
