Has anyone been able to start a Fedora 16 VM in Xen PV?

All, I've had a heck of a time getting Fedora 16 to run as a guest VM under CentOS 5.7 host as a paravirtualized Xen guest. I believe the issue has something to do with Fedora 16 using grub2... When I attempt to start the VM (via xm create), I get this error: Using config file "/etc/xen/fedora-workstation". Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/pygrub", line 686, in ? fs = fsimage.open(file, get_fs_offset(file)) IOError: [Errno 95] Operation not supported No handlers could be found for logger "xend" Error: Boot loader didn't return any data! In my kickstart, I had to create a partition for F16 as: part biosboot --fstype=biosboot --size=1 I didn't readily find the error when googling... Has anyone been able to run F16 as a PV guest? centos6 and xen4 dom0 memory allocation

Hi, This is slightly OT as xen is not officially supported in EL6. But maybe someone else is running it on centos6 as well and could help me out here: I have problems allocating a static amount of memory for my xen dom0. It seems to reduce when new domUs are created, even though I *think* ballooning is disabled. Can someone advise me what I'm doing wrong? I have xen-4.1.1-3 installed from http://xenbits.xen.org/people/mayoung/EL6.xen on my centos6 server. I am running 2.6.32-131.12.1.el6.xendom0.x86_64 kernel available from the same place. 'xl info' reports about available memory as follows: total_memory : 24567 free_memory : 3698 xen_commandline : dom0_mem=2048M and in xend-config.sxp I have: (dom0-min-mem 256) (enable-dom0-ballooning no) (total_available_memory 0) Now one would think that I should have 2048M memory for dom0, right? I started from there, but when starting domUs it has been reduced to 1140M even though I think ballooning is disabled and there is free memory available? And the weird thing is that dom0 has done some swapping: # free -mt total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 1140 1052 88 0 2 12 -/+ buffers/cache: 1038 102 Swap: 8194 85 8109 Total: 9335 1138 8197 Shutting down domUs and making more memory available does not reverse the effect, dom0 does not allocate more memory. Guests pausing suddenly

We have a CentOS 6.2 server with KVM. That server hosts 2 virtual machines, both with Centos 6.2, too. Regularly, one or both of the virtual machines pass to state "pause" without apparent reason. On resume, I do get have messages, like the following in /var/log/messages. Ed gave me the right clue that I was missing (and is apparently missing in a lot of the how-to's that I reviewed which only said to expand the LV, then expand the filesystem). I had to expand the partition before expanding the filesystem. So for my solution I rebooted that particular VM using SystemRescue LiveCD, then started GParted and expanded the partition which also expanded the filesystem in a single step. Then rebooted using the VM's image and #df -h now shows the expanded LV and a file system on the full space. Jeff

Resize guest filesystem question

Greetings - I am going through some testing steps to expand a logical volume and the corresponding filesystem on a KVM guest and have run across a deficiency in my knowledge. I spent the afternoon yesterday googling for answers, but had have come up blank still. What I am trying to do is resize the file system to use the additional disk space that I added to the logical volume that the guest uses. Here is what I have done and the details of my system. 0. Both my host and guest are running Centos 6.2. 1. My KVM host system has the LVM volume group that is divided into logical volumes which are then presented to the KVM guests as raw space. 2. A guest may use 2 or 3 logical volumes from the host system for its filesystem (/, /var, /data) and I have logical volumes named within the host system by guest and mount point so that I know what each logical volume is assigned to by it's name. 3. I expanded a specific logical volume on the host (/dev/vg/lv_guest1root) that is used by Guest1, and I can see in vgdisplay and lvdisplay that the logical volume was properly expanded. 4. I then issued a resize2fs /dev/vg/lv_guest1root command (on the host) to resize the filesystem to the expanded logical volume. This resulted in a message that it essentially couldn't find a valid filesystem superblock. Well of course then I realized that there is no filesystem on the logical volume from the perspective of the host. The filesystem wasn't set on the logical volume until the guest installation occurred. 5. So then I switched over to the guest system and ran df -h to see the existing filesystem [root@guest1 jeffb]# df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/vda2 4.5G 2.3G 2.0G 53% / tmpfs 1004M 88K 1004M 1% /dev/shm /dev/vda1 485M 30M 430M 7% /boot /dev/vdb1 2.0G 219M 1.7G 12% /var 6. Then I ran resize2fs /dev/vda2 and got the result that the filesystem is already xx blocks long. Nothing to do! So here is where I am stuck. Guest1 is my test system so it only has the / and /var logical volumes, whereas the production guest (guest2) that I will be expanding also has /data, which will be the logical volume that I will expand. So two things I did not do where, I did not shut down the guest VM, and I did not unmount the filesystem before asking it to resize. However my research before doing this did not seem to indicate that I had to do either, and the message about nothing to do also seems to indicate that they were not necessary. So I am missing a hole in my knowledge and additional googling has not helped to fill it. I must be missing something simple. Is this result due to the fact that I am testing on expanding the / filesystem, and it would work properly on a guest system that had /data? Do I need to unmount the filesystem, or shut down the guest VM, or mount the guest from a LiveCD? Or do I need to give it resize2fs /dev/vda rather than specifically /dev/vda2 ? I have allocated guests their processors on the basis that 1 core = 1 cpu. SELinux killed my qemu-kvm

All of a sudden, Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) on a CentOS 5.7 load will no longer run any VMs. The VM worked A-OK on the morning of 23 Feb, when I brought it up, applied the Microsoft updates, rebooted it, installed an application, rebooted again and ran several tests. Later that day, it wouldn't run. I didn't have time to diagnose, so I did some investigation a few minutes ago. Working my way through some checks, it appears to be an SELinux problem (new). new libvirt: CentOS 6.2 versus 6.0

Hi, About half a year ago I installed a stock CentOS 6.0/64bit onto an Intel server to virtualize our Linux fileserver and four WinXP boxes with rdp each. Since recent times I didn't do any upgrades of the server's OS. Now I have CentOS 6.2. After an upgrade I noticed that all virtual cpu name changed to QEMU Virtual CPU version (cpu64-rhel6) The new features were 1) The ability to specify cpu type and even exact capabilities 2) The ability to set the topology. It's good because before this ability appears WinXP guests won't use more than two cores. I got problem with both of these features. First, I can't manually specify cpu type 'qemu64' - virtmanager says my physical CPU doesn't have some abilities. But if no CPU is specified, it is reported as 64bit Second, a killer app on one of WinXP servers stopped working since upgrade. It's a russian proprietary accounting app named 1C ver. 8.1 (1cv8.exe). It would just hang loading single virtual CPU to 100%. I traced by trial-and-error that the problem is related to virtual CPU identification. Double checked. If I delete <cpu> part and thus leave it 'default', the application won't work. Third, initially I couldn't use more than two cores with single instance of WinXP because every core was identified as a whole CPU and WinXP is limited to two CPU's. So the idea is to allocate 4 cores and specify topology as 2 cpu, 2 cores, 1 thead. But if I specify ANY cpu topology manually, WinXP uses 100% of all physical CPU cores assigned to them even if guest OS's load is zero. By the way, I got this behaviour from the very beginning if ACPI was turned off for guest OS (which was default). So I rolled back to NOT specifying CPU topology and allocating only two cores to WinXP. Bad... BUT it started working properly after I did the aforementioned 'optimisation' for tnat WinXP instance. Now I have it with 4 cores assigned. Mystery! Help me please, what did I do wrong way? Unable to use all the memory available

Hello: As you can see from xm info below, we have almost 200GB of memory in our server running CentOS 5.2. But, we can't seem to allocate all the memory. For some reason, the total memory that can be allocated maxes out at 188.4 GB. None of the VMs has hit its own max-mem limit. Even when we set one of the VM's memory so the total is above 188.4 GB, its memory allocation stops when the total memory allocation reaches 188.4 GB. Thanks for your assistance. CentOS 6.2: Start and use guest as regular user under qemu-kvm?

Trying to set up a copy of CentOS 6.2 for home use and give each family member their own guest. Goal is to cripple the host so that no meaningful work can be done through it and each family member must use their own guest. "Gold Disk" masters would be kept of each guest, so if they screw it up, I can simply overwrite their current guest from the master. SELinux is enabled and sVirt separates each guest (I want to keep it that way). Default settings require a regular user to run the Virtual Machine Manager via sudo. Once they do that, they can see (and access) any other family member's guest. Would really like to avoid this. Have read several blurbs about getting qemu-kvm to run under a regular user, but not sure if the version provided with CentOS 6 is compiled with the options to allow that. When I follow the guidance to put users in the kvm group and change the ownership of key files, I fail. Appears to me that qemu-kvm with CentOS 6 is not set up (compliled) to run under a regular user. Say users are u1, u2, u3, and u4, and all are in the kvm group. What else do I need to do to allow them to start, suspend, and stop their own guest VM? Dave

virt-io drivers for 64 bit Win7 needed for USB passthrough?

Have been trying to get a 64-bit Win7 guest to access a usb thumbdrive (and eventually an Apple iTouch). Host is CentOS 6.2 and the guest is running under qemu-kvm with SELinux enabled and sVirt separating guests from each other and guests from the host. Do I need to install the virt-io drivers in the Win7 guest, or are there more permission and SELinux blocks in my path? Dave

CentOS6 virt-manager fails

I've been playing around with virt-manager. Set up a single vm and enabled autostart, then rebooted the host to test it. I have been investigating pci pass-through for virtualized guests and the documentation I have found seems to me to lack a certain consistency in its example. This may be due to my not understanding what it is trying to inform me. What I wish to do is to configure a pci multi-port serial i/o card for use by a single virtual host. I start by running lspci -v on the host to identify the serial card: 03:00.0 Serial controller: Oxford Semiconductor Ltd OX16PCI954 (Quad 16950 UART) function 0 (Uart) (prog-if 06 [16950]) Subsystem: Oxford Semiconductor Ltd Device 0000 Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 17 I/O ports at d040 [size=32] Memory at d0702000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4K] I/O ports at d020 [size=32] Memory at d0701000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4K] Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 2 Kernel driver in use: serial I then check for possible multiple IRQ assignment: lspci -v | grep ' IRQ 17' Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 17 I next use lspci -n to identify the vendor codes: lspci -n | grep '00:03.0' 00:03.0 0780: 8086:2e24 (rev 03) So this is an Intel chipset and the device id is 2e24. Now this is the point in the example where the documentation and I part company. In the examples I have found, although the pci device ids listed from virsh nodedev-list are uniformly of the form pci_0000_00_03_0 those used in the examples then switch and use the form pci_8086_3a6c for the subsequent steps. This pattern appears to be the prefix pci followed by the manufacturer's code followed by the device id. There is no other mapping to the pci device ids previously reported by virsh nodedev-list and lspci in the examples that I can discern. However, if I attempt to use the manufacturer and device ids in the next step of the example, substituting those used in the example with those reported on my own system, then I get a device not found reported: virsh nodedev-dumpxml pci_8086_2e24 error: Could not find matching device 'pci_8086_2e24' error: Node device not found If instead I use the pci device ids exactly as reported by virsh nodedev-list then I get what I expect: virsh nodedev-dumpxml pci_0000_00_03_0 <device> <name>pci_0000_00_03_0</name> <parent>computer</parent> <capability type='pci'> <domain>0</domain> <bus>0</bus> <slot>3</slot> <function>0</function> <product id='0x2e24'>4 Series Chipset HECI Controller</product> <vendor id='0x8086'>Intel Corporation</vendor> <capability type='virt_functions'> </capability> </capability> </device> My question is: Why does the documentation change the form of the pci identifiers used in the second half of the example from those reported previously in the same example? CentOS6 virtio?

Are there any updated instructions for installing Windows virtio drivers on a KVM Windows XP vm under CentOS6? The virtio .iso directory structure is slightly different from what is described in the RHEL6 virtualisation manual, and when I attempt to install e.g. the viostor driver, the device manager cannot find anything better than what is already installed. I tried each of the Wlh/Wnet/Wxp/XP directories.

Updated kvm kernael and now some guests are hung

Earlier this evening I updated our CentOS-6.2 kvm virtual host to kernel 2.6.32-220.4.1.el6. After rebooting three guests are hung. I cannot establish connections via the network (no route to host) and the virtual console is unresponsive. On two of them I was able to initiate the login process but after the password prompt the system no longer responded. On the other the system hung when I tried to run the vi editor. The console display on each of the affected guests shows a long list of hung tasks: task jbd2/dm-0-0:384 blocked for more than 120 seconds . . . task jbd2/dm-3-8:838 blocked for more than 120 seconfs task master:1226 blocked for more than . . . task miniserv.pl:1248 blocked task pickup:29136 blocked The lists on each guest vary somewhat but share most of the same processes being blocked. One has a postmaster task that does not display on any of the others. I can recover from this but I want to get these guests restarted if I possibly can. Is there a way to do this?
