Switching HTTPD ports

I need to run Apache on a port other than 80, 81 or 8080. My other servers are using 80 and 81 (RH 9: 80; Windows Apache: 81). If I set the port in httpd.conf to anything other than 80, I get an error that a socket cannot be created for the port. No doubt it has something to do with security (did not have that problem with Win Apache, but Windows is Windows). Any suggestions on where I should look? Sound Events in Gnome

In Centos 4.1: The sound events in Gnome see to sort of work. The start up (login) wave file however never plays. Various event sounds once logged in do seem to work. The logout wave file barely gets a few notes off before the final exit back to the login screen occurs. What could be causing the startup/logout sounds from not working correctly? Is there a work around for this?

Feeling a little guilty...

This is the first time I have tried Centros and I must say that I am a very happy camper. But maybe my needs/goals are simple: I need HTTP and FTP servers that support Apache, PHP and Interbase (yes, that "funny" DB that runs and runs). RH 9 was like that and so was FC 3, BUT FC 4 was something else...could not even get it to install (like others). And this forum has been VERY helpful for me. But I do feel a litfle guilt (sure it will diminish in time) because of all of the hours RH put into making RHEL 4 work smoothly. Of course the guys and gals on this forum are my support...not RH and so far nobdy has sent me a bill :-) ! Thanks to all as I go about installing Firebird (Interbase) and making an interbase.so file. Todd P.S. And thanks for putting up with my questions. ssh pre-shared key

I might be going crazy... perhaps my notes and memory has failed me but it ain't working... on host machine... ssh-keygen -t rsa ssh-keygen -t dsa scp *pub root@remote:/root on remote machine... cat /root/id_{r,d}sa.pub >> /root/.ssh/authorizedkeys_2 but it still asks for password when I try to connect as root from remote host logsAug 18 15:51:13 srv1 sshd[1630]: Accepted password for root from ::ffff:192.168.2.2 port 51728 ssh2 on /var/log/secure on host machine show connection but as an ipv6 address...is this the problem? Choosing to put CentOS in terms of itself ...

I've been reading back through the archives, really detailed, especially a select few people. And I promise, this is the last time I'm going to say this. I think CentOS stands great on itself, and you don't need to define many things is dislike of other distro. I know many of us (at least us Americans) like to put things in terms of "versus" as much as we can. And I am too verbose, too "I see good in everything" and support so many different flavors that there's always something to dislike about what I say. The sad this is that whenever someone comes in, and I try to explain where Fedora Core fits in, other people come back in and assert things on Fedora Core. I have shown how Fedora Core is built, just like Red Hat Linux before it. I have painstakenly _not_ put things in terms of "black'n white," but very detailed, very verbose statements. I don't do this because I'm defending any distro, but so people know what issues they will run into -- because it's not about choice of brand names (we already had that in the Windows world) -- but choice of the best technology how we can get it. It might be "animal farmish" but we're all standing on the shoulders of others, and I don't dare say who's better than another. In fact, because of my neutrality and wiliness to see things from different perspectives. IN A NUTSHELL ... If you re-read through my posts, all I'm doing is stating _positives_ of solutions. I'm giving _options_ for people and letting _them_ choose. Many people can see that, and they don't mind that. I think those people who remind me of this. But there are people who regularly see any positive statement I make as a negative to their agendas, for whatever reasons. There continues to be a revisionist history that people want to infer about one company, and my only mistake is to remind people of what I've said time and time again. And no, I'm not being "black'n white" -- I'm being positive from _all_ points. I'm not the one taking things so negatively, but showing the vantage points of the approach and technology, because they _do_ overlap. One thing you will never see me do is take something and not understand why. I strive to understand why, what it affects and how that affects things. Again, I have explained many things, Fedora Core, enough times now that I know the regulars are sick. But understand I am _not_ the only one in these threads, and some people seem to wait to point _until_ they come up -- and not bother to help people with other questions. They can't complain about me without being hypocrites in return. Now I experimented with only helping people off-list at the end of last week and over the weekend. I think I'll go back to that for the sanity of everyone on the list. But really, I hope people do go back and read what I've posted -- and the fact that I'm _always_ naming _positives_ of solutions, and _giving_choice_. I don't do this because I think I'm "better," I do it because I believe it's important to understand not only why, but how that affects everything else. -- Bryan J. Mouse Problems

Hello Folks, I hope that you are well. I have installed CentOS 4.1 and I have an MS mouse. The mouse pointer can be moved around BUT I cannot click on anything menus and such, even during the install the mouse isn't operational for clickage. Any thoughts. Any help would be most welcome. I am using an Avocent SwitchView MP, but its made no difference in installing Core 3 or any other OS. First, most SCSI or SATA based RAID controllers put some, if not all. the config info for the array on one or all of the drives. At boot they load this info so they know how the array is set up. Each different MFG uses a different table type to do this :( . With this said, if your first RAID 5 controller is made by (pick one) LSI Logic and you try to put these drives into a system with a (pick any other one) adaptec controller you will have NO LUCK. Second, The only way your drive migration is going to be seamless (really just move the drives and boot) is if: 1) RAID controllers are the same and running the same level of firmware. different levels of firmware may store different config parameters in a different order - but might migrate ?? 2) Same motherboard and chipset with same BIOS revision. 3) BIOS is set up identically so that the RAID array is the same device and in the same position in the boot order. Swap is hard coded into fstab and if the array is a different logical drive the O/S may not be able to mount swap This is not a Centos limitation, it's an operating system / BIOS / boot sequence function. greetings, it has been a long time and i do not recall all the specifics if one loads CentOS Linux on a machine with an PATA IDE or SCSI hard drive interface then i should be able to interchange that drive on virtually _ANY_ machine with an PATA IDE or SCSI respectively right?? (ignore physical connector differences on SCSI) i believe the answer(s) to be yes... now, what about the newer SATA? will it hold true there as well or are there enough minor differences in SATA creation and growth where one could run into an occasional problem? the bottom line appears to be that almost _ALL_ relevant hardware drivers from the past and the present are included in the distribution correct? can anyone comment on any major recent "gotchas" or other relevant situations they experienced in moving drives from machine to machine or ??? tia and regards, - rh -- Robert Hanson Abba Communications http://www.abbacomm.net

bonding

I am using the linux bonding, and on my new Centos-4 box I noticed that the ifconfig is slightly different. Now the slave interfaces report that they have an ip address, but the same config files in CentOS 3.5 showed that the slave interfaces were up, but not assigned an interface. Creating your own ACPI events to suspend?

I've been trying to get this laptop I just got to suspend. It's not working. I saw this bug report... http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=723 And I'm wondering if someone could point me in the direction of creating your own events to suspend the laptop. I've never done this before. Is it even worth it? Does Linux hibernate well? Preston
