Resizing EXT3 partition in guest instance CentOS5

Hi, I have two guest vm instance running CentOS 5 with ext3 partition. I will like to reduce 1 VM harddisk space and using the 'release' harddisk space to add onto my second VM. Basically I need to know how can I reduce and increase an ext3 partition in CentOS KVM. I did a search and basically i can do it by booting the VM using Knoppix and use Gparted to reduce and increase the diskspace. I am thinking of the following 1) Boot first VM using Knoppix 2) Reduce the ext3 partition disk size using Gparted 3) Shutdown the VM and resize the diskspace using Virtual Manager 4) Increae the diskspace of the second VM using Virtual Manager 5) Boot up second VM using Knoppix 6) Increase the ext3 partition disk size using Gparted 7) Reboot the second VM As this is the first time i am doing it, will these work? Anyone has experience resiziing their EXT3 partition in KVM environment before? Thanks! Regards yongsan

OT: Recommendations for a virtual storage server

Hi all, I need to install a virtual machine acting as a virtual storage server under CentOS 5.x (using kvm, xen, virtualbox or vmware). This virtual storage machine needs to server storage to another ESXi server and at the same time to the host where is installed. This is due to the limitations of hardware I have available. Both hosts needs to server several machines. It is very important that the virtual machine consumes the least resources possible (host has 5GB RAM and i need to run three virtual machines minimum, including this storage server as a virtual machine). How to send sysrq on "virsh console"

I have a KVM guest running on CentOS 5.5 that is in a bad state. I would like to dump the kernel information using magic-sysrq commands, but I cannot figure out how to send a break on the virtaul serial port provided by "virsh console". The guest is a standard install that will respond if I can send a break on the virtual serial port. Is it possible to send a break on the virtual serial port? Thanks, David

cluster of virtual machines using libvirt/kvm + Gluster

Hi guys, I posted this question at virt list on Fedora Project but I guess its a best place to ask help for my problem. I'm trying to set up two kvm/libvirt hosts, I installed the set of packages contained in @kvm and @clustering groups, downloaded and installed glusterfs version 3.1.2, configured the cluster ( all working ), configured the gluster volume and mounted it on /var/lib/libvirt/images. hot-plug vfb on Xen domU?

I want to give my clients access to their Xen domU consoles using VNC. This works great using vfb device configured as type=vnc. However I have 2 problems: * I can't figure out how I can add a vfb device to a running domain without restarting it (I have 100+ domU's I want to enable this on, and want to avoid restarting them all if possible) * Related, I can't figure out how I can change the VNC password without restarting the domU, as the password is specified in the vfb config. Is what I am trying to do possible? How? Centos 5.5 KVM GRUB / Virtio issue

I have a virtual machine that had been running fine using a RAW disk image (IDE). I am in the process of converting this virtual machine to use a single LVM and virtio. (For LVM backup snapshots and easy resizing purposes (no LVM within the guest)) I create the LVM and copied all the files from the existing RAW image to an ext3 under the LVM. However, I cannot get it to boot. It has to do with GRUB and I cannot figure out why the stupid thing is not working as it should. I boot the guest using the Centos 5.5 DVD and select Rescue and chroot /mnt/sysimage <><> fdisk -l shows: Disk /dev/vda: 21.4 GB, 21474836480 bytes 213 heads, 34 sectors/track, 5791 cylinders Units = cylinders of 7242 * 512 = 3707904 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/vda1 1 5792 20970496 83 Linux <><> cat /boot/grub/device.map shows: (hd0) /dev/vda <><> However grub cannot find the /boot/grub/stage1. I ran grub and did the following: device (hd0) /dev/vda OK root (hd0,0) Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83 setup (hd0) Checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exists... no Checking if "/grub/stage1" exists... no Error 2: Bad file or directory type find /boot/grub/stage1 Error 15: File not found <><> However, there is most definitely a /boot/grub/stage1 in the (hd0,1) - I copied the entire boot directory from the RAW IDE image to the LVM. Even 'find /sbin/init' fails. Now find works at all. My host is Fedora 14. What is odd is that I created a different virtual machine by going through the whole Centos 5.5 DVD Install process and that one works. In this non working case, I've copied the files over to the LVM and it seems GRUB is the only issue/difference. I can boot the DVD installed one and run the above grub find command and it finds the stage1 fine.

KVM usb to serial converter issue....

So I have something that I am trying to do in kvm that requires a usb to serial converter...that goes to a serial device. I pass the usb to serial device via a physical device and win7 discovers the device and assigns it a com port...all is good until I reboot win7 and I have to remove the device and re-add it from kvm...it then discovers it and assigns it a new com port. If I look in windows it appears that the com port it was originally using shows that it is in use..so I think that is the issue but not sure how to correct it so every time I reboot I dont have to re-add... my xml snippet... <hostdev mode='subsystem' type='usb' managed='yes' <source> <vendor id='0x067b'/> <product id='0x2303'/> </source> </hostdev> Any thoughts...would be appreciated...Thanks! :)
