Proposal: CentOS Public Board Meetings

In January of 2021, the CentOS Board of Directors opened our monthly meetings to all SIG chairs, in a first step towards more transparent governance. We wanted to see how the larger audience changed the meeting dynamics, if at all, as well as welcoming a broader pool of voices. We are now ready for the second part of this process. Starting in the August meeting, we will be inviting the entire CentOS community to attend these meetings. Due to the nature of the Internet, we won’t be simply publishing the meeting URL, as this often leads to disruptive behavior in meetings, as I am sure many of you have experienced. Rather, in the week before the meeting, we’ll send, to this list, a way to request an invitation to the meeting. In this way, we hope to limit the incidence of such disruptions, while also making the meeting available to anyone who wishes to attend. We will be working on the rules of engagement for these meetings, but they will be, at minimum: * Wait to be recognized by the Chair before speaking * Respect the Chair when told your time to speak is over - this will allow us to remain on agenda, and complete the meetings in the allotted time * In the event that there are Board-confidential topics, these will be put at the end of the meeting, in Executive Session, and guests will be asked to leave. We hope to minimize these items, but they do sometimes happen. The most common scenarios in which this may happen are personnel issues, or information that Red Hat wishes to share with the Board, but is not yet public. * Muting of participants, or, in extreme situations, ejection from the meeting, is at the sole discretion of the Chair. * Meetings will be recorded, and published to YouTube (possibly with edits/redactions, as approved by the Directors). Thus, by joining the meeting you consent to have your presence at the meeting, and anything you say during the meeting, made public. Because there will seldom be time for Q&A during the meeting itself, we plan to add a post-meeting IRC office hours session for followup questions. This will probably be scheduled for a week after the board meeting, to allow time to publish meeting minutes We welcome your comments about the above proposal, and thank you all for your patience as we implement these changes to our governance process.

Proposal: Add pkg- prefix to package names in CentOS dist-git

Gitlab cannot support an undocumented set of Git repository names. Currently, this list appears to contain at least these names: badges blame blob builds commits create create_dir edit files find_file new preview raw refs tree update wikis There may be additional constraints for: environments gitlab-lfs info We have at least one collision today, tree. One way to avoid these problems is to prefix all package names with “pkg-”. This way, future collisions become extremely unlikely, at the cost of a one-time large rename. The alternative would be to main an exception mechanism for colliding package names such as “tree”. This has been the current approach, but as far as I can tell, it is not working. Implementing this change depends on the completion of the package removal process because it does not appear worthwhile to rename packages which no longer exist in the distribution. Thanks, Florian

GNOME crashes in Wayland whenever I try to move a file in Nautilus

This behavior only started after this morning's pile of updates. I run GNOME with Wayland, and whenever I try to move a file in Nautilus, the GNOME session crashes, and I'm thrown into a console. I tried an older kernel, and the behavior is the same. This only happens in Wayland. In an X11 session, everything works, so the workaround is to run X11. I saw that gnome-shell was one of the packages upgraded today. Is that where a bug should be filed? I don't know where to look for this in the logs.

CentOS Stream 9 timetable

Can anybody provide a rough estimate on a release (Alpha, Beta, RC, etc) of CentOS Stream 9 -- the point where we can install and then update from the repo?

The Call for Presentations for the October CentOS Dojo closes next weekend - September 6th, 00:01 UTC. FYI: As it currently stands, we have enough content for just one day, and so will probably cancel day two of the event. Unless ... more of you are interested in presenting on your work in and around CentOS. We want to hear from the SIGs about what they're working on. We want to hear from CPE and the CentOS Stream crew about what's coming in the months and years ahead. So, don't wait. Get your talk proposals in soon! --Rich

freetype package missed in repo

I wonder why this package not available anymore? # LANG=C yum reinstall freetype Last metadata expiration check: 1:04:59 ago on Wed Aug 4 00:38:21 2021. Installed package freetype-2.9.1-5.el8.x86_64 (from baseos) not available. Error: No packages marked for reinstall. Any clues? -- Thx Leon

With the recent thunderbird update (also provided via c8-plus repo), I wonder what will happen with this repo (maybe already answered). Will it also go EOL at the end of the year? -- Leon

CentOS Board town hall meeting, Aug 18, 1400 UTC
