New nx/freenx RPMS for CentOS-4 i386 in the Testing Repo

There are new versions of nx and freenx for CentOS-4 i386 in the testing repo: freenx-0.5.0-11.c4.i386.rpm nx-2.1.0-2.c4.i386.rpm I am using this on 3 servers and it seems at least as stable as the previous versions. These RPMS roll in the latest nx-2.1.x server components from nomachine.org (current CentOS-4 version has nx-1.5.x server components). The full screen patch was retained across versions and seems to work OK here as well. If you are using the CentOS version of NX / FreeNX, please test this version and provide feedback on this list. Barring any show stopping negative feedback, these RPMS will replace the current versions in CentOS extras in 2 weeks. CentOS Testing repository openldap-2.3.27.el4.centos with smbk5pwd for i386 and x86_64

There are new versions of openldap-2.3.27-4.el4.centos in the testing repository for i386 and x86_64. http://wiki.centos.org/Repositories (for info on the testing repository) This version of openldap is the current version in RHEL5B2 and Fedora Core 6. The purpose of this build is that I modified openldap to produce the smbk5pwd overlay from the contrib directory in the openldap source. smbk5pwd is an openldap module/overlay that keeps a Samba PDC's LDAP passwords in sync regardless of if the change is made via LDAP (ldappasswd), windows (usually smbpasswd), or Unix (passwd). If any of the 3 LDAP passwords are modified, the overlay modifies all three ... keeping them in sync. I have tested this version on 3 servers in a test environment on i386. Instructions on how to setup the slapd.conf file are included in /usr/share/doc/openldap-servers-xxxx/README.smbk5pwd This version requires you to upgrade your databases if you are using a bdb backend ... you need to save your data before you upgrade .. something like this: cd service ldap stop slapcat > slapcat.out upgrade RPMS cd /var/lib/ldap remove all old databases make sure you have a DB_CONFIG file in /var/lib/ldap modify your /etc/openldap/slapd.conf file to point to these (they used to be in /var/run with no openldap dir): pidfile /var/run/openldap/slapd.pid argsfile /var/run/openldap/slapd.args also add this index to slap.conf: index uniqueMember pres see the above listed README file if you want to add smbk5pwd slapadd ~/slapcat.out chown -R ldap.ldap /var/lib/ldap slaptest slapindex -v service ldap start ------------------------------------ Thanks, Johnny Hughes

malloc(): memory corruption

Hi, all! I run httpd with our site and get in error_log: *** glibc detected *** malloc(): memory corruption: 0x000000552b92eda0 *** [Wed Dec 27 06:45:16 2006] [notice] child pid 3646 exit signal Aborted (6) for 50% query. This is present on 4 servers. I don't think about hardware memory problem. What I can do for fix it? Thanks!

possible default changes to yum.conf

All, What do people think about modifying the default yum.conf file to contain the following: plugins=1 This is an essential setting if people want to install the 2 "extras" plugins yum-plugin-fastestmirror and yum-plugin-priorities (both of which I highly recommend). CentOS currently ships with no plugins setting yum.conf, and the default is 0. If installing plugins, this setting must be manually added to yum.conf. This is documented in the readme's for the plugins, in the "installing software with yum" guide in CentOS Docs, and on the CentOS wiki ... however people still mess up their machines because they install the plugins, do not set the setting, and do upgrades. There are no plans to ship any plugins in the default CentOS-4, however I think it would be good to turn on the "plugins=1" setting by default. That way when people install plugins, they will work without requiring mods to yum.conf. I think that is what most users expect, as it has been the default in Fedora Core since at least FC3 and it is the default in RHEL 5 beta 2. What does everyone else think? Thanks, Johnny Hughes

CentOS port to the ARM architecture?

Hi! I'm interested in doing a CentOS port to the ARM architecture. Due to ARM switching to a new ABI (EABI) that isn't 100% supported until glibc 2.4/2.5-ish, kernel 2.6.16-ish and gcc 4.1, porting CentOS 4 isn't really an option if you want to run that new ABI. But since RHEL5 will have all the necessary versions of the above packages, I'd be very interested in running a version of RHEL5 on my ARM boxes, since I run CentOS (4.4 at the moment) on all my x86 machines as well. So far I have about 80% of Fedora Core 6 built for ARM, and with some minor gcc/glibc patching, it's been working pretty well for me so far. I suspect that the same patches applied to RHEL5 will produce a working version of RHEL5 for ARM without much effort. I wonder what steps are necessary and what the criteria to become an "official" CentOS arch port, apart from (obviously!) producing a set of RPMS. cheers, Lennert

X11R6 include path

Hello there, In our company we use CentOS on our build machines which mostly build software related to X11. For some reasons the path /usr/X11R6/include is not known during building unless i specify -I/usr/X11R6/include path to g++ options. I wonder if there isn't any environmen variable that I could set so that I don't have to specify it in each makefile. I don't have this problem using different distros (e.g. ArchLinux, Fedora) so I suppose that this path is compiled into g++ directly. If there isn't such a variable that I could set, then I wonder if the best I can do is to create different makefile that set's this variable and which will be included in all the other makefiles. Also some compilers complain with a message like this: Line 1254 : cc1plus: warning: include location "/usr/X11R6/include" is unsafe for cross-compilation when this path is specified with the '-I' option. time stray on the latest centos release: 2.6.9-11.EL

Hi, The clock on my laptop seems to be straying dramatically from the real time even if I turn off ntpd. Could it be the clock applet itself? After I run rdate with ntpd off, it starts to stray right away. This started in the last two weeks after doing many updates. Has anyone else seen this, or even fixed it? Thanks in advance, Blair.

CentOS 4 and Intel D965 motherboards

Does anyone on the list have a magic ball that could tell when support for the D965-based motherboards will come to CentOS 4 (i386)? I've got a DG965RYCK that fails a CentOS 4.4 install early on (problems scanning the PCI bus). Fedora Core 6 installs just fine. If anyone has any information, or magic boot parameters to try, please let me know. ("Works for me" is OK too). Thanks much. Dave Thompson UW-Madison

Updated PHP packages are now in the c4-testing repository

There are updated packages for php version 5.1.6-1.2 in the c4-testing repository available at dev.centos.org for i386 and x86_64 arches. Also included is an update to php-pear. This update should also resolve the direct install issue experienced by some where php-pear conflicted with the package in the base repository. Please test these and report any issues you might have, as these will hopefully be the upgrade path for php5 in centosplus.
