CentOS 4.4 Xen Guest on CentOS 5 Host

linux dd on CentOS 5 x86

Howdy, I had to use a driver disk today to install CentOS 5 on a Poweredge 1900 /w a 3ware 9650SE controller card. The only gotcha I noticed is that for some reason CentOS 5 will not read driver disk files off of a thumbdrive (usb key) when it is being emulated as auto, hard disk, or floppy disk. (it saw the thumb drive as SDA in all instances) however when I plugged in a USB floppy drive (the poweredge 1900 is sans floppy controller) it still saw the drive as SDA and it read the files off of the USB floppy disk. My question, I suppose is what is the difference between a floppy emulated SDA and a USB floppy SDA? Thanks, -Drew

Raid 1 newbie question

Hi I have a Raid 1 centos 4.4 setup and now have this /proc/mdstat output: [root@server admin]# cat /proc/mdstat Personalities : [raid1] md2 : active raid1 hdc2[1] hda2[0] 1052160 blocks [2/2] [UU] md1 : active raid1 hda3[0] 77023552 blocks [2/1] [U_] md0 : active raid1 hdc1[1] hda1[0] 104320 blocks [2/2] [UU] What happens with md1 ? Problem installing Windows under Xen CentOS 5

Hi, I'm having trouble installing Windows on a fully virtualized VM on CentOS 5. The installation hangs on the blue screen saying "Setup is starting Windows". The hardware is a dual processor dual core AMD Opteron 2218 with 8GB RAM and SATA disks, CentoOS 5 i386 will all patches applied. On the same machine I have successfully installed two VM's running CentOS 5, one paravirtualized and one with full virtualization. I have tried to install Windows 2003 server and Windows XP with the same result. The installation media are iso images of the Windows MSDN DVDs. When the installation hangs at the "Setup is starting Windows" screen the virt-manager shows 25% cpu utilization for the guest ( I think this represents 100% CPU usage for the guest as it has 1 vcpu assigned out the maximum 4 vcpus). I am running the virt-manager and the virtual machine console over ssh as dom0 has no X server installed. Has anyone seen this problem? Any suggestions? Regards, Radu

Error trying to mount NFS volume from kickstart in CentOS 5

The post section of the kickstart configuration file I have been using in CentOS4 looks like this: %post mount centosmirror:/var/www/html/ks /mnt /mnt/ks/post/post.sh > /root/post_install.log 2>&1 umount /mnt I tried to do my first CentOS 5 kickstart installation today using an identical post section, but the post install script did not run. After instrumenting the kickstart a bit, I found that the above mount command failed with the following error message: mount.nfs: Input/output error Not a very helpful error message -- any clues as to what is going on? It's a little tricky and time consuming to debug kickstart problems like these, so I thought I'd ask the list and hopefully save some time. If I execute that mount command after rebooting the system, it works just fine. Thanks, Alfred

We're running a mix of ext3 and xfs file systems on CentOS 4 workstations at our site. We have benefitted greatly from the increased performance and fast (crash recovery) reboot times that we get from xfs. We're currently running CentOS kernel 2.6.9-42.0.8.EL and xfs version 0.2-1. We have one host where we've got issues. It's a (very) busy imap server with external scsi hardware raid, dual Xeon CPUs, and 8GB of RAM (it runs the hugemem kernel). Twice now in the last few weeks we've seen it hang with the follow log message repeated many times in the logs at the time of the hang: XFS: possible memory allocation deadlock in kmem_alloc (mode:0x250) I see this error discussed in: http://oss.sgi.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=410 ...and I'm wondering if the fixes mentioned in that bug are present in the 0.2-1 centosplus xfs drivers, or if it could get included in an xfs update for CentOS 4. Having trouble with FreeNX, Need help to make it work perfectly

Hi thanks for the reply i am really grateful if you can tell me how to make FreeNX work like charm. I am really stuck with it, and after reinstalling the server is definitely pissing off my boss. Please help me thanks. =========================== Please let me review how my FreeNX was screwed up. After i fresh install my CentOS 5, I 'yum install freenx' and so if i am not wrong I actually install freenx 0.5.0-12 or something.... but i think ya shd be -12. Ok... so after i install freenx through yum. I follow what's on http://wiki.centos.org/FreeNX I --adduser and --passwd etc. Then copy the /etc/nxserver/client_id*.key over to my NX Client on Windows. Initially all works out. The NX session starts and i can do what i want over this remote session, and i proceed with updating of the critical updates for other apps from yum. The problem comes after i do this, right after the yum update. I choose to reboot my server. I reboot the server over the NX remote session. By going System -> Log Off -> Reboot. The NX Client's Window automatically closed (in quite a violent way with error msg). Then the server reboot. After the reboot, I try to reconnect to Server again using NX.
