RFC: Use git am for patchqueue

OK, I've got a basic initial port of the xen package up to 4.4.0. But before I post that, I wanted to get comments on a new method of managing the Xen part of the patchqueue. You can find the RFC branch here: repo: http://github.com/gwd/sig-virt-xen branch: out/git-am-patchqueue-RFC-v1 The basic idea is to put as much as possible into a 'git am' file. This file can easily be imported into git on top of a Xen git repository with "git am [filename]", rebased / edited like any branch, and the exported again with "git format-patch -N --stdout [release-tag]". I've got a copy of the Xen repo with the patchqueue applied as a branch here: repo: http://github.com/gwd/xen branch: centos/pq/4.2.4-v1 Unfortunately this only works for patches to things in the core Xen repo; patches to qemu, or the out-of-tree blktap will need to be managed separately still. However, at the moment those patches are kind of small. Having the patchqueue in this format made rebasing to 4.4 a *lot* easier. Any thoughts? -George

Xen4CentOS: Unnecessary gpxe / ipxe obsoletes

I installed CentOS6 with the xen4centos set of packages; then I tried to install KVM (for performance comparison), I got the following error in YUM: --> Processing Dependency: /usr/share/gpxe/e1000-0x100e.rom for package: 2:qemu-kvm-0.12.1.2-2.415.el6_5.4.x86_64 Package gpxe-roms-qemu is obsoleted by ipxe-roms-qemu, but obsoleting package does not provide for requirements I manually downloaded the gpxe package and installed it with no problems, so there are no actual conflicts in the files. Thus, ipxe probably *shouldn't* obsolete gpxe -- there are no conflicts between the two, and ipxe doesn't provide what gpxe does. If I had already installed KVM, and was toying with the idea of giving Xen a spin, this may have been enough to deter me. I checked with the XenServer guys, and their version of ipxe doesn't obsolete gpxe; so that must have been something that was introduced in CentOS. -George

Mailing list policy

Hi all, right now the centos-virt(a)centos.org mailing list is set up such that all posts by people not subscribed to the list are auto-discarded. This is in line with all the other lists and I propose that we keep things as they are. The reason for this is that traditionally the amount of spam that centos lists are getting was very high. I am not sure this holds for centos-virt(a)centos.org. It may be worth trying a change to see whether it would be manageable to use moderation of posts by people not subscribed to the list. VMs failing to restart

This is a problem I've had on and off under CentOS5 and CentOS6, with both xen and kvm. Currently, it happens consistently with kvm on 6.5, e.g. with every kernel update. I *think* it generally worked fine with the 6.4 kernels. There are 7 VMs running on a 6.5, x86_64, 8GB RAM host, each with 512MB RAM and using the e1000 NIC. I picked this specific NIC because the default does not allow reliable monitoring through SNMP (IIRC). The host has two bonded NICs with br0 running on top. When the host reboots, the VMs will generally hang bringing up the virtual NIC, and I need to go through several iterations of destroy/create, for each VM, to get them running. p2v conversion questions

Hi, I am in the process of converting a w2k8 physical server to C6.5 kvm. In reading https://access.redhat.com/site/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux… It says that virtio-win rpm is required. I know that the virtio-win rpms are not available for Centos 6.5 but the drivers are available for download at https://alt.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/virtio-win/latest/images/bin/ My question is does any have anyone have any documentation that shows where I should put the virtio-win drivers in order to get a successful migration? Is there any better documentation that I should use to get the migration done? I have been googling all afternoon with no real progress. Some old threads I have found seem to indicate that /usr/share/virtio-win is the correct place but those threads are from 2011.
