Proxmox VE 1.0 released today

Greetings, Since everyone on this list is interested in Linux and virtualization... I just wanted to mention that the Proxmox VE folks just released Proxmox VE 1.0 today. Proxmox VE site: http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Main_Page Proxmox VE 1.0 Announcement: http://www.proxmox.com/forum/showthread.php?t=750 I've mentioned it on this list before wondering if anyone was interested in borrowing some of the software from their project (since it is GPLed) and applying it to CentOS. What is Proxmox VE? It is a "bare-metal" Linux distribution based on Debian 4.0r5 that includes a 2.6.24-based kernel that includes support for both KVM (Machine / Hardware Virtualization) and OpenVZ (OS Virtualization). Proxmox VE includes a really nice, web-based management system that allows for: 1) KVM virtual machine or OpenVZ container creation 2) Live and offline VM / Container migration from one physical host to another, shared storage solution not required 3) VM Image / OS Template management 4) VM / Container monitoring Possibilities for CentOS: a) Create "bare-metal" install media for a system based on CentOS b) Separate out the web-management application into separate software packages that could be installed on existing CentOS systems c) Separate KVM and OpenVZ so you could run an only-KVM server or an only-OpenVZ server. This would be very handy on hardware that does not support VT in the CPU. If virtualization interests you, give Proxmox VE a try and see what you think. Feel free to email me directly with comments. bonding over bridge or bridge over bonding ?

Hi, I'm trying to configure a network bridge over a bonding without any success. Here is my configuration: ifcfg-eth0: DEVICE=eth0 HWADDR=00:1E:C9:E8:3F:E5 ONBOOT=yes USERCTL=no MASTER=bond0 SLAVE=yes ifcfg-eth1: DEVICE=eth1 HWADDR=00:1E:C9:E8:3F:E7 ONBOOT=yes USERCTL=no MASTER=bond0 SLAVE=yes ifcfg-bond0: DEVICE=bond0 ONBOOT=yes BRIDGE=br0 USERCTL=no ifcfg-bridge0: DEVICE=br0 TYPE=Bridge BOOTPROTO=static IPADDR=192.168.52.55 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 NETWORK=192.168.52.0 BROADCAST=192.168.52.255 ONBOOT=yes DELAY=0 eth0 and eth1 don't goes up... Am I doing something wrong ? Shouldn't I trying to do a bonding over 2 bridges ? Do anybody already tried such a configuration with success ? Greetings, It's me again to mention OpenVZ. I maintain some CentOS OS Templates for OpenVZ and update them on about a monthly basis. I usually don't have trouble having an OS Template out for a new release on the day of the release (example CentOS 4.7 and 5.2). You can find them here: http://download.openvz.org/template/precreated/contrib/ You can actually find a number of OS Templates for CentOS on the openvz.org website but I believe mine (as you can see in the "contrib" directory) are the only ones that are refreshed periodically. As I write this, the current ones are: centos-4-i386-default-4.7-20081013.tar.gz 13-Oct-2008 22:40 108M centos-4-x86_64-default-4.7-20081013.tar.gz 13-Oct-2008 22:43 115M centos-5-i386-default-5.2-20081013.tar.gz 13-Oct-2008 22:47 117M centos-5-x86_64-default-5.2-20081013.tar.gz 13-Oct-2008 22:50 124M Those OS Templates probably have a little more software in them than some of the smaller ones (I like having links, mc, nano, and screen) and yes yum is installed. While I don't have experience with any, it is my understanding that some/many commercial hosting providers that offer "VPS" accounts that are OpenVZ (or Parallels Virtuzzo Containers) based often have somewhat dated, minimalistic setups... often without yum even installed... which can be very problematic. I know the IRC #centos channel on freenode really doesn't like to get questions from cut rate account VPS users running CentOS containers, especially if they are missing some somewhat common packages and don't have an easy way to install them (no yum). Speaking of OpenVZ OS Templates but getting a little off topic with non-CentOS info, an OpenVZ community member (Robert Nelson) has been working on a new OS Template build system he calls "vzpkg2" and "pkg-cacher" (a modified version of Debian's apt-cacher) that makes it easy to build OS Templates for Fedora, CentOS, Debian and Ubuntu... 44 different combinations when you consider the various distro release versions and both the i386 and x86_64 arches. While vzpkg2 is still hasn't been added as a stock OpenVZ package, I've been testing it and it works great. It is easy to build YOUR OWN OS Templates from scratch and in a network efficient way (with the help of pkg-cacher). I was able to build all 44 OS Templates in just a couple of hours with a broadband connection. What's an OS Template? Basically it is install media for a Linux distribution from which you can make a container in about a minute. Tru has already been building vmware images ( http://people.centos.org/tru/vmware/ ) for various roles. I was wondering if there was any interest in prebuilt Xen images as well ? init 6 works inconsistently in XEN

I am using Centos 5.2 as both my XEN host and guests. Both the XEN host and each XEN guest are up-to-date with the latest CentOS 5.2 updates. I've noticed over time that sometimes using init 6 (or init 0) in the guest works flawlessly and other times the guest will reach "Restarting System"/"System Halted" and hang. When this hang occurs the only way to finish the shutdown/reboot is to destroy the virtual machine and also one of the CPUs on the XEN host is maxed out at 100% CPU. Trying to diagnose this hang, I have found that restarting the xend and xendomains daemons restores the ability to init 6/init 0 the guests. I have not as yet narrowed the problem further. I was wondering if anyone else has seen this behavior and if so if there is a known fix, if not, how to properly report this issue so it can eventually be addressed? Brett

Running Xen domU hangs until service xend is restarted

xen-3.0.3-64.el5_2.1 Here's the scenario: Name ID Uptime Domain-0 0 128 days, 17:31:11 piranga_xen01 1 128 days, 17:30:13 piranga_xen02 39 96 days, 15:47:10 piranga_xen03 35 96 days, 16:39:52 piranga_xen04 59 16 days, 17:30:35 3 hours ago, xen04 stopped responding. xm list showed it was constantly in State "r" and Time steadily increasing for xen04 while all other domU's kept going unharmed: Name ID Mem(MiB) VCPUs State Time(s) Domain-0 0 5052 4 r----- 296971.7 piranga_xen01 1 263 1 -b---- 1588245.8 piranga_xen02 39 255 1 -b---- 26560.5 piranga_xen03 35 255 1 -b---- 17036.2 piranga_xen04 59 511 1 r----- 15560.6 xenconsoled wasn't showing up in dom0 processlist. After service xend restart the xen04 domU went back to normal again. I've seen previous posts about (and experienced myself) the case where xm list, xm create, xm restart stops working because of a botched xend/xenconsoled, but this is the first time a domU just hangs for me. Anyone else experienced this? -- Mike

domU Windows XP tcpip.sys bluescreen

I am currently running Centos 5.2 with 2.6.18-92.1.13.el5xen with 2 domu's One another Centos 5.2 and another Windows XP. The Centos DomU works fine and I never have any problems however my XP DomU crashes every so often with the bluescreen DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL then under the technical information tcpip.sys addres xxxxxx base at xxxxx datetime Xxxxxxxxx Is there a driver pack for XP that provides better integration into XEN or something? Or am I missing anything ? The XP domU is just Windows XP fully patched to the most update patches no external drivers added. Thanks

XEN: pc reboots when tries to start up X while running the xen kernel

Hi All, Has anyone had this issue. I performed a basic install of centos 5.2 then install kernel-xen xen virt-manager. When I reboot the pc to us the xen kernal as soon as it tries to start X the pc reboots. I then disable X on start by editing teh /etc/inittab file. No it boot in runlevel 3 but when I start up X from the command line it does the same the pc reboots. I am running a an Intel Johannesburg Executive series motherboard with onboard graphics and an Intel E8400 processor which supputs VT tech and is recommended by Red Hat linux. Does anyone why it would just reboot when starting X. Please advise. thx.

Unstable VMware 1.0.5 host after 4.7 upgrade

After upgrading to 4.7 x86_64 on all our boxes (from 4.6), we have 3 VMware Server 1.0.5 hosts that are unstable. Sometimes they spontaneously reboot, other times they freeze and require a hard reset. Under 4.6, they were rock solid. Failures tend to be associated with a guest start-up event, but are often at random times as well. There is no useful evidence in either the vmware or messages log files on the host. The other thing that changed when we upgraded is that we upgraded our CentOS 4.6 (x86) guests to 4.7 and instead of recompiling a new kernel with HZ=100, we tested and implemented the newly available divider=10 kernel parameter. Initially, everything was fine with the divider option, but now I'm not so sure. Probably not a coincidence is the fact that the 3 hosts that are affected do NOT have VT capable processors. Our quad-core Xeon boxes with VT have not been a problem. I'm in the process of going back to an HZ=100 kernel. Of course, my first guest system reboot with the new kernel triggered a host reboot. Arrrggghhh. Does anyone have similar experiences? Does anyone have a *stable* VMware Server 1.0.x host on 2.6.9-78.0.1 with non-VT processors? Is anyone else using divider=10 with VMware 1.0.x? -- Jeff

io writes very slow when using vmware server

We are struggling with a strange problem. When we have some VMWare clients running (mostly MS windows clients), than the IO-write performance on the host becomes very bad. The guest os's do not do anything, just having them started, sitting at the login prompt, is enough to trigger the problem. The host has plenty of 4G of RAM, and all clients fit easily into the space. The disksystem is a RAID5 (ok, not the fastest choice). Both hosts are running the latest CentOS 5.2 (but the problem was already present in 5.0 as well), and running the latest production version of VMWare server 1.0.7 (but when running 1.0.5 the problem was there too). One host as an adaptec 2820 with 4 SATA drives, and uses the aacraid driver. Another host is a proliant with a smart array E200, battery backed cache of 128 MB using the cciss driver. Filesystem is ext3 on both hosts. When measuring the write performance, I try to avoid measuring the use the buffer cache like this, writing a 4.2gb file: $ sync; time sh -c 'dd if=/dev/zero of=large bs=8k count=500k; sync' (Ignore the times that dd reports because those are including the buffer cache; divide 4.2gb by the number of seconds reported by "time".) To verify, I also open a another terminal and run there: $ iostat -kx /dev/sda 5 1000 On my own workstation with a single sata drive, I get about 54 MB/s. On the hosts having the RAID5 disks, and without any vmware client running, I get about 20MB/s. As said, not really fast, but it should be good enough for our purpose. However when I start one vmclient and repeat the test, the write speed drops to half to about 10MB/s. With 2 clients the write speed drops even more to about 5 MB/s. With 3 clients only 2 MB/s, and with 4 MB/s I get only 0.5-1 MB/s write speed. The iostat shows the disk is 100% utilized, and the processor is spending most of it's time (99-100%!) in iowait.
