I'm attempting to learn Linux (on a CentOS setup) by doing something productive at the same time. I've already installed it twice...once with a "full, just install everything" setup and another by following the Perfect CentOS 4.3 Web Server Setup instructions on HowToForge.com. Though I've had issues with both, I have a lot of patience and time is not a big concern. What I'd like to do is get some advice from the community on a good initial setup for my system by listing out some of the things I hope to do: 1) Set up a test Web Server for development of a soon-to-be-deployed rework of a client's website (I'll host the production site w/ an outside company). 2) I'd like to learn PHP and Apache while I'm reworking the site. 3) Learn all there is to know (ok, maybe just enough to not be dangerous) about securing the server. 4) Develop a program, most likely in C/C++, that can talk with my Company's mainframe and its communications software, either through web services/xml interfaces or directly through some sort of COM / .NET equivalent. The end result would be an application that can run on any Linux box with an Internet connection, giving users the ability to access and modify mainframe data, enter orders, etc. 5) Be able to retrieve email, surf the net, write and read documents (general office stuff) to become both more familiar with Linux apps AND to keep from needing to run to a different PC for these needs when they arise. I know I'll need the X Windows and Gnome stuff, but I'm concerned about dependencies and/or conflicts between the packages necessary for everything I want to do. I certainly want to use the Terminal prompts whenever possible -- particularly for setting up the networking and Apache server -- so that I can begin to learn Linux/Unix. The question really becomes: Can I do it all on one box or am I going to create a nightmare for myself because of overlapping programs that "hijack" critical functions from the web server, or vice-versa? I erased my original install (with everything) because it seemed more important to me to learn what it was I needed and install it manually later on if and when the need arose. Good thinking or...? SSH problems (from the beginning)

I have 2 machines, one with CentOs4.3 (A) the other with WhiteBox 4(B). The machine A have a new installtion, the machine B has an already exists installation. The machine A has the installytion as is (except tah i choose an IP adress for eth0) 200.118.115.241 from the graphical interface on Hosts Label The machine B has eth0 and eth1, it works as proxy i can connect by ssh from A to B i can ping B from A i can not connect by ssh from B to A i can`t ping A from B if i do NSLOOKUP in A the reponse is Server inexistent What im doing bad? ----------------------------------------------------------- Sign up and get your 30GB webmail at www.30gigs.com now!

Yum curiosity: --obsoletes with update, useful or not?

Got a wild hair this A.M. and decided to inundate my two brain cells. "Man yum" includes this: update If run without any packages, update will update every currently installed package. ... assumed to be a shell glob and any matches are then installed. If the --obsoletes flag is present yum will include package obsoletes in its calculations - this makes it better for distro- version changes, for example: upgrading from somelinux 8.0 to somelinux 9. Hmmm. Cell number 2 doesn't forget much. I recall several admonitions that major upgrade should take the form of a new install. E.g. CentOS 3* to CentOS 4*. The paragraph above *seems* to indicate that a major upgrade might be doable? Moreover, it prompts the questions: 1) "What are the downsides, if any?" 2) "Has anybody tried it recently?" 3) "Have any results to report?" No pressing need, just curious. TIA -- Bill

Freenx Install problems

Hi All, I am new to Centos so please bare with me :-( I installed Freenx using yam install freenx Everything worked fine (or so it seemed) When I ran 'nxserver start' I got NX> 100 NXSERVER - Version 1.4.0-44 OS (GPL) NX> 500 Error: Function start not implemented yet. NX> 999 Bye I have restarted sshd but it still doesn't work. Anyone have a Howto for Centos? Any ideas? Thanks in advance Paul

I have tried to configure an ftp server on one of my machines, I want to all authenticated users to be able to upload files to the apache web root /var/www/html. This machine is behind a firewall/router and will not be exposed to the outside world. I want to know if someone can point me to a good tutorial on setting up one of these servers, I have read the man pages and googled for possible configurations and I still have not been successfull. small "$" issue with samba on centos 4x [dnk]

Good day..... This is a slightly older issue for me. In the past I had tried to install Samba on a centos 4.0 box, and the useradd tool on Centos 4 would not add the "$" character to the usernames being created. This showed up whenever a domain trust was trying to be established for a computer that was logging into the samba share for the first time. Maybe I messed something up, but it was not an issue on whitebox linux (which i ended up using for the install at that time) At any rate - I was wondering if anyone ran into this issue on the current 4.3 (or even 4.2 for that matter) version? I have another install coming up and I would * really * prefer to use the latest centos build. Thanks! Dustin

freenx-0.5.0-8.c4.noarch.rpm is in testing

We have created a new version of freenx (freenx-0.5.0-8.c4.noarch.rpm) and moved it to the testing repo. This is based on the code displayed at the LWE in San Francisco ... http://lwn.net/Articles/146825/ http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/8489 (though it is not officially released as stable by the freenx people) This version should handle printing and reconnecting to running sessions much better. Running sessions (on the nx server, that is the machine you are connecting to) are stored in "/var/lib/nxserver/db/running" ... if you have been disconnected in the past, there may be several old sessions out there that need to be cleaned up ... go remove the sessions that are invalid (all of them in that directory if you do not have any open sessions to that server). There is no real auto cleanup of these if your session breaks ... I will try to develop something that works later. In the meantime, if you session list is to big and some are dead, you will have to delete them manually. This version also allows rootless mode, which is faster compression. So far, this is a major improvement to my user experience for NX. ------------------ Copy the testing CentOS-Testing.repo file from here: http://dev.centos.org/centos/4/ to /etc/yum.repos.d/ , then use this command to install freenx: yum --enablerepo=c4-testing install freenx nx Report issues with this to the freeenx tracker here: http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=1307 ------------------- A guide for setting up the NoMachine client (to connect to the freenx server, if you installed it) is here: http://fedoranews.org/contributors/rick_stout/freenx/ (you only need to do the client items, as the server is taken care of with the above yum install). Hanging @ Sendmail During Boot

Hi All, I have a coupla queries about my 2 latest installs of CentOS 4-3. When I first installed and logged in as the initial user, everything went well, and the system was fast. A reboot, and 2nd login gave the same. But, upon connecting to the net, the system hung at sendmail for almost 4mins, and then gave an error at login about not finding the host, and that Gnome may not work correctly, with options of Continue or try Again. After that, the system has become extensively slow. Any ideas why this would be this way? This is the 2nd machine, different locations, different media, that this has happened. Rather annoying. I may not agree with everything they say, such as ISPConfig (I prefer webmin) but this tutorial offers a "step by step opportunity for newbies". Does this indicate that CentOS is now a "mainstream" distro? (Technically speaking its not CentOS 4.3 but CentOS 4 Update 3 but we are not into semantics).
