Is kvm-clock dependant on hardware of Physical Server?

I've got a three Centos 5.5 KVM severs, but only one of them is presenting guests with the kvm-clock source. The two servers I'm not seeing kvm-clock on have Athlon x2 64bit processors. The other server with kvm-clock has a Phenom II X6 1090T Processor. I've checked the system configuration and all the boxes have the same set of RPM packages. To confirm that the issue was physical hardware specific I migrated a VM from the Athlon to the Phenom server and the kvm-clock source appeared. Any ideas why I'm not seeing kvm-clock with my Athlon X2 processors, or is there another difference I haven't caught? Steve

Conversion steps from Vmware server 2 to Centos KVM 5.5

So I have finally carved out some time and need to start converting my vm's from Vmware server to KVM and I was wondering if anyone had the specfic steps that need to be taken...I understand how to convert the disks etc..what I am interested in is how to get them to use virtio ones which means iw ill need to remake initrd...so if anyone has moved from vmware server (aka the free one) to KVM and using the virtio drivers...if you have the complete steps that would be great...Thanks...**

Xen on Centos 5.5 vs 5.3 and stability issues

I've recently upgraded a Centos 5.3 machine to Centos 5.5. The hardware isn't HVM capabile so I'm only running para-virt guests. Using a vanilla i386 kernel boots without, but the newer kernel-xen locks up the Dom0 after a couple of minute. I'm only booting into single user mode for these tests so no VMs are active. *kernel-xen-2.6.18-128.1.10.el5 - no issues *kernel-xen-2.6.18-194.17.4.el5 - lock up *kernel-2.6.18-194.17.4.el5 - no issues For the moment I've switched back to the older Xen kernel, athough I'm still running the newer Xen Hypervisor. My current Xen packages are *xen-3.0.3-105.el5_5.5 *kernel-xen-2.6.18-194.17.4.el5 *kernel-xen-2.6.18-128.1.10.el5 *kmod-xfs-xen-0.4-2 *xen-libs-3.0.3-105.el5_5.5 *kernel-xen-devel-2.6.18-194.17.4.el5 *kernel-xen-devel-2.6.18-128.1.10.el5 *xen-devel-3.0.3-105.el5_5.5 Prior to the upgrade I had the following installed under Centos 5.3 *kernel-xen-devel-2.6.18-128.1.6.el5 *kernel-xen-2.6.18-128.1.10.el5 *xen-libs-3.0.3-80.el5_3.2 *xen-devel-3.0.3-80.el5_3.2 *kmod-xfs-xen-0.4-2 *kernel-xen-2.6.18-128.1.6.el5 *kernel-xen-devel-2.6.18-128.1.10.el5 *xen-3.0.3-80.el5_3.2 Booting Dom0 with kernel-xen-2.6.18-128.1.10.el5 everything appears to work normally and all of my Guests are up and running. If I boot with kernel-xen-2.6.18-194.17.4.el5 the boot normally gets to around udev and the system locks up. On a couple of occasions it did mange to boot but reported some files were corrupted. I'm worried that there is an issue running this kernel where the root file system is LVM on top of Raid 1. Anyone on this list have tips on diagnosing the issue, or come across a similar problem themselves. Steve

Best way to give guest promiscuous interface?

I am using CentOS 5.5 with KVM as a host and have a need for one guest to be able to have promiscuous read access to one port on the physical host (which is an HP BL460 G6 blade server with Intel 2 port 1Gb ethernet mezzanine card.) I initially tried to use PCI passthrough, but I was unable to get it to work. I set everything up as documented in RHEL documentation (http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/5/html/Virtualiz…, but I got the following error message: # virsh start c7e1b6_g1 error: Failed to start domain c7e1b6_g1 error: this function is not supported by the hypervisor: Device 0000:0b:00.0 is behind a switch lacking ACS and cannot be assigned Does anyone have PCI passthrough working on a BL460 G6 with CentOS 5.5? I then tried to connect the guest to a bridge. This worked once I did a "brctl setageingtime 0" on the bridge. However, I don't know the best way to make this change persistent. Any suggestions? Is there a better way to do this? Thanks for any input, David

VMWare 4.1 and CentOS

problem: kvm host locks up for some seconds

Hi All, I'm running: kvm-qemu-img-83-164.el5 kvm-83-164.el5 kernel-2.6.18-194.8.1.el5 libvirt-python-0.6.3-33.el5 virt-viewer-0.0.2-3.el5 kernel-2.6.18-194.el5 etherboot-zroms-kvm-5.4.4-13.el5.centos kmod-kvm-83-164.el5 kernel-devel-2.6.18-194.8.1.el5.centos.plus libvirt-0.6.3-33.el5 python-virtinst-0.400.3-9.el5 kvm-tools-83-164.el5 virt-manager-0.6.1-12.el5 on HP ProLiant DL380 G6. Basically it works ok, quite stably running 10 VMs .. the only problem I've got is the following: Sometime initiating 'shutdown' from guest OS (linux only), kvm host locks up for several seconds (15-30) and also all of the VMs hosted on this host become inaccessible as well. In 100% cases if I do 'Force shutdown' (from Virtual Machine Manager) of a VM, consequent VMs re-start results in kvm host locking up for some seconds as well .. Does anybody experience something similar ? I've tested Ubuntu Server 10.04.1 LTS on the same hardware with 'latest/greatest' kernel | kvm and it doesn't have this problem. Regards, Vladimir
