Evolution Updated RPM

I realize that the Evolution included with 4.3 is not really 2.0, but it is not 2.4/2.6 either. Has anyone out there tried or successfully updated Evolution to the 2.6 version (or even 2.4) on CentOS? The OS is doing great on the desktop, I am however trying to use a Scalix connector that relies on some major changes that were done around 2.4 version of Evolution and it's Data Server. I have done a bit of digging and so far, to update to Evolution 2.4+ you would need a newer form of glib2 installed, which at that point would be a core update. Anyone have any luck or advice on this? Perhaps someone got the Scalix connector working on older Evolution (which would be ok with me). Something keep modifying cups config

Hello, I have the following line in my /etc/cups/mime.types uncommented : application/octet-stream so that Windows machine which can use the printer driver can print through the cups printer set up on a CentOS box. But something keep changing the file by commenting out the line. So sometimes printing from Windows would stop working and it the cups error_log I see: E [21/Mar/2006:12:58:34 -0500] print_job: Unsupported format 'application/octet-stream'! I [21/Mar/2006:12:58:34 -0500] Hint: Do you have the raw file printing rules enabled? All I need is usually just uncomment that line in /etc/cups/mime.types and restart cups. So I couldn't figure out what keeps changing the files. Am I not supposed to edit the file directly, or am I missing something else here ? Thanks for any help. RDB -- Reuben D. Budiardja Dept. Hi folks, I've now a new "usb-thing" attached to a CentOs 4.3 box in my room and just followed these steps to get it up and running, hope it helps. Sound Blaster Live! 24bit how to get it support?

Hi, I used to use the onboard sound card(SIS) and it work well with centos 4 stock and unsupported kernel. I have just got a new Sound Blaster Live! 24bit and installed it on the system. The current kernel does not detect the sound card. Is there anyway i can make this card run on centos? This is a fairly new card, why the stock kernel does not have the driver module compiled from it? [OT maybe] netcafe firewall

Hi all, I appologise in advance if this is a little OT, but I am building a box that will serve as firewall and router for a small 'internet cafe / netcafe' and am using CentOS... So here it is: What are the best tools to be used for keeping the potential script kiddies from 'harming the Internet' :) ? I specifically want to be able to detect and prevent portscans from LAN to Internet, and any other malware activity the clients might think of. I am particularily interested in 'the CentOS way'. For example I know there is psd module in patch-o-matic for iptables to be able to do the portscan detection in firewall... but, that doesen't feel like 'CentOS way' (because I have to build a cusom kernel) unless there is some kernel (even 3rd part, unsuported/etc.) that already has this in... Also I know of the portsentry tool, but the project seems pretty much dead after Cisco bought Psyonic... and again is not on up2date's list... I intend to use Snort, though I hope that it won't share portsentry's fate and become extinct after Check Point's acquisition of Sourcefire will be completed. No FUD intended on this, optimistic views are always highly welcomed :) Luckily denyhosts has no plans of selling itself to anyone so that's one project I can safely use :) So, Open Source portscaner for CentOS... anyone... ? :) Thank you for your time and help, With respect, Alex

Webserver redundancy - help

Hey Guys, I have 3 webservers rented with a datacentre. Each of them provides the same webservices to different clients. So clients A,B,C would log onto webserver 1. Clients D,E,F log onto webserver 2. Clients XYZ, log onto webserver 3. Each of the webservers provide the same services using apache, php & mysql. Data is collected from an application logged to sql and the users can view / manipulate that data over the web. My problem is there is no redundancy. If webserver 1 goes down then clients A,B,C have no services. I need to add in redundancy. I can't at the moment afford a 4th server. So I need to make do with whats currently there. Were talking about 100megs of new data on each server per day. Would something like mysql replication be the best bet? Anybody have any better ideas? Correct me if Im wrong but under replication wouldn't one server be a master and all others be slaves? So if I made webserver 1 the master then all clients would have to log into that one if they want to manipulate the data and if it goes down them Im screwed on all clients? I know I need a better setup just wondering whats the best way to go about it... Thanks, Wayne

/bin/false as a login shell

I see that /bin/false is not a valid shell by default on CentOS. It is f.i. on Suse. /bin/false is present, though. Is there a security reason for this? man says that nologin gives feedback that the account is not available while false just exits false. Anything against just adding /bin/false to /etc/shells?
