Hope this is helpful for people who want to package Xen for the upcoming CentOS 7. Basically it's not too much hassle to build Xen on RHEL 7. I'm in no way a packaging expert on RPM-based systems so I just list what's needed. The Yum repo I'm using is the public beta mirror at https://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/publiclist/RHEL/7/x86_64/. I cloned Xen tree from git://xenbits.xen.org/xen.git and used master branch. Dependences and requirements are listed by components. # To make top level ./configure pass: yum install -y gcc python-devel acpica-tools libuuid-devel ncurses-devel glib2-devel libaio-devel yajl-devel zlib-devel I also need to install dev86. I downloaded the latest version from http://www.debath.co.uk/dev86/ and installed it by hand. I noticed there's a dev86 package in Xen4Centos repo. We should be able to reuse that. And we also need to do ln -s /lib64/libcrypto.so.1.0.1e /lib64/libcrypto.so otherwise configure complains it cannot find libcrypto while that library is actually there. There's no markdown library in existing yum repo so some documents won't be built but that's not critical. And optionally if you want to use oxenstored: yum install -y ocaml # To build tools: ## To build hvmloader: yum install -y glibc-devel.i686 ## To build qemu-xen-traditional yum install -y SDL-devel ## To build qemu-xen-upstream yum install -y pixman-devel # To build stubdom yum install -y texinfo By now you should be able to just run "./configure; make dist" in top level Xen source code directory without getting any error (hopefully). There's warnings though because gcc 4.8 has stricter check than previous versions. I didn't build blktap, as RHEL 7 uses 3.10 kernel and Xen now has upstream QEMU, which should be able to cover all use cases. However default kernel only has frontend supports enabled (built as module), so we might need to alter its config or supply alternative Dom0 kernel. Have fun and Merry Christmas. Wei.

Is Process for Building the Official Centos 6 AMIs Public?

Hello! I'm new to the list and have been reading through the archives in regards to the official Centos AMIs in the AWS Marketplace. From what I've gathered, a direct image download of the official Centos AMIs isn't currently available. But i was wondering if the process for building/configuring the official Centos AMIs was public ... i.e. "here's a code repository with some kickstart, config files and bash scripts" I'm sure it's more complicated than that but I have a limited imagination :-) I was hoping I could effectively recreate the image on our private cloud by reviewing the scripts/config for the official Centos AMI install and creating a process that worked there for us. With the goal being that the two images be as close as possible. Thanks! Harlan

hi who wants to have a stab at the rhel7beta1 kernel ( 3.10 based ) to see what is needed to enable dom0 support ? Patch for domU packet loss

Hi, I've found that dom0 <-> domU begin loss ~ 20% packets on high UDP traffic (with bridged virtual network setup). The fix is to increase txqueuelen on vif* interfaces which is very low (32) by default. Tested with Centos 6.5, 3.10.23-11.el6.centos.alt.x86_64 xen-4.2.3-26.el6.centos.alt P.S. What do you use to provision domU's?

The subject says it all. I got CentOS 6.4 installed and then converted it to boot into the Xen kernel, using the C6.4 system as its dom0. But now I'm uncertain how to put a C6.4 domU on the result. Which tools are recommended?

Which tools are recommended? You can use virt-manager either from the Dom0 server (if it has all the GUI stuff and virt-manger installed) ... OR ... by connecting to the Dom0 using virt-manager from a Linux workstation. Official AWS Centos AMI and new instance types

Hello, list. Yesterday I tried changing the instance type of my c1.medium instances on AWS to c3.large and I wasn't able to do so. It looks like the official Centos AMI on market place is still not ready for c3.large. This is the error message I received: "The instance configuration for this AWS Marketplace product is not supported. Please see http://aws.amazon.com/marketplace/pp?sku=7w73f3vx0zywcfq1izrshkpjl for more information about supported instance types, regions, and operating systems." c3.large provides a huge balance improvement when it comes to cost X benefits. This instance has almost the same price of the old c1.medium ($ 0.150 vs $ 0.145 / hourly) and has more CPU power and double memory (7 ECUs and 3.7G). Given that fact, I believe we'll have lots of people switching from c1.medium to c3.large soon and therefore it'd be wise to have the official AMI ready. Besides c3.large, Amazon has released several new instance types and according to their market place info, I believe that the official AMI is not ready for those as well. Is it possible to get it ready? Thank you.

Hi, After following the instructions here http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Xen/Xen4QuickStart and installing the kernel from Xen4 CentOS project (kernel-3.4.61-9.el6.centos.alt.x86_64) I can't use any networking because the firmware for my NIC is not available: Bringing up interface eth0.3: bnx2x 0000:02:00.0: firmware: requesting bnx2x/bnx2x-e1h-7.2.51.0.fw bnx2x: [bnx2x_init_firmware:11696(eth0)]Can't load firmware file bnx2x/bnx2x-e1h-7.2.51.0.fw bnx2x: [bnx2x_func_hw_init:5476(eth0)]Error loading firmware bnx2x: [bnx2x_nic_load:2118(eth0)]HW init failed, aborting This seems similar to http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=6513 . Hot adding USB devices to guests at a fixed address

I have a device I want a guest to see. I've configured the following: % cat /etc/libvirt/HotPlug/owon.xml <hostdev mode='subsystem' type='usb'> <source> <vendor id='0x5345'/> <product id='0x1234'/> </source> </hostdev> And then in udev: % cat /etc/udev/rules.d/90-owon.rules ACTION=="add", \ SUBSYSTEM=="usb", \ SYSFS{idVendor}=="5345", \ SYSFS{idProduct}=="1234", \ RUN+="/usr/bin/virsh attach-device XP_VM1 /etc/libvirt/HotPlug/owon.xml" ACTION=="remove", \ SUBSYSTEM=="usb", \ SYSFS{idVendor}=="5345", \ SYSFS{idProduct}=="1234", \ RUN+="/usr/bin/virsh detach-device XP_VM1 /etc/libvirt/HotPlug/owon.xml" Now this works; I plug the device in and the guest sees it. The problem is that, each time, it shows up at a different address on the guest's USB bus. And, Windows XP being Windows, this means it asks to load a device driver each and every time (I've never understood why Windows wants to load a new device driver just because you plug a device into a different port). Does anyone know of a way of adding a device so that it's at a known fixed address inside the guest? -- rgds Stephen

Cannot start CentOS after installing the latest Xen4 with kernel 3.10.20

Hello. I'm installing the latest version of XEN to CentOS 6.4 machine. XEN version: 4.2.3-25.el6.centos.alt kernel: 3.10.20-11.el6.centos.alt When I reboot, many messages appears on the screen, indication the loading of XEN and then.. just a black screen. Several days ago I successfully installed XEN on another machine, but that was XEN 4.2.3-23 and kernel 3.4.68-9. And now, after the new version is released, it stopped working.. Also if I try to load a new kernel without XEN - it works perfectly. Please help me find out what's wrong with the new XEN kernel and how to fix it. Thanks.
