XSAs 170 and 154, repository layouts, and centos-release-xen 8-1

I have the following packages going through the CBS: * A CentOS 7 xen-4.6.1-2, with XSAs 170 and 154 * A CentOS 6 xen-4.6.1-2, with XSAs 170 and 154 * A CentOS 6 xen-4.4.3-11, with XSAs 170 All these should show up in mirrors hopefully sometime later today. As usual, please report any problems here. Xen 4.4 only has XSA 170 because at the time the embargo was lifted, I didn't have a suitable backport of XSA-154. It's only applicable when PCI-passthrough is in effect, so it's not that critical. Additionally, we've moved to the new repository layout. Repositories will now be tagged with the release; so C6 will have xen-44 and xen-46, and C7 will have xen-46. For now, the existing xen/ repository will be a symlink -- to xen-44 for C6 and to xen-46 for C7. There will be new centos-release-xen packages coming down the line. As described elsewhere: * centos-release-xen-44 will always point to the xen-44 repository * centos-release-xen-46 will always point to the xen-46 repository * centos-release-xen will (normally) point to whatever the most recent release is. For the time being, the C6 version of centos-release-xen will remain pointing to xen-44. These packages can be installed at the same time; yum will choose the most recent release of all available. = What you need to do (C6 users only) = * If you want to stay on xen-44: yum install centos-release-xen-44 yum remove centos-release-xen * If you want to update to xen-46 and stay there until you choose to update: yum install centos-release-xen-46 yum remove centos-release-xen * If you want to update to xen-46, and also get further updates automatically: yum install centos-release-xen-46 = What you need to do (C7 users) = Much less urgent, since we don't plan to upgrade until 4.8, but: * If you want to stay on 46 until you choose to update: yum install centos-release-xen-46 yum remove centos-release-xen * If you want to get further updates automatically: Do nothing, you're already set.

Hi, I've got an LXC container running. Essentially, only core, and openssh-server installed inside the container. Got a shell with lxc-attch -n "containername", but unable to run system-config-firewall. Any ideas, what might be wrong? KVM VGA passthru to a linux guest

I am trying to passthru an AMD HD6800 gpu to a fedora 23 kvm guest. I was able to do this for a windows 7 guest but the fedora guest just doesn't see the card any ideals? Thank you

Garbled screen after RAM Scrub on boot

Dear All I am using Centos 7 with Xen 4.6 on a Dell Poweredge T430 When the machine boots, after the 'Scrubbing Free RAM' message, I get a screen filled with little white squares until the login prompt, so I cannot see what is happening as the machine boots. Also there is nothing on the screen when I reboot. My /etc/default/grub is GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="$(sed 's, release .*$,,g' /etc/system-release)" GRUB_DEFAULT=saved GRUB_DISABLE_SUBMENU=true GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="crashkernel=auto rhgb intremap=no_x2apic_optout" GRUB_CMDLINE_XEN_DEFAULT="dom0_mem=13312M,max:14336M dom0_max_vcpus=6 dom0_vcpus_pin" GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768 GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_XEN_REPLACE_DEFAULT="console=hvc0 earlyprintk=xen nomodeset" I have tried setting (for a 1024x768 resolution) vga=792 in the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX and commenting out GRUB_GFXMODE and GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX, but this makes no difference What am I doing wrong? ssh access to vmware vm from outside

Hi, I have a centos 7 host server, which hosts vmware vms with various Os. I want to reach a ubuntu 14.04 vm through ssh and x2go (ssh as well). What I did. 1/ open a 2296 port in firewalld. 2/ add 2296=internalvmip:22 in tcp section of /etc/vmware/vmnet8/nat/nat.conf (vmnet8 being the vms network) >From the host server I can ssh the vm, but from outside, a ssh -p 2296 user@hostserverip gives me a connection refused. I tried a firewall-cmd --zone=external --add-forward-port=port=2296:proto=tcp:toport=22:toaddr=internalvmip but it does not change anything. What am I missing ?

Xen guests loose network

All, Just installed and got Xen working on CentOS 7 on my Dell Precision 470. I had been using Fedora 23 (with Xen) and saw what I'm now seeing with CentOS 7. For some odd reason the network just stops on the guests. I can "xl console vm" and start the network (ifup eth0 or service network restart) - but I can't figure out why it just stops. I'm not seeing anything odd in my /var/log/messages. Anything I can try or look at when this happens? Its happened to both a CentOS 7 guest and Fedora 23 guest... I did do an "ip addr" and sure enough there is no IP associated with eth0 until I bounce the network. I should probably do some more digging, but nothing obvious appears to be at issue. This is a home machine really, and its more annoying than pressing. Appreciate the help ahead of time! Scot P. Proposal: Version-specific centos-release-xen-NN packages

Thank you for those who raised the issue of upgrading across potentially disruptive major versions (like the Xen 4.4 -> 4.6 update), and for everyone who weighed in. After discussing options with users here on this list (as well as in the IRC channel), further discussing things in the Virt SIG IRC meeting, and also raising the issue with other SIGs on the centos-devel list, here are my thoughts. (Skip down to the "Proposal" sections for the TLDR version.) = The issue = To summarize the issue: * Some users want to get whatever the latest supported version of Xen automatically via yum, without having to do anything but a "yum update". They want "yum update" to give them a new major version when one is available. We can call this group "auto-upgrade", because they expect a major version upgrade to happen automatically. * Other users want "yum update" to have fairly strong guarantees not to break their systems -- and thus want "yum update" *not* to give them a new major version, but want to have to manually do something specific (such as installing a different package) to get the updated version. Or at very least, they expect not to get a new major version that is expected to break things. We can call this group "manual-upgrade", because they want to manually upgrade major versions. * At the moment, the Virt SIG is only committed to making security updates to one version of Xen at a time * The 4.4 -> 4.6 update may be particularly disruptive for some users, since xend/xm will no longer be available. * Many users may not follow this mailing list, so may not know about the impending update * There are new XSAs coming out in 2 days (17 February). There are basically two "problems" to solve. The first thing to look at is what we would like things to look long-term, given that some users want auto-upgrade and some users want manual-upgrade. The second thing to look at is what to do in the current situation, given that we have users from both camps with the same set of packages installed, who may not read this mailing list. A couple of goals (some of which are on conflict): * We'd like to support both types of users * We want to minimize breakage for people who do don't follow this list, and do "yum update" without noticing the major upgrade that gets pushed out. * We want to minimize the security exposure for people who don't follow this list, and who don't notice that there haven't been any updates in response to XSAs. Additionally, we'd like if possible to be able to make it possible for anyone who wants to maintain older versions of Xen to do so in parallel with the newer versions. = Proposal: Long term = Going forward, this is what I propose we aim for: * Have separate repos for each version of Xen; at the present, this means xen-44 and xen-46. * Have version-specific centos-release-xen-NN pakcages which will always point to that version of the repo. So centos-release-xen-44 will point to xen-44, centos-release-xen-46 will point to xen-46. Users in the "manual-upgrade" camp can install one of these versions, knowing that a simple "yum update" will never move them across versions. When they're ready to upgrade, they can just install the newer version; yum will choose the newest version from all the repos available to it. * Have a generic centos-release-xen package which will always point to the most recent 'released' Virt SIG version of Xen. Users in the "auto-upgrade" camp can install this version, knowing that they'll always get the version with the latest security fixes. This will also make it simple for community members to step up and support older versions if they desire. = Discussion: Short term = For those who do not follow the list, we have to essentially choose one update policy for them. Will the current users expecting "manual-upgrade" have "auto-upgrade" imposed on them (potentially breaking on update)? Or will the current users expecting "auto-upgrade" have "manual-upgrade" imposed on them (potentially missing important security updates)? For someone to be negatively affected by the "manual-upgrade" choice, they only have to be running Xen in any configuration. For someone to be negatively affected by the "auto-upgrade" choice, they have to * still be running xend (in spite of having a warning printed on every xm command invocation for the last 18 months) * update their systems without checking / noticing the new major version Even then, they should have the option of downgrading with "yum downgrade"; there should only be major carnage if they automatically update large numbers of servers at once. When I brought this question up with the other SIGs, the general sentiment was that, as community-run projects, we do not have nearly the testing effort required to make it possible for users to simply run "yum update" without checking first. So on the whole, I think the aggregate risk is minimized if we go with the "auto-upgrade" option for those who don't specifically make a choice. = Proposal: Short term = * I'll try to get the new xen-NN repos, along with centos-release-xen-NN packages up and working tomorrow (Tuesday) * Wednesday I'll push updates for the 4.6 packages to the xen-46 repos. * centos-release-xen will point to the xen-44 repos for two weeks. During that time, those who want the XSA updates will have to install centos-release-xen-46. Those who don't want to update to 4.6 should install the centos-release-xen-44 package *and remove* the centos-release-xen package. * After those two weeks, centos-release-xen will switch to the xen-46 repos, giving the XSA updates to everyone who hasn't yet updated. I know this doesn't make everyone happy, but I've tried to make the best of a tricky situation. Thank you all for the input you've given. -George

I've pushed an update to the centos-release-xen package, centos-release-xen-7-12.el6, to centos-virt-xen-testing, which should fix the "missing initrd" issue people have been seeing. I wrote about this a couple months back. George asked me to submit to the Xen developers list, but I never had the time due to work demands on getting the new server set up. In my case, I had to use a different server. The new motherboard/CPU had no issues with the second CPU. If you turn off and unplug the second CPU, it will work. Check the archives for my e-mail address and see George's replies. As mentioned yesterday, Xen 4.6 packages are now available for testing. These also include an update to libvirt 1.3.0, in line with what's available for CentOS 7. Please test, particularly the upgrade if you can, and report any problems here. Hi, I am trying to implement something like an "LXC on CentOS 7 HowTo" for internal use. (Might as well get public afterwards.) I am following the HowTo for CentOS 6 (https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/LXC-on-CentOS6). So, here's what I did so far (Steps 1-6 can easily be omitted, but I am trying to be complete.) 1.) Disable delta RPM's in /etc/yum.conf 2.) Remove LibreOffice sudo yum remove "libreoffice*" 3.) System update sudo yum -y update 4.) Install some niceties sudo yum -y install emacs emacs-nox "@Development Tools" git subversion 5.) Reboot 6.) Install VirtualBox Guest Additions 7.) Mouse and display issues with Windows 10 guest

Anyone managed to get a Windows 10 guest running well under qemu/kvm? I can get it up and running, but there is a major issue with losing use of the mouse, plus my display resolution is stuck at 1024x768. The mouse will work for a short time (a few seconds to a few minutes), but then stops responding. That's with the mouse coming in as the recommended QEMU tablet device. I can assign a USB mouse to the guest as a USB host device, but it also stops responding after a short time. At least with the USB mouse I can remove it from the guest and then reassign it again. That gives me use of the mouse, but again only for a short time. Trying run Windows 10 from just a keyboard is an exercise in frustration. I can't get Windows 10 to believe that any screen resolution besides 1024x768 is available. That's the case both with VNC/vga and Spice/qxl. This is in contrast with Windows 7, which offers a good selection of resolutions with VNC/vga. virtio not installing correctly

I have converted a physical machine to kvm, following instructions on the proxmox wiki. So far so good. Now I'm attempting to convert the vm from ide to virtio following the instructions here, http://www.linux-kvm.org/page/Boot_from_virtio_block_device, with virtio-win-stable from Fedora. The guest is running Windows XP. When the new hardware wizard popped up finding the RedHat VirtIO SCSI controller, I pointed it to the viostor/xp directory on the iso. It appears as if all files have been copied, viostor.sys to C:\Windows\system32\DRIVERS, the green progress bar goes all the way to the right, but it's been sitting there over night with no further progress. There is a vioscsi directory on the iso, but it contains no drivers for XP. >From a previous attempt, I know that if I reboot the vm now and try to enter safe mode, it will hang after loading the agp driver. Host OS is CentOS 6.7.

When will CentOS 7.1 become available as an AWS AMI?

I am in need of some AWS instances of this version. There are "community" instances of 7.1 but I would strongly prefer an official release from CentOS team over trusting my base image to an unknown publisher. Is there any plan/projection of when CentOS will publish 7.1 to the AWS marketplace?

How to build CentOS 7 AMI

I'd like to revisit the thread about how the CentOS 7 AMIs are created ( https://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos-devel/2015-July/013652.html) and see if the process can be published in the https://github.com/CentOS/sig-cloud-instance-build repository or another relevant location. With CentOS 7 AMIs only being available in the Marketplace, all resulting EC2 instances have the Marketplace codes attached to the EBS volumes. A significant restriction of this is that a resulting image cannot be the non-primary volume of an instance unless it is powered down. This presents itself to be a problem in at least the following scenarios: - Unable to attach a CentOS 7 boot volume to another instance for repair without either creating a temporary instance or shutting down an existing one. For example, if you messed up the /etc/sudoers file and logged out, and wanted to repair, you would not be able to repair by mounting to another instance and editing the file without incurring additional (albeit small) cost, or having an existing instance be temporarily unavailable. - The "amazon-chroot" Packer Builder ( https://www.packer.io/docs/builders/amazon-chroot.html) does not work because it starts by mounting a copy of the snapshot tied to the AMI as part of a scripted operation and therefore cannot power off to do so Custom AMIs, snapshots, copied EBS volumes, etc, all have the marketplace codes copied to them and inherit the restrictions. If an org was to use these features for automating environments and was disconnected from the original Marketplace agreement, they may be unaware of this limitation. I would also appreciate being able to have the additional transparency of seeing how an AWS AMI is created as the docker/openstack/etc images from the repository referenced above. This would be useful in environments with regulatory compliance concerns, such as AWS GovCloud, HIPAA, FedRAMP, etc. I understand the benefit that Marketplace registrations allow for the ability to notify users of any changes, and I am not necessarily advocating for switching away from the Marketplace as the primary AMI location. I would like to be provided the opportunity to build a private AMI in the exact same procedure as the official image so as to avert the restrictions provided by the Marketplace. Thank you, Alan
