Confused by "qemu-img convert"

Where is my qemu command?

KVM virtualization is full of wonders. :-/ I would need to attach an USB disk to a vm, but how? The command "qemu" would provide a way: [root@a134-224 yum.repos.d]# man qemu-kvm > QEMU(1) > NAME > qemu-doc - QEMU Emulator User Documentation > > SYNOPSIS > usage: qemu [options] [disk_image] (...) > -usbdevice devname > Add the USB device devname. But when I try it: [root@a134-224 yum.repos.d]# qemu start -usbdevice host:059f:1018 mail -bash: qemu: command not found That command syntax is probably ot right yet, but the main question is, where is qemu? I was tempted to yum-install qemu from rpmforge, but I would rather not. A question about memory ballooning

Hi all, How can I manage automatically memory ballooning under a kvm host (C5.6 and future C6)?? For example if I define a kvm guest to boot up with 512MB of RAM and I have configured 1GB as a maximum memory for this guest, how can I allocate this memory when guest will need it?? And the opposite question, can memory balloon be deallocated?? And is it possible to do this automatically or is an error to do this?? Thanks. -- CL Martinez carlopmart {at} gmail {d0t} com

P2v - Clonezilla method

I would need to migrate systems from physical machines to kvm. I am interested in the "Clonezilla method": http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Migration_of_servers_to_Proxmox_VE#Physical_ser… One question, though. How can one boot a kvm guest to Clonezilla? The only way I found was using qemu-kvm like this: > qemu-kvm –hda linux.img –m 512 -boot,order=dc Qemu (which provides this command) is not installed by default on my CentOS5.6 kvm host. Is it safe to install it, and use qemu-kvm commands? - Jussi

Extract ip address from a kvm guest

Hi all, Somebody knows how can I extract/know an ip address used by a kvm guest using a script?? For example I have the following guests: [root@kvmsrv01 bin]# virsh list --all Id Name State ---------------------------------- 1 linclunode01 running 2 linmgmt running 5 win7desktop running I know that linclunode01 has 172.25.50.1 as ip address, linmgmt has 172.25.50.2 and so on. But suppose that i don't know which ip address is used by win7desktop guest. The real fqdn for win7desktop is win7.local.net. How can I know its real ip using a script (bash, python, etc)?? KVM, virsh attach-disk problems

Greetings, list! I hope you forgive cross-posting - I only now found this list. I am in the process of configuring a KVM stack of about 8 vms. Mostly I am concerned about performance, as there will be a lot of I/O. My last problem is this: I try to add a fresh, unformatted disk partition to a KVM guest. I follow the directions given here: http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/5/html-single/Vi… First I check that the module acpiphp is present on the guest. It is. On the host I write: virsh attach-disk test1 /dev/sdb1 sda --driver tap --mode shareable - test1 is my guest domain - /dev/sdb1 is the name of the unformatted partition on the host - sda is what it is supposed to be called on the guest (the name is unused on the guest) - the example in RHEL Virtualization guide says "--mode readonly". This does not sound right for a hard disk; hence I try "--mode shareable"; the error (see below) however is the same, whichever I use Now, the command above produces this error. I find no google results with this error text. And the problem with this is that the new disk does not survive guest reboot. Cannot samba mount a remote windows disk

Hi, I would like to mount a remote windows disk as samba share drive but unable to do so on my host node. I tried it on my instances and it works so i am suspecting that perhaps firewall could be blocking it.
