Hi, I'm running CentOS 5.5 (on ThinkPad x61). I use KVM to run a SLES 11.0 (32bits, kernel 2.6.27.19-5-pae) guest. Lockup with (none) login

I had a CentOS 5.5 Xen "standard virtualization" install lockup on reboot after an battery backup (apcusbd) orderly shutdown induced by a power outage. It may have been sitting with two kernel updates without a reboot. I have to head to the site (with a fractured ankle), but reports indicate that it is at - (none) login: which only returns back to itself after a user login at console, including root. - the local user says, though the monitor speed was "too fast" that it is failing to find its mounts OR that the disk reported errors. It is on a dmraid (I know, please don't flame me). There is some critical information on the drives that did NOT backup. I need a list of tools and ideas to have a checklist to try and resurrect this machine. Of course I will go with - Live CD - CentOS 5.5 install. - Hard drives. I would appreciate any procedural methods to go about this and try to resurrect this machine.

+1 for dd + nc over ssh if necessary. This process can and probably will saturate your ethernet interface, so depending upon the amount of traffic the box pushes on the public interface the size of the partition and other factors, sometimes i add a crossover cable between unused interfaces on the 2 boxes and run the process over that interface, so it doesn't impact the running vms. accesing remote domU vnc console?

I'm having an strange weird problem while trying to connect to a remote domU console The VM runs win2k3, I need to connect on the console in order to change its IP address I log into dom0, find the domU ID: [root@btreptab01 xen]# virsh list Id Name State ---------------------------------- 0 Domain-0 running 8 linux idle 9 win2k3 running so I open a new session and tunnel vnc through it: ssh -L 5907:localhost:5907 root@remoteip then launch a vnc client krdc localhost:7 and nothing happens :/ netstat shows the connection as established on both hosts, but I can't get a console working, just a blank screen I tried enabling vncserver on dom0, connecting to it, launching virt-manager and trying to attach to it, same result. It shows a "connecting to console" message and nothing more.... the dom0 host is in a datacenter many miles away from here, so walking to it and working on the server's console is not a practical option any ideas/help would be greatly apreciated

iptables and kvm

I am experimenting with a kvm virtual machine. At the moment I trying to configure iptables for the the host instance. In Xen terms I would call this Dom0 but I do not know the appropriate KVM term, if any. The setup I have is a single NIC (eth0) host bridged (bridge0). I want iptables to allow all host generated traffic (! bridge0 I think) and to check all other traffic for brute force attempts coming in over the LAN. I have the following rules in /etc/sysconfig/iptables: . . . -A GENERAL -m comment ! -i bridge0 -j ACCEPT . . . -A GENERAL -m comment -m state -i bridge0 --state NEW -j KNOCKD -A GENERAL -p tcp -m comment -m tcp -m multiport -m state -m recent -i bridge0 --state NEW --dports 20,21,22,23,110,143 --set --name IN_THROTTLE --rsource and so forth. But when I reload the config file and do an iptables --list | grep bridge then I see nothing. I cannot discern what it is that I am doing wrong. Obviously there is something about bridge0 as an interface option that iptables does not like but it is not giving me any error message. KVM with bridge in one interface

Hi, I have only one ethernet port in a remote server. (eth0) I have a public address with x.x.x.164 netmask 255.255.255.240 gw x.x.x.161 and want to use in my guest OS the next available ip address (x.x.x.165 netmask 255.255.255.240 gw x.x.x.161) Is this posible with brctl to achieve this? I did a file called ifcfg-xenbr0 with: DEVICE=xenbr0 TYPE=Bridge BOOTPROTO=dhcp ONBOOT=yes then reboot, after that i use: # brctl addif xenbr0 eth0 I was connected to my remote server but problems begin when I assigned the x.x.x.165 ip addres to the guest OS with virt-manager to begin installation. I lost the remote connection. Maybe I miss something like this? : iptables -I FORWARD -m physdev –physdev-is-bridged -j ACCEPT to avoid loosing the connection ? i'm still receiving ping from x.x.x.165 but x.x.x.164 :(

I am having a couple of iptables issues with this type of setup myself. The RH manual says to insert a rule into the FORWARD chain like this: -A FORWARD -m physdev --physdev-is-bridged -j ACCEPT However, for the host does this not mean that every packet is accepted. As far as I can discern from the documentation, when one sets up a physically bridged network on a kvm host then every packet arrives across the bridge interface and, insofar as the host is concerned, anything that it does not orginate itself is forwarded. I may be wrong on this, but the behaviour of my ssh filters since putting that command in the FORWARD chain indicates that something along those lines is occurring. The i/f eth0 seems to have no relevence to iptables rules for the host instance. -- *** E-Mail is NOT a SECURE channel *** James B.
