I can try that, but when I tested on the first server, I found that disabling NCQ increased the read performance by 10M/s and decreased the write performance by 10M/s. Uneven CPU speed with CentOS 4.4 on a Mac Pro

Hi list, I've recently managed to install CentOS 4.4 on an Apple Mac Pro. Functionality-wise everything works great, but when trying to benchmark the system, I don't get stable runtimes, they differ by more than 30%. For example a benchmark run with our PDE solving code takes between 500 and 800 s on the completely unloaded machine. Suspicious kernel output (complete output attached): PCI: Probing PCI hardware (bus 00) PCI: 0000:00:03.0: class 600 doesn't match header type 01. Ignoring class. PCI: 0000:00:07.0: class 600 doesn't match header type 01. Ignoring class. and quite a bunch of APIC error on CPUx: 60(60). This is probably due to Apple's not quite perfect BIOS emulation code. According to /proc/cpuinfo the CPUs don't support any power managment, cpuspeed isn't running or even configured, and they are always shown as 2.66 GHz, which is correct. Hi, I just installed CentOS 4.4 x86_64 on our new 2 x Dual Core Opteron Server. First the system was unstable, but I after turning of Power-now it runs stable (anyone else experienced this?). However the following line in dmesg puzzles me: tg3: eth0: No interrupt was generated using MSI, switching to INTx mode. Please report this failure to the PCI maintainer and include system chipset information. Has someone else experienced this? What does it mean and who am I supposed to contact? Sorry if this is a stupid question, but a simple pointer would be appreciated. Apart from this message the system runs fine. Hardware Information: Server: Supermicro 816S-R700 Motherboard: Supermicro H8DSP-8 Chipset: ServerWorks HT2000 / HT1000 Processors: 2 x Opteron Dualcore 2.2 GHz RAM: 4 GB Ethernet is of course on the mainboard. I have already upgraded the tg3 driver with the latest version from Broadcom, but the line in dmesg still appears. regards, Andreas Micklei

Latest kernel fixes AMD cool 'n quiet

Just thought I'd follow up on my post from around august.... it seems that the latest kernel has indeed fixed the cool 'n quiet issues with my Athlon X2 3800. basically the following messages were appearing; powernow-k8: ignoring illegal change in lo freq table-2 to 0x2 powernow-k8: transition frequency failed and both cores were going at full 2.0ghz speed. Now with 2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp the errors have disappeared and both cores are running at 1ghz when the system is idle. I'm very surprised as I checked the changelog (rpm -q --changelog) and there was no specific mention of any fix that I could find. I had actually toyed with the idea of running another distro on the server as it lives in my garage which, obviously, has no Aircon and the summers here in Brisbane get pretty hot.

'Political' Questions on CentOS please

Hi I have used CentOS personally for 'ages' but i have some questions that i need answering from the wider audience. These are for management as i am proposing RHEL for our QA and Prd infrastructure and CentOS for dev. I would go CentOS for all areas but we need 'support' on our prd systems. Can anyone tell me roughly how many cpu's are running centos? How widespread is it, does anyone really know? How many developers are helping with CentOS? When did CentOS 'start' and how long will it be around for? I am trying to get an accurate answer to fend off the 'well it could disappear at any minute' argument. thanks guys

YUM needs older version

Sorry to bring this topic up again, but I am confused as to why yum needs an older version and how to resolve the problem. I get this error from yum: Error: Missing Dependency: httpd = 2.0.52-22.ent.centos4 is needed by package httpd-manual Error: Missing Dependency: libgcj = 3.4.5 is needed by package libgcj-devel Since most of this is outside my skill set, I am not sure if "yum resolvedep httpd" is the correct way to determine what is present, nevertheless, I got httpd-2.0.52-28.ent.centos4.i386 and libgcj-3.4.6-3.i386 for libgcj. That appears to be telling me that I have newer versions of both currently installed. Is that try? How can I resolve the problem? smbmount: mount() syscall gone bad ?

The reported that when issuing a smbmount command (both client and server are CentOS 4.4), it would take up to 30 second for the mount to complete. To make a long history short, by using strace and the source, I noticed smbmnt is first calling mount() using ascii options for *data. Then that would timeout, and it would try again using a struct, finally working. Looking at the source code, it will first try ascii if kernel >= 2.4, and fallback to struct if it doesn't work. So changing smbmnt.c to always using the struct first solved my problem. I also noticed that debian will always go first for the struct aproach. automatic shutdown of UPS (and RAID1)

I have an MGE UPS Pulsar Ellipse 600 USBS that I'm setting up with CentOS 4.4 I tried for some time to get it working with USB, but failed and I have had much more success using the serial port. I have managed to complete the whole install procedure (shown here: http://www.networkupstools.org/doc/2.0.1/INSTALL.html )but I'm lost when it comes to implementing the shutdown script. I'm also using Software RAID1 for all partions (/, /boot, swap, and two others). I've never edited shutdown scripts before and after a few days of Googling and manual reading I'm still not sure what to do. Is it as simple as just putting the script in a file in the rc0.d directory? I'm not sure what the file should be named so the script is run at the right time, and I don't know how to ensure the software RAID1 is ready to be powered off. Feel free to tell me to RTFM, just let me know which FM I should be looking at. :-) Here's the step I'm stuck on: 11. Edit your shutdown scripts: add upsdrvctl shutdown You should configure your system to power down the UPS after the filesystems are remounted read-only. Have it look for the presence of the POWERDOWNFLAG (from upsmon.conf), using this as an example: if (test -f /etc/killpower) then echo "Killing the power, bye!" /usr/local/ups/bin/upsdrvctl shutdown sleep 120 # uh oh... the UPS power-off failed # you probably want to reboot here so you don't get stuck! # *** see the section on power races in shutdown.txt! *** fi Be careful: that upsdrvctl command will probably power off your machine. Don't use it unless your system is ready to be halted by force. If you run RAID, be sure the arrays are ready to lose power. Your kernel's power-off routines may not execute. Make sure that the filesystem(s) holding your UPS drivers and configuration details are still mounted when that part of the script is run. You need upsdrvctl, ups.conf, and any drivers for the hardware on your system. --- Ben
