How to diagnose "Unable to handle kernel paging request" kernel panic?

Does anyone know how to diagnose the error "Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address xxxxxx"? I got this error (followed by a panic and a crash) on a server running CentOS 4.4 with the 2.6.9-42.0.8.ELsmp kernel. The machine is based on an Intel 975XBX2 motherboard (975X chipset). I have built several of these and they have been extremely stable. This one is an Asterisk PBX. It was up for over a month before this crash. Here is the exact kernel build info, from the restart log: "Linux version 2.6.9-42.0.8.ELsmp (mockbuild(a)builder6.centos.org) (gcc version 3.4.6 20060404 (Red Hat 3.4.6-3)) #1 SMP Tue Jan 30 12:33:47 EST 2007" Does the call trace indicate something to do with the ext3 file system? I am not running RAID on this machine, it is just a single drive with LVM. Any help that the list could be would be really great. installing raid1 via serial terminal during install

Hello, I'm wanting to install centos via serial terminal on to a box without monitor. It will be administered remotely via ssh. I've got two disks in it and would like to use raid1 with this system, but i'd like to get this going preferably during or immediately after the install. My problem as i see it is installing grub on to both hard disks, you have to get a shell window during the install for that otherwise the box won't boot. Does anyone have this working? Thanks. Dave.

Now, this is an embarrassing situation. I spoke too soon. After installing CentOS 5, I left this particular system unpatched *on purpose* so that I can observe the kernel oops caused by the known cifs bug. Because the system crash did not occur for a few days, I had forgotten about it. Apparently, the find command triggered the crash. Now that the system is proven unstable, I will go ahead and install the patched cifs.ko provided by Johnny. Sorry for the noise, but I needed to confirm that the patch really works. Akemi

Base install not on first CD with centos5?

I have everything unchecked in my package selection screen except for the default packages in "base" and it wants CDs 1, 2 and 3. Is this an upstream problem or centos problem? How should I follow up on this? A bug report in centos's bugzilla? Mike

centos 5.0 server iso

Hello, In 4.4 there was a 4.4 server iso. I have not found the same for 5.0, and really don't want to download six isos. Does anyone know where the 5.0 server iso is? Thanks. Dave.

Issues with r8169 gige on boot.

Hi all, I've recently upgraded a system from CentOS 4.4 to CentOS5, and now when the system boots, the r8169 ethernet card doesn't come up. After the boot sequence, if I type "ifup eth1 | ifup eth1.10 | ifup eth1.203" then the adapter starts up ok. It seems to be something with the boot sequence it loads the ethernet adapters a different way around (ie 4.4 eth0 is now eth1 and eth1 is now eth0). Is there a way to revert this? Will there be a centos 5 -centosplus repo? Now I not asking for one now or when will there be one, just if there will be one in the future. I am interested in an updated kernel for the various flavors of file systems, jfs,xfs,etc. Thanks.

Strange content in the kernel dmesg traces

I am experimenting with the kernel (as some of you may know), and I have added a whole slew of traces in some relatively sensitive code in the lower levels of the page cache and i/o functions. Most of this tracing not only works but is highly revealing as to what the kernel is doing and why. However, I am now getting this odd content in the trace log (dmesg), and I cannot figure out what it is or why it is there.
