NTP and hardware clock

Hi, I had the following problem today. Because of a misconfigured network switch one system suddenly didn't have any network. After a reboot (with the network still unavailable) NTPD refused to start. Most likely because the initial ntpdate failed to work. I find this troubling, because when the network was restored, NTPD could have resumed working (like I'd expect from a true daemon). Now, what was more peculiar was that the hardware clock was completely off. I also had assumed that somehow the hardware clock was kept in sync, but now after rebooting without network, the system clock was skewed. Is there some way to: + Make ntpd run, even when no ntp-server could be contacted + Make ntpd synchronise the hardware clock automatically PS Yes, I know I can run ntpdate from cron or run hwclock to synchronize my hardware clock. But shouldn't this be part of the infrastructure (either ntpd or the initscripts) ? mbox corruption

Running CentOS 4.4, Sendmail... I've been experiencing some mbox corruption this week. Mail clients can't pick up mail and SquirrelMail gives an error.. of which the logs state "File isn't in mbox format". Is anybody else experiencing this? Any ideas about a correction? Cause? Thanks, John Hinton

Bowie, I had the same problem yesterday on my laptop with SIS5513 chipset. I've tried acpi=off and nomodprobe - didn't help I will come back to that problem when I will have time, but what I will do is disabling hardware initialization in default init level, and then I will try to play with audio module manually. You might do the same... Boot up from some live cd ubuntu works fine (I'm running it on the same laptop right now) and change init scripts. mpeg4ip (from Dag) vs CentOS 4.4 64-bit?

Anyone else on the list using these tools? I grabbed the latest iteration using yum from Dag's repository, but I get random segfaults on a fully-patched 4.4 system on dual Opteron 275's from some of the utilities. Perhaps, it's some 64-bit vs 32-bit-ism? I'm not much of a programmer (actually, I'm a terrible programmer) so any suggestions would be very much appreciated. :) The machine has otherwise been bulletproof so I'm reasonably sure it's something fishy with mpeg4ip. The problem must be with something else that loads afterwards. I have added some debugging output to /etc/rc.sysinit so that it prints the names of the other misc things it loads after audio. The next time it happens, I'll have a better idea of what causes it. -- Bowie

CentOS 4.3 Screen Timeout

Is there a config file that controls the screen blanking behavior? After a short time period the screen goes blank and you must reenter your password to get the desktop back. I would like to at least extend the timeout for this blackout/lockout behavior for my own convenience. Charles L. transfer data from one hard drive to another

Hello I have an OS installation and data on a 40 gb drive that I would like to image to a 80 gb drive. I don't care if the resulting partition layout on the new drive is only 40 gb making me lose space. I just want to move everything from the older drive because I think it's failing. I have looked at partimage and mondo rescue as imaging solutions but both deal with partitions. CAn someone plz point me to a howto that shows how to image the entire drive incuding mbr, partiton table and data all with one program? I am hoping to boot with a CD to do this while having both drives plugged in. So I think something like knoppix? TIA!

Server hangs initializing audio

I have a server that frequently hangs while rebooting. I see no errors, but during the boot process it stops at this stage: Initializing hardware... storage network audio The cursor sits just after the word "audio" and I have to do a hard reset to get out of it. This server has no audio capabilities, so I am thinking that I just need to disable the audio stuff so it doesn't even try to load it, but I don't know where to look. -- Bowie
