Yesterday evening (Tuesday December 8, 2009) a forum thread [1] was started by Stefan (under the ID of "gigglesworth") relating to the above subjects. As is well known, ELRepo provided the fasttrack packages during the lifetime of CentOS 5.3 but following on from Karanbir's assertion that CentOS will provide the fasttrack packages for 5.4 we, at ELRepo, have stepped down from providing that service. Will CentOS-devs please have a look at the above mentioned thread and then respond, accordingly, to the OP. Regards, Alan. Artwork pre-prep for v6

Hi all, as already stated in IRC I am going to start pre-preparation of a new artwork for v6. This will include a custom Plymouth theme as well as wallpaper and icon packages. If one wants to complain, do it now, please. Otherwise I will just go ahead. Best Regards Marcus

disk i/o stalls with mptsas since upgrade to centos 5.4

Hi! On two different machines, I've been experiencing disk I/O stalls after upgrading to the CentOS 5.4 kernel. Both machines have an LSI 1068E MPT SAS (mptsas) controller connected to a Chenbro CK13601 36-port SAS expander, with one machine having 16 1T WD disks hooked up to it, and the other having a mix of about 20 WD/Seagate/Samsung/Hitachi 1T and 2T disks. When there's a disk I/O stall, all reads and writes to any disk behind the SAS controller/expander just hang for a while (typically for almost exactly eight seconds), so not just the I/O to one particular disk or a subset of the disks. The disks on other (on-board SATA) controllers still pass I/O requests when the SAS I/O stalls. I hacked up the attached (dirty) perl script to demonstrate this effect -- it will read /proc/diskstats in a tight loop, and keep track of which request entered the request queue when, and when it completed, and it will WTF if a request took more than a second. (The same thing can probably be done with blktrace, but I was lazy.) New requests get submitted, but the pending ones fail to complete for a while, and then they all complete at once. This happens on kernel-2.6.18-164.11.1.el5, while reverting to the latest CentOS 5.3 kernel (kernel-2.6.18-128.7.1.el5) makes the issue go away again, i.e. no more stalls. It doesn't seem to matter whether the I/O load is high or not -- the stalls happen even under almost no load at all. Before I dig into this further, has anyone experienced anything similar? One is used for servers and does an [almost] minimal install (with support for ssh -Y); the other one is almost 100% the actual ks that I use for the workstations (it adds some 3rd party software, beyond what Centos provides). Talk about existing forums

hi guys, One of the things that came up from the last chat about the language specific websites, was that there was no one on that call who actually used the forums. With the help of Akemi, I've been able to setup a meeting for the existing english forum moderators to come together and have a chat about: 1) what we have right now 2) Whats broken 3) whats really good 4) where they would like the forums to be in the next 6 months 5) Where they would like the forums to be in the next 12 months 6) The idea of 'English' as being just another language Its a bit short notice, but the meeting is setup to happen on Wednesday 9th Dec at 2300 UTC. Its the only time that worked for all concerned - in the next few weeks period. Apart from the existing forum moderators, anyone interested in the conversation is more than welcome to come along. Lets all sync up at 22:50 on #centos-devel(a)irc.freenode.net and take it from there. Also, lets try and timebox initial discussion to 40 min with a further 10 min after that to summarise and plan future actions. - KB

removing inaffective SAN partitions from the system .....

Dear All, I have installed CentOS release 5.2 (Final). EMC SAN partition is mounted by using EMC Powerpath for resolving multiple paths. I was able write and read data over to SAN partition without any issues. Subsequently I have unmounted EMC SAN partition from the system and deleted LUN using Navisphere user interface. After rebooting system, I still see SAN mappings in system.
