preferences in used Compaq Proliant DL380 G1 vrs DL380 G2 etc

greetings, for those of you in the know, may i have some assistance in helping to make better decisions in purchasing more used server toys to install CentOS on please? :-) in the Compaq Proliant Rackmount DL380 line, the one that looks like the older 1850R is called a G1 meaning Generation 1 right? and then the DL380 G2 is a redesign that is gray and just has 6 drive bays up front correct? besides processor speed, do most of you prefer the DL380 G1 over the DL380 G2 or vice versa? would you mind providing some extra info and experiences please so i and hopefully others can better make decisions now and in the future? things to get. things to stay away from? please be as verbose as necessary i certainly do not know it all, is there anything else i missed or that you would like the list to know, please share... thanks in advance and sincerest kind regards! - rh -- Robert Hanson Abba Communications http://www.abbacomm.net

Nessus Installation Failure

I'm trying to get get nessus 2.2.5 to install on my centos 3.5 system. It errors out with this error: Press ENTER to continue x - Compiling the libraries x -- Configuring the sources for your system configure: error: Could not find OpenSSL and OpenSSL headers on your system **** An error occured :/ Do you want to save the compilation log to analyze what went wrong ? [y] Where should I save this file ? [/root/nessus_compilation] Do you want to delete /tmp/nessus-installer.11739 ? [y] rpm -qv openssl shows: [root@asskicker em]# rpm -qv openssl openssl-0.9.7a-33.15 Anyone have any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong or what I need to change to get this package to install? redirect crond(pam_unix) syslog messages

Hi guys: I could only find one answer for this topic via google, and the poster wasnt' sure if he was breaking something with his "fix". I there a way to redirect the cron session messages from syslog to a different log? i.e.: Aug 15 01:03:01 tn1 crond(pam_unix)[29303]: session opened for user root by (uid=0) Aug 15 01:03:07 tn1 crond(pam_unix)[29303]: session closed for user root I tried cron.none and crond.none (and the correspondine lines to put those in their own file) in syslog.conf but neither redirected. The other guys solution was: ===== I disabled the session line in /etc/pam.d/crond this line : session required /lib/security/$ISA/pam_stack.so service=system-auth to this line : #session required /lib/security/$ISA/pam_stack.so service=system-auth ===== But I'm not real comfortable with that. This morning I installed CentOS 4.1 on a Compaq Evo (Pentium IV, 512MB RAM) After the initial boot just after installing, the console if constantly filled with "eth1: mismatched read page pointers 0 vs ff". This message appears at least every 40 seconds. The same hardware was running RH9 and Ubuntu 5.0.4 without displaying any messages. RedHat changes to remove file system support

Anyone knows what RedHat did to remove support for other journaling file systems such as XFS, ReiserFS, etc. (considering these are supported by Fedora which is what RHEL is based on)? Would it work to simply take the Anaconda code (or subsection of it) and simply substitute that for the Anaconda code in RHEL/CentOS?

How do I get a "preferences" menu back into my panel?

For reasons I don't understand, there is no "Preferences" menu available in any of the drop down menus in my panel in Gnome. It was there before, but I'm not sure what I could have done to remove it or how it could be missing. How do I get a "preferences" menu back into my panel? Dave

Booting into GNOME

First let me thank those who have been of great help in getting a better understanding of loading Linux and using yum. In order to avoid having a read error from the installer after well along the process, I decided to try loading the minimal Linux and then installing what I need. But that is requiring me to expand my knowlege about the installation/boot process (not a bad thing). So, I used yum to install the GNOME grouplist and I set the ID in inittab to 5 so it would boot in the graphical mode. That did not happen, so I loaded the X-Window grouplist and it did bring me into the graphical mode (after asking me the setup questions I usually get when I do an install in the Graphical mod). Why are the questions asked at this point? Not when I was in the text/minimal mode. Since I have never done a text install, I do not know what I would have had to do to have the questions asked if I had stayed in the text mode (as I guess many do for a server only install). Now my main question is "how do I get Linux to come up in Gnome"? It is coming up in what I suspect is X-Windows.
