LVM performance with snapshots

I've been experimenting with LVM and snapshots under Centos 4.4 recently, and have found performance to be horrible while a snapshot of a logical volume exists. I expected some performance degradation with a snapshot in place due to my understanding of the copy-on-write behavior, but my system becomes almost unusable when writing to my system with a snapshot in place. For example, I can write a 4 gigabyte file in about 16 seconds with no snapshots in place, but the same file either takes about 4 minutes to write, or my systems seems to hang when a snapshot exists. The top and iostat commands seem to show very high iowait times and very low actual I/O throuhput, and pdflush seems to be quite busy doing something. Removing the snapshot immediately brought performance back to normal. Are LVM snapshots not recommended with Centos, or are there recommended ways to tune it for better performance? Thanks for any input!

What is the stack size?

I am installing the hsfmodem drivers for my ALI 5457 softmodem from http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/full/downloads-rhel40-i686.php The following warning is supplied: *Note:* The default stack size in original Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.0 kernels is only 4K. Because some drivers require more stack space to operate properly, we recommend using a kernel with a larger stack size if you experience problems or crashes. You can either rebuild your own custom kernel, or *get one of our replacement "stk16" kernels provided for your convenience* <http://www.linuxant.com/drivers/hsf/full/downloads-rhel40-kernel-i686.php>. They are identical to the Red Hat kernels, except that the stack size was increased to 16K. I ASSuME that Centos 4 also has a 4K stack? Should I increase my stack size to 16K and if so, how?

Problem with Promise Ultra100 controllers & 2.6.9-42 kernel

When I boot my Centos home file server with the latest kernel, 2.6.9-42.0.10.EL, the two Promise controllers installed in the system are unable to enable the 2nd IDE Channel on both cards due to a memory conflict. The error indicates that the next block of memory is already allocated. So the 2nd IDE channel on each card does not get enabled. Listing of the two controllers is below: 00:09.0 Mass storage controller: Promise Technology, Inc. PDC20267 (FastTrak100/Ultra100) (rev 02) 00:0a.0 Mass storage controller: Promise Technology, Inc. PDC20268 (Ultra100 TX2) (rev 02) Looking at "config-2.6.9-42.0.10.EL", the driver is enabled and compiled into the kernel. Both IDE channels on both controllers are enabled OK on the previous installed kernel which is 2.6.9-34.0.1.EL. Kernels before did not exhibit the current problem either. Anyone seen a similar problem or aware of a remedy? centos 5 beta and xen

Thank you for asking so nicely. I downloaded the ISO. I obviosuly installed the beta, I tried man xen, whereis xen... I launched firefox thinking the first page might have a link to a manual, etc... but no... Earlier when I tried to read the release notes I got a page cannot be displayed.... I tried doing "yum install xen" which resulted in a hung yum. So yes I have tried a number of things - but I did not find anything. Have a great day! Jerry

[CentOS5beta] kernel crash due to a known bug

After a successful installation of CentOS5 beta, I "successfully" crashed the system twice already. This is caused by a known bug in the cifs kernel module. The patch became available in January: http://www.kernel.org/git/?p=linux/kernel/git/sfrench/cifs-2.6.git;a=commit… FC5 and FC6 are running the patched kernel but, unfortunately, RHEL5 will not. Steve Dickson of RedHat says: "I will not be able to get these in the initial RHEL5 release, since that is currently lock down... very tightly... so I will try to get them in early in the 5.1 pool..." I am wondering...if it is possible for the CentOS team to apply the patch ahead of the upstream. Or I would have to wait for CentOS5.1? In that case, I will need to compile the cifs module with the patched file. Akemi
