VM differences between CentOS and current vanilla

After running into some VM problems with the new CentOS 4.4 kernel, which I suspect are VMWare related, I built 2.6.16.29 using the FC5 .config file for 2.6.15 and "make oldconfig". It seems to have resolved the "page allocation failure" problem. But I find its behavior to be a bit odd. This is a 4GB system. min_free_kb is at the default, which is 3841. So I would expect Free memory to hover around 4MB. However, instead, it seems to seek out about 150M free. If I do a dd from /dev/md0 to /dev/null, the free memory does drop to around 25MB. But then, as the system is used, it drifts back to... about 150M. Swap varies between 100M and 500M, and buffer+cache runs around 500M. I'm pretty sure that we access enough different data that it should be using some of the 150M free for buffers+cache. Swappiness is set to the default 60. Any comments? Thanks, Steve

Hello Rachid, Module for Intel 3945 is only for kernels above 2.6.15. I'm afraid that you will have to change the kernel (compile your own one) It's funny for me that Intel 3945ABG is so popular and common Linux dists doesn't support that wireless card. yum libxml2mod

I have a problem using yum. it gives me the following error [root@mail1 src]# yum update yum There was a problem importing one of the Python modules required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was: /usr/lib/python2.3/site-packages/libxml2mod.so: undefined symbol: xmlNewDocPI Please install a package which provides this module, or verify that the module is installed correctly. It's possible that the above module doesn't match the current version of Python, which is: 2.3.4 (#1, Mar 10 2006, 06:12:09) [GCC 3.4.5 20051201 (Red Hat 3.4.5-2)] If you cannot solve this problem yourself, please go to the yum faq at: http://wiki.linux.duke.edu/YumFaq I have looked in Internet and others forums but i couldn't find any answer on how to fix this error.

I partitioned it to the same specs as the 2 ide drives as per the bottom of fdisk -l. Now, trying to go by: http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-4-Manual/admin-guide/ 5.9.8.2 Creating RAID Arrays they state the following: Next, it is necessary to create the /etc/raidtab file. This file is responsible for the proper configuration of all RAID arrays on your system. The file format (which is documented in the raidtab(5) man page) is relatively straightforward. Here is an example /etc/raidtab entry for a RAID 1 array: ummm...1.)I think this is part of the old raidtools thang...not mdadm but I am not sure. 2.) there is no man raidtab on this box which is a "everything" install.. so considering this..lol I'm lost. kk, right now...I just formatted all the partitions and (I should have done this before ) I am checking for bad blocks. If it finds some I'll just redo it or whatever I have to do. At one point I was able to mdadm /dev/md0 1 & 2 --add sda1 2 &3 and cat /proc/mdstat would show sda1 2 &3 as in the arrays but then they would not populate. I can't remember but I think I gave them mount points but wait, I was having a hard time finding the proper syntax for that as well anyway, after rebooting...it was all gone. this ain't nice thx John Rose

Howerver nothing is in any of the slots on the riser card. Problems with MySQL

Hello, Sorry for posting this here, but i've posted in MySQL list and no one answered. I'm trying to set a password for a user with the command: mysql> set password for gamito@localhost=password('blabla'); but i always get the error: ERROR 1133 (42000): Can't find any matching row in the user table although i'm pretty sure that the user exists. I'm using MySQL version 4.1.20 from CentOS 4.4 This neves happened to me :( Any help would be appreciated. Best Regards, AR
