Cannot re-make a software raid pair

Apologies if you get this twice - the first one didn't seem to make it... Hi Guys, I have just replaced a faulty Max...woah, wait...this one's a Seagate... IDE hard disk but I cannot remake the software raid pair. The currently running disk is hda and I am trying to add back hdg - both are master drives on separate controllers. I have run fdisk on hdg and created the same partition structure as had and changed their types to 'fd' but when I try and rebuild the array I get: mdadm /dev/md0 -a /dev/hdg1 mdadm: hot add failed for /dev/hdg1: Invalid argument If I look at /var/log/messages, I have: Oct 5 16:04:39 petdoctors kernel: md: could not bd_claim hdg1. Oct 5 16:04:39 petdoctors kernel: md: error, md_import_device() returned -16 >From other postings, this seems to imply the hdg1 partition is mounted but I can find no evidence of this (df or cat /proc/mounts or lsof). I have done sone googling and found others having fun with this but no specific solution. Anyone? Thanks Nigel Kendrick

3.x box - lilo - hosed bootloader

Hi Updated the firmware on a PERC RAID card as it was out of date and causing a monitoring error - Everything went fine but on the reboot the box now tells me it cant find a valid boot device - I am thinking maybe somehow the boot block on the logical disk is shot. Can anyone advise me on how to rebuild the bootloader on lilo using a rescue CD? thanks

whacked keyboard behavior CLI

Hi there --- for some reason I am getting really weird keyboard behavior on the CLI (no xfs or anything running). Centos 4.4 yummed up. For example if i type "root" to login, I get "rot" or sometimes "roooooot". Then other times I will have to press a key like 3 times to get a double character. Now at first I thought maybe it was the keyboard, but it seems to work fine when within gnome. In all honesty I think i just have to get a different keyboard, but wanted to see if anyone had any experience with something like this (before I returned it) and a way to fix for the CLI. I have tried the kbdrate command. The keyboard is a wireless belkin with a usb connection. Thanks in advance. d

Hi, I found the solution for using the 2.6.9-42 kernel with the Intel 3945ABG card. autoprobe for nVidia 6200 broken

I have the same problem on the install disks and on the Live CD: The computer locks as soon as the Xserver starts. I end up with a blank screen (color varies) with a moving mouse cursor. Nothing else. Nothing appears on the screen. Keyboard and mouse are inoperative. Even Alt-SysRq-R doesn't work. Only way out is the reset button (or maybe SSH, but I don't have another machine handy to try that from). I am expecting you to blame in on "upstream", but you can't blame the LiveCD on upstream. With the LiveCD, I can boot OK by using the VESA driver. The root of the problem seems to lie in the open-source "nv" video driver and my card. The proprietary "nvidia" driver works fine (once it is installed). With the install disks, I am stuck with a text install (and thus locked out of some of the LVM options I need). I have not found a way to override the autoprobed video driver except to use "noprobe", and I have no idea what drivers I need to install to do the install correctly. Wish list for fixes: 1. Fix (or update) "nv" driver so it works right with all 6200 cards. 2. Fix the autoprobe so it uses the "vesa" driver for my card (Gigabyte GV-NX62158D<P>). 3. Create option "xdriver=" on install disks, like there is on video disks. 4. Create option "noprobe-video" and let me tell install disk to use VESA driver. If I can supply any more information to help diagnosis of this mis-probe, I will gladly poke my system if you give me detailed instructions as to what commands to execute. Doing it from the LiveCD-4.4 is probably best and most repeatable. Ted Miller Elkhart, IN, USA

HELP: CentOS box won't shutdown

Hi We have a mission critical Dell rackmount server. I tried to reboot it via an ssh session and it just kept running! The command I used was: [root@vle tmp]# shutdown -r now Broadcast message from root (pts/0) (Tue Oct 10 08:28:44 2006): The system is going down for reboot NOW! Looking at /var/log/messages it says: Oct 10 08:28:44 vle shutdown: shutting down for system reboot But the server just keeps on running!!! I have an identical hot backup box and it happily rebooted this morning. Any suggestions most welcome... Thanks Clive

That's what I thought, but then I noticed all these pro-ftpd mods for mod_ldap and whatnot, and became... perplexed. Trimming the fat out of a Centos 4.4 Installation

Hi, just to avoid re-inventing the wheel, is there any document that can help me reduce even further a "minimum" installation of Centos 4.4 (BTW can you say 600mb is minimum)? I am in the process of creating a small Centos-4.4-based Asterisk box and I need to boot it from a CF card. Deleting useless packages will help me do what i want. Example: even a minimum install of Centos 4.4 (or Redhat EL for what is worth) includes CUPS, among other things. Any document hyperlink will be more than welcomed!!
