new to xen - got questions, please

I just installed Centos 5.5 with the xen kernel on an older machine. It has Xeon processors and a 700 Mhz processor speed, so I realize I must use para-virtualized guests. Reading the Centos/RH Virtualization Guide gives examples of the process of installing guest hosts, but it only lists installing Windows as a fully-virtualized host. Is that because they only showed those types of examples or is it that Windows hosts can't be para-virtualized? Secondly, what's the normal what to install a Centos guest when it comes to defining the installation media (it lists HTTP, FTP, or NFS). This machine only has a CD drive, so I'm a little confused about the best way to handle this since the Centos installation now consists of 6 CDs. A brief explanation would be handy. Ø Do you have the latest BIOS/firmware versions installed? Ø Also you could try installing without selecting the "Virtualization" option during centos installation.. does it boot then (on baremetal without Xen) ? Ø -- Pasi Yes, I have the latest firmeware, and yes, if “Virualization” is OFF (in the BIOS), XEN works fine – but I cannot install new VMs. MtK

Move Xen Image to Another Server

Dear, I want to move xen image (Dom-U) to another Server (both Servers use CentOS 5.5). Can I just copy the file to new server then create new Dom-U and pointed to the image file? Any information of link/doc/manual is appreciated. Thanks.

How to reinstall/repair Uninstalled Kernel-Xen?

Dear, I try to reinstall kernel-xen by doing: # yum erase kernel-xen But, after reboot CentOS can't start because lost kernel-xen Please advise how to repair and install kernel-xen again. Thanks.

is the xenconsoled crash solved?

One of our machines are being bitten by that bug, once every 2-4 weeks or so xenconsoled dies and all the VMs stop responding intil xenconsoled is restarted. I googled for it and I saw many people reporting it but no solution for it. Does anyone know if it is solved in 5.5? I can't upgrade the box (it's a production box) unless I can prove the problem will go away. thanks in advance

Is kvm ready for prime time?

Hi all, I've started playing with kvm on CentOS 5.5, with not much success so far. In a nutshell, I have the same problem as http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos-virt/2010-April/001854.html I followed the RHEL5 virtualization guide to set up a bridge interface br0, and then used virt-install (rather than virt-manager - I like automation) to set up the vm. It hangs at some point. The command line is slightly modified from the one I was using with xen. Running it with -d shows that the correct hypervisor is used and the network install source is found. Hello, I've installed XEN according to this tutorial: <http://www.howtoforge.com/paravirtualization-with-xen-on-centos-5.4-x86_64> http://www.howtoforge.com/paravirtualization-with-xen-on-centos-5.4-x86_64 on the first XEN boot, it freezes for a very long time on: allocating pci resources starting at a8000000 (gap: a0000000:5ec00000) (the centos installation works fine) I then realized that this is caused when I set the BIOS to use Virtualization. Xen 3.1.2 on CentOS 5.5 doesn't see all 4 CPUs

Hello all, I've been digging around on this for a few days and I have not come up with a solution. I have a Compaq ProLiant DL580 (G1, the old tan Compaq) with 4 x 700MHz P-III CPUs and 11GB of memory. I've loaded CentOS 5.5 with Virtualization (Xen) + KVM and patched up to current (full KS packages file list at the end). When it boots, Xen only detects a single CPU as shown in the xm dmesg output (full output and the end): (XEN) Detected 701.650 MHz processor. (XEN) I/O virtualisation disabled (XEN) CPU0: Intel Pentium III (Cascades) stepping 04 (XEN) Platform timer overflows in 2 jiffies. (XEN) Platform timer is 1.193MHz PIT (XEN) Brought up 1 CPUs [...] (XEN) Dom0 has maximum 1 VCPUs The system shows all 4 CPUs when booted outside of Xen. Any ideas on Xen options or anything I can try to see if I can get all 4 CPUs? 4 CPU with WinXP on Centos 5.5 KVM?

Has anyone had any success getting WinXP 32bit to use 4 CPU's under Centos 5.5 KVM? I have tried everything and the best I can get is 2 CPU's. I tried everything listed here http://www.linux-kvm.com/content/running-windows-smp-guests I am using the VIRTIO drivers. Is this known limitation of KVM-83-164 (Centos5 release) with WinXP 32bit? I think there are reports of it working with 32bit Windows 2003 (or was it Windows 2008?). I know KVM is granting the 4 CPU's since Linux VM can use 4 CPU's on the same computer. Libvirt NAT-based network 2x-4x faster than Libvirt routed network?

Hi Is it expected behaviour that a libvirt NAT-based network is faster than a libvirt routed network? I would guess that the routed network would be the fastest one in all cases, but I'm seeing the opposite in my setup. On a 100mbit internet connection, the routed network tops at 4mbyte/sec, while the nat-based network goes all the way to 10mbyte/sec. I've spend the last 6 hours on trying to figure out the cause of this, changing settings, reinstalling the system, but the problem persists and I can't find the cause of it. It is a clean and fairly simple setup: - Clean installation of CentOS 5.5 - Installation of kvm+libvirt+virt-manager+xorg - iptables service disabled - 1 public IP for the host (xxx.yyy.zzz.215) on a /32 subnet with xxx.yyy.zzz.193 as gateway - 3 public IP for the routed network (xxx.yyy.zzz.251-253) on a /26 subnet with the same gateway as the host - 1 virtual machine with either the NAT or the routed libvirt network assigned I have no networking connection errors or similar, it works perfectly with both the NAT and the routed network, but the routed network is just 2-4 times slower than the NAT one. Do you have any suggestions of what the problem might be? When I look at the iptables rules generated by libvirt, and the routing table, everything looks fine AFAICT. Traceroute from guest doesn't reveal anything either. Ping times from the two networks are similar, so the main issue seems to be throughput.
