hi Guys, As we get ready to start publishing Cloud Images ( or rather images consumable in various virt platforms, including public and private clouds ) - it would be great to have a baseline package manifest worked out. What / how many images should we build. At this time we were thinking of doing : - CentOS-5 32bit minimal - CentOS-6 32bit minimal - CentOS-5 64bit minimal - CentOS-6 64bit minimal - CentOS-5 64bit LAMP - CentOS-6 64bit LAMP What would be the minimal functional requirements people would expect from these images ? and what rpms should be installed ? Should root login be enabled or should we require people to go in via a 'centos' user. Netstat checks to see if the daemon is actually running. If it is not then netstat returns a non-zero exit code. If the ntpstat exit code is not zero then the service script is invoked to restart it. Additionally, netstat writes out to stderr that it could not find the daemon which gets emailed to support. I probably should have used [[ ! $? -eq 0 ]] but what I have written does work. We found ntpd just stoped on some guests upon occasion without any visible trace of a cause. Not frequently but when it did happen it was a nuisance to detect before clock drift on the guest caused some failure or other. This job detects these occurrences and self corrects. cloud-init in CentOS 6.3 images

Good evening, all. I just tried spinning up a CentOS instance in EC2 using ami-de5bd2ee from the AWS marketplace. I put a dummy script into the user-data field when launching the instance from the EC2 console but found it didn't work, even though the SSH key for the root user did. I pinged Karanbir on ##aws and he suggested I post here to get the conversation started. I'm currently looking into what it takes to roll my own AMI; I've already invested a fair bit of work into creating packages and Puppet config based on a CentOS 6.3 system (mainly with Vagrant), and my initial test with Amazon's Linux AMI wasn't promising. I think execution of the user-data script is a must-have, as it's the only way to automate the creation of a new instance without external tools. Thanks, Brian

domU doesn't see all memory

Hi, I'm running CentOS 6.2 x86_64 as xen guest on a CentOS 5.7 dom0. The host is running 2.6.18-274.7.1.el5xen, the guest 2.6.32-220.2.1.el6.x86_64. Memory for domU is set to 1024 MB and "xm list" shows these 1024 MB. But "free -m" on the guest system shows only 652 MB. When I set up a CentOS 5.x guest with 1024 MB "free -m" shoes 1024 MB. Anyone else seeing this? Any ideas on how to fix it? Cheers, Sebastian

Upgrading libvirt and qemu to latest version

Hi, I am considering upgrading the libvirt to v0.10.1 and qemu-kvm to v1.2 qemu version because they are recommended by Ceph. I am wondering does CentOS kernel support upstream qemu well? And are there rpms for theses version somewhere? or I have to build myself? Thanks. Peter

Hello, list. Yesterday I was pleased to see that Centos has released official images at the aws marketplace. Nice job. Today I started playing with the Centos 6.3 image ( https://aws.amazon.com/marketplace/pp/B00A6L6F9I, on which I plan to deploy a gluster cluster in production soon) and noticed a weird thing. EBS Volumes attached to sd<X> are translated to xvd<Y> at the OS level. However, after a few research and IRC chat, I figured out that it's not weird, it's actually a normal and expected behavior (thanks for your help, z00dax). sdX is actually mapped to xvdX+4. There is a consistent offset of 4. Suppose you attach an ebs volume to /dev/sdf. It'll be translated to xvdj at the OS level. sdg to xvdk, sdh to xvdl and so on. Allright. After having figured the mystery out, it became easy to work on automations that deal with ebs volumes and file systems, such as volumes created, attached and mounted on the fly, snapshots that freeze file systems and so on... However, I really do think to myself: Wouldn't it be cleaner if the image use simple translation (sdX to xvdX)? If I'm not wrong, Rightscale uses this on their Centos images and it's much simpler. There's no extra work needed to deal with that 4 offset when you want to automate things. Is there a reasonable reason for the 4 offset which makes it unchangeable? It's just a thought. Best practices on KVM systems

Hello, i'm trying to create some best practices on my centos 6.3 / libvirt /kvm hypervisors. Actually, i use NFS as shared storage backend for every VM and make reasonable use of the KSM (enabling it into qemu.conf). Every VM is configured with VirtIO drivers (when possible) and the disks use none as cacheing method to allow me live migration. I'll be happy to know if there are some more improvements i can implement. Please share your knowledge. Thanks in advance Luca Gervasi

Is there an easy way to mirror people.centos.org? I tried "rsync people.centos.org::" and it gives some disclaimers followed by a null list of available modules. I've got an ugly workaround using wget, but would prefer to use rsync. c -- Carl T. Miller Systems Engineer carl(a)carltm.com

CentOS AWS AMIs?

Hi list, I've noticed that instance-backed AMIs no longer seem to exist for the 'official' CentOS images, though the EBS ones are fine.. Looking at the wiki (http://wiki.centos.org/Cloud/AWS), the AMIs listed on marketplace are slightly newer than what's listed on the wiki, so just wondering if something got overlooked after the last build? Download official CentOS AMI?

I'd like to download the official CentOS AMI files for 6.3 x86_64, but that does not seem possible. The goal is to use the same image on both public and private clouds, to improve consistency. Are the AMI files available for download anywhere, or from anyone? I offer my apologies if the CentOS-virt list is not the correct contact for this query. -- Karl Ward

In the situation where a kvm guest pause and restore sequence leads to an excessive disconnect between guest time and wall time use ntpd -q to hard set the time. From the guest's point of view you are always going ahead in time in the case of a pause and resume so this is not likely to ever cause a problem. But, having written that down, it probably will at some point. 3. Run ntpd on the host system and have its guests configured to only use that time server source. 4. On each guest have a cron job that checks for ntpd at regular intervals which reports failures and restarts the time service as necessary.
