how to change default shell when using adduser/useradd

Hi, when I use useradd of adduser in CentOS 3 or 4, the default shell a user gets /bin/bash. I want this to be changed to /bin/false for security reasons... How can I accomplish this? Thanks in advance for any help. -- Michiel

joining samba to windows domain

Has anyone sucessfull update the kernel 2.4 to 2.6 on a centos server? If yes how? And what is important to now for the update. Maybe anyone has an faq for that. thanks for help Sven

External yum and apt Repositories and CentOS4

Were looking to use yum 2.1's ability to store repository data in /etc/yum.repos.d/ as a means of pushing updates to our mirrors list. As an added feature, we want to host third party repository config in installable .rpm's into CentOS-Extras. So that enabling a new repository becomes as easy as "yum install <repo name>". Eg. 'yum install repo- dag'. Which would in turn drop the required repository information into /etc/yum.repos.d/, set the enabled flag, import the required gpg- key. We are looking for package repositories, with public access who would want to be included in this setup. All supported architecture's are welcome ( x86/ia32, x86_64, ia64, s390(x)) as well as testing ( ppc ) for yum repositories. We do have apt available on x86 and ppc, so if you have an apt repository that works with CentOS4 on these architectures, we're interested. If you run a repository or know of one which should be included : Reply to this post here with details or send me an email. There are a few things that we ask for. 1) The repository must be complete in itself or require no more than the CentOS4 base and CentOS4 updates to pull required dependencies. 2) All packages in the repository must be signed. And the key available via public key-servers. 3) You must have both meta data ( via createrepo ) as well as the Header info ( via yum-arch ) available. And lastly, I need some recommendations on what to call these .rpm's repo-<Repository Tag>.<ver>.rpm is one option. - K

Squirrelmail

I have an urgent (isn't it always the way!) need to set up webmail for one of our users. I intalled Squirrelmail, added /etc/httpd/conf.d/php.conf and etc/httpd/conf.d/php.conf/squirrel.conf to my webserver config (which is not RH stock) and ran the squirrelmail conf.pl I know nothing at all about php, so am having a hell of a time diagnosing the errors, and the squirrelmail.org site knows of no RH distro after 7.3 and has been wikispammed anyway. Google's not been helpful so far. So... is anyone running squirrelmail on their CentOS site, and can they tell me why I'm seeing: Warning: main(../config/config.php): failed to open stream: Permission denied in /usr/share/squirrelmail/functions/global.php on line 16 Fatal error: main(): Failed opening required '../config/config.php' (include_path='.:/usr/share/pear') in /usr/share/squirrelmail/functions/global.php on line 16 when I try http://mymachine.mydomain.com.au/webmail/src/login.php Or point me at some useful doco, probably more PHP than squirrel? Especially as the squirrel site seems less than helpful... Perhaps someone can email me with RH specific instructions? Zebee

CentOS-4.0 (RC1) for x86_64 Official Release

The CentOS team is happy to announce the availability of CentOS-4.0 (RC1) for x86_64. This product supports AMD Opteron, AMD Athlon64, AMD AthlonFX and Intel EM64T CPU based computers. A bittorent for the 4 CD binary installation set (in .iso format ) is available from: http://beta.centos.org/centos/4.0beta/isos/x86_64/CentOS-4.0.rc1-x86_64-bin… The only way to download ISO's is via bittorrent. Please leave your download client running after the download is complete (with ports 6881-6889 open) as your client will become part of the peer to peer bittorrent network and reduce the load on our network mirrors. If you need some quick pointers for getting up to speed on bittorrent read: http://www.centos.org/modules/smartfaq/faq.php?faqid=24 The mirrors that host the OS tree are currently syncing. However, the BitTorrent is live now. --------------------- NOTE: This is a Release Candidate distribution build and may not be suitable for use in production environments. partition table Cent4RC1

I just installed CentRC1 on a Dell gx150 as a test. I'm running into the same problem I had with Fc3. I get a partition table error when trying to use ghost8 to create an image. I was considering putting Cent4 on a ProliantDL380, FC3 installed on that machine but wouldn't boot up, stuck on Grub. I had FC2 on the Proliant but when FC2 went to the 2.6 kernel, it hung up on the Nash prompt. So I ended up putting WBEL on that machine. I'm still evaluating what OS I want to finally put on there. Looks like Centos3 or a BSD. So my question is, does anyone know if RH will ever put the 2.6 kernel in RHEL3? I'm not getting a lot of warm fuzzies anymore from linux, since the 2.6 kernels have come out. I can hang with CentOS3 until 2008 as long as the kernel stays with something that works.
