First, most SCSI or SATA based RAID controllers put some, if not all. the config info for the array on one or all of the drives. At boot they load this info so they know how the array is set up. Each different MFG uses a different table type to do this :( . With this said, if your first RAID 5 controller is made by (pick one) LSI Logic and you try to put these drives into a system with a (pick any other one) adaptec controller you will have NO LUCK. Second, The only way your drive migration is going to be seamless (really just move the drives and boot) is if: 1) RAID controllers are the same and running the same level of firmware. different levels of firmware may store different config parameters in a different order - but might migrate ?? 2) Same motherboard and chipset with same BIOS revision. 3) BIOS is set up identically so that the RAID array is the same device and in the same position in the boot order. Swap is hard coded into fstab and if the array is a different logical drive the O/S may not be able to mount swap This is not a Centos limitation, it's an operating system / BIOS / boot sequence function. greetings, it has been a long time and i do not recall all the specifics if one loads CentOS Linux on a machine with an PATA IDE or SCSI hard drive interface then i should be able to interchange that drive on virtually _ANY_ machine with an PATA IDE or SCSI respectively right?? (ignore physical connector differences on SCSI) i believe the answer(s) to be yes... now, what about the newer SATA? will it hold true there as well or are there enough minor differences in SATA creation and growth where one could run into an occasional problem? the bottom line appears to be that almost _ALL_ relevant hardware drivers from the past and the present are included in the distribution correct? can anyone comment on any major recent "gotchas" or other relevant situations they experienced in moving drives from machine to machine or ??? tia and regards, - rh -- Robert Hanson Abba Communications http://www.abbacomm.net

I am using the linux bonding, and on my new Centos-4 box I noticed that the ifconfig is slightly different. Now the slave interfaces report that they have an ip address, but the same config files in CentOS 3.5 showed that the slave interfaces were up, but not assigned an interface. Creating your own ACPI events to suspend?

I've been trying to get this laptop I just got to suspend. It's not working. I saw this bug report... http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=723 And I'm wondering if someone could point me in the direction of creating your own events to suspend the laptop. I've never done this before. Is it even worth it? Does Linux hibernate well? Preston

Starting a process at a specified nice value.

I wonder if someone could point me to the appropriate docs for my question? If I would like to cause my system to always start 'smbd' processes at priority 7 for example, how would I go about doing that. I'm assuming there's a better way than running a cronjob every minute to renice existing processes. I'd appreciate some help pointing me in the right direction. Thanks.

problems with AMD

Hello, i have a Pc AMD Sempron 2.6 and I downloaded Centos v4.1 to install as a Server. When I install the version 4.1 i386 the linux installation says "abnormally exited, you must safe reboot your machine". There aren't no compatibility between Centos 4.1 and AMD Sempron Processor? Die, KDE! Die! (Sticking with Gnome and Yum Conflicts)

Okay, I experimented with both KDE and Gnome, and decided I'd rather use Gnome. After making this decision, I wanted to remove KDE, because I like to keep my hard drive as lean as possible. I accomplished this, or so I thought, by running: # yum groupremove "KDE (K Desktop Environment)". It seemed to work. Removed a whole bunch 'o stuff. Okay, but then I wanted to install k3B, the CD burning software, which I'm led to believe is designed for KDE, but runs in Gnome.
