recording sound: how 2 control recording level?

Hi gang! I'm trying to record (to .wav files) sound coming in on the line input of my sound card (in this case, output of a tape deck). For LISTENING purposes, I can control the level with the Gnome Mixer. However, the RECORDING level is not affected by the mixer. As a result, the recorded audio is badly clipped and horribly distorted. I don't understand enough about how this stuff works to have a clue how to troubleshoot this problem. Can someone offer helpful advice? Isa Soundcard under CentOS 5

Hello, Under Fedora Core 6 I used to integrate the soundcard of my notebook with modprobe snd-opl3sa2. Now, after changing my system to CentOS 5, I could not find this module for my isa soundcard any more. # ls -al /lib/modules/2.6.18-8.1.1.el5/kernel/sound/isa/ insgesamt 24 drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 27. Apr 04:09 . drwxr-xr-x 9 root root 4096 26. Apr 18:15 .. drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 27. Apr 03:36 sb Both system-config-soundcard and alsaconf, compiled from sources, don't find my isa soundcard. Hi, I am running raid 1 on a centos 4.4. One of the harddisk (sda1) failed. How can i carry on running the server using only sda2? Thank you

Bringing up interface eth0:

I'm installing CentOS 4.4 64-bit Enterprise on a Dell Dimension with and AMD dual core 3800+. When it starts to load eth0 it hangs. I have not found a way to break out of it. Or how to boot at run level 0. So newby Question 1 how do I get it to boot without loading eth0 so I can make changes? Question 2 what is a likely problem and fix. Question 3 what is good documentation and other resource to find answers for sys admin questions. Thanks, Russ

Problems with RAID0 array on new server

Hello, i recently installed Centos 5 on a new server with a single scsii disk. After the installation, i added 2 additional disks that were once the components of a raid0 array on another server. I get some errors and am unable to start the array the following is an extract from dmesg output: md: Autodetecting RAID arrays. md: could not open unknown-block(8,17). md: could not open unknown-block(8,33). i then examined each disk in fdisk Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 1 17501 17921008 fd Linux raid autodetect Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdc1 1 17501 17921008 fd Linux raid autodetect I tried to re-create the array and get this: mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md0 --level=0 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 mdadm: chunk size defaults to 64K mdadm: Cannot open /dev/sdb1: No such device or address mdadm: Cannot open /dev/sdc1: No such device or address mdadm: create aborted yet obviously the devices are there. what else should i look at. putting the drives back in the old server, and the array comes up with all data intact. CentOS, RTL8196 and jumbo frames.

Hi all, I've just upgraded my home network to a Linksys SRW2024 (with lovely vlan trunking support!) and I'm trying to enable jumbo frames. When I try to set the MTU of an rtl8169 based network card (it's a Netgear RA311), it comes up with an error stating: # ifconfig eth1 mtu 9000 SIOCSIFMTU: Invalid argument The only options it will take are 1500 or below.
