Question on best way of configuring this

I have a Windows XP machine that I don't use very often, but I leave it powered up because once in a blue moon I need to remotely access it (eg from work), and to keep the Antivirus software up to date. When I do use it at the console I'm mostly doing basic video editting or transcoding (eg from transferred TiVo content). I sometimes play older games on it (eg Carmaggedon or Worms 2; I'm not into Warcrack, or City Of Heros or anything that needs a super-duper gaming card). I also have an aging Linux machine. This is my main workstation, although I primarily access it as a server (ssh into it, screen). I do occaisionally use the console as an X display, eg when scanning stuff or previewing my nroff documents before sending them to the printer. This machine has all my email, runs leafnode etc etc. What I'd like to do is run them both as virtual instances on a new machine (quad core duo) I've ordered. What I would really like to have is something like the dom0 being on tty0, map the Linux domU consoles to tty1->5, allow the Linux domU X server to run fullscreen on tty6, and have the windows GUI appear fullscreen on tty7. I really don't want to remotely access the windows GUI (it makes video editting harder, and game playing almost impossible), and would want to avoid displaying it inside another X session. Ideally it'd feel like a "real" machine. Does this sound like a feasible option? -- rgds Stephen

Having to compile software on another machine > isn't fun for me. Well here's a clue. Xen Enterprise server uses CentOS as the OS for dom0. I believe they still use CentOS 4.X (maybe the latest uses 5.X) and the Xen 3.2 package was built on CentOS. Xen 3.2 performs very very well on CentOS 5.X (some say even better then the Xen shipping with CentOS). At my site I have setup a site specific repository for all in-house compiled RPMs and I have my kickstarts add the repo with a higher priority then the base/updates/extras repos for CentOS. Then I run a 'yum update' and my Xen 3.2 packages replace the CentOS ones on install and are there after updated from my internal repo. > - I just want to understand this better. Yes, the VM's disks are located on the SAN and either mounted on the Xen host and booted off them, or the Xen VM's do an iSCSI boot directly off the SAN. There are a myriad of ways of doing this and it will depend on the VMs and Xen desired configuration. I run approximately 16 virtual guests off a single iSCSI server and the performance is very good. Of course I have the disk array setup as a RAID-10 for the VM's as 90% of all disk access will be random across the OS disks. I have a separate iSCSI server that provides the application data storage with different array types based on the storage. Currently we have used the iSCSI Enterprise Target software from sourceforge to provide cheap iSCSI and we are graduating to an appliance based solution soon. The appliance costs from Dell have dropped to a thin margin over the costs of the raw disks, so there isn't much cost factor any more. Talking around 20K for 15 146GB 15K SAS disks iSCSI array where once it was around 80-90K. Of course with the iSCSI Enterprise Target you can start simple with SATA and a cheap array. Fast clock under VMWare

Hi everyone, I have been struggling with having the clock of Linux VM's (including CentOS 4.6 and 5.1) running very fast under VMWare, no matter what I have tried. My platform: - AMD Turion X2 TL-60 - AMD 690 chipset with integrated Radeon x1250 (probably doesn't concern in this case) - Windows Vista Ultimate x64, all Windows Update patches loaded (no SP1 yet) - 4GB RAM - VMWare Workstation 6.0.2 - BIOS has no options to disable power management, etc. On my host PC - C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Workstation\Config.ini, put in host.cpukHz = "2000000", host.noTSC = "TRUE", ptsc.noTSC = "TRUE" - AMD's dual core optimizer loaded On CentOS 5.1 VM - use kernel options "noapic nolapic nosmp clocksource=acpi_pm" - use "divider=10" option in the regular kernel - try the vm version of the kernel in centos-plus with the same kernel options in first line No matter what I try, the CentOS clocks are still fast - at a rate of almost 2 seconds for every 1 real second. What other things I can do in order to fix this? M. Chan

Issue with dom0 xen ballooning

Hi all, I'm having issue with my Centos 5.1 /Xen installation. I'm having some dom0 running 2.6.18-53.1.6.el5xen (x86_64). On the dom0 where the load is high (more than 70% of total system memory consumed by dom0 and domU) we have a lot of "memory squeeze ". The result is that the domU seems to be blocked (no network/no disk acces/ etc....). Looking for a solution in xen user list, it seems the problem come from dom0 xen ballooning. With this option the dom0 attempt to use the maximum of the system memory and "balloon" is memory when new domU needs memory. To resolve it, we have to fix the dom0 memory usage to avoid dom0 ballooning and crash in our production environnemnt. The solution seems to pass a parameter at xen boot time (in grub) to limit dom0 memory usage : " dom0_mem=256M " As anyone encounter this type of problems ? Is there any other solution than limitting dom0 memory usage ? CentOS 5.1 guide for VMware Fusion

Hello all, I recently created a VM running CentOS 5.1 x86-64 for development purposes. Along the way, I found a number of fixes to various issues one can experience under VMware and decided to turn my documentation into a general guide that others might benefit from. I have not found any guides for VMware Fusion on OS X, so I figured it is a worthwhile endeavor. It is likely that most or all of this guide applies to VMware Workstation as well. VMWare Server -- Which Kernel is Best

I read http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=2189 Summary: CentOS is not getting optimal performance in a virtualized environment and on slow cpus but I am not sure I understand the current best practice. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Options as I see them: 1. Run kernel-vm-2.6.18-53.1.4.el5 with clocksource=pit until the excellent CentOS team builds the latest kernel into a VM kernel (This is working for me now). 2. Run kernel-2.6.18-53.1.6.el5 with divider=10 and hope the clock does not go fast (I have not tried this). -- Sincerely, John Thomas
