Hi, The clock on my laptop seems to be straying dramatically from the real time even if I turn off ntpd. Could it be the clock applet itself? After I run rdate with ntpd off, it starts to stray right away. This started in the last two weeks after doing many updates. Has anyone else seen this, or even fixed it? Thanks in advance, Blair.

what's up with iproute-2.6.9-3.EL4.3.centos4?

There is an update to iproute, 2.6.9-3.EL4.3.centos4, in the i386 updates area, but not in x86_64. The changelog contains the terse comment "fix for CentOS bug #1476", which is here: <http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=1476>. Unfortunately, that doesn't indicate exactly what the issue was, or mention anything about being i386-only. Can someone shed some light on this? Metalinks for CentOS (all mirrors & checksums in one file)

Hi, Just another ping to see if CentOS is still interested in using metalink. It's especially useful for large files such as .ISOs. OpenOffice.org (http://distribution.openoffice.org/p2p/magnet.html) and 7 Linux/BSD distributions are using it to distribute their ISOs and other software updates. kernel.org will be using it soon as well. They can be automatically generated with software from your Romanian mirror at http://metalink.packages.ro/ aria2 RPMs for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4: http://dries.ulyssis.org/rpm/packages/aria2/info.html There's a metalink for CentOS at http://www.metalinker.org/samples/CentOS-4.4-i386-LiveCD.iso.metalink if anyone wants to try it out. Idea for single CD install

I tried the 4.4 LiveCD and find it has a very good selection from both GNOME and KDE. I request that a single installer CD (as opposed to the full 4 CD set or 1 DVD) be provided for installing the same contents to the hard disk, just like a regular install. Maybe you can do the installer on the same live CD, like the Kubuntu Desktop CD. Single CD installs will go a long way to popularize CentOS, IMHO. P.S: Seeing as this Live CD is based on the linux-live scripts, and SLAX which uses the same linux-live scripts can be just copied to HDD and run from there, is it also possible to do the same with CentOS? I think we should remove the obsolete 1.0.x versions from centosplus. background: - centosplus firefox for CentOS-3 was you backported version from CentOS-4 which was itself from FC5 with svg enable. - since 4.4 RH provides firefox 1.5 without svg inside base, I have re-added svg. Some days ago, there was the discussion about the new centos-release package with merged in yum (and other) configuration files instead of separate yumconf as until 4.3. I today tried using %trigger sections in the own package. After some testing I can say it looks good and seem to work fine (at least here). The trigger basically just moves the repo files known to be installed by centos-yumconf (and only those, so it has still to be adapted if CentOS e.g. adds more .repo files) to a different filename not used by yum. On removal of the own yumconf package, that backed up files are moved back to it's original name. The whole thing even seem to work over updates/removals/installs of both. Maybe that's also useful for others having that problem, but of course needs some adaption. Broken gtk+ package

I was just going to enter this in the bugs database, but creation of new accounts is apparently broken. (When I try to set the initial password after following the link in the confirmation email, "This account is protected. You are not allowed to access this until the account protection is lifted.") I have an x86_64 system, on which I must install the gtk+.i386 package. To begin with, only the x86_64 package is installed: # cat /etc/rpm/macros.query_format %_query_all_fmt %%{name}-%%{version}-%%{release}.%%{arch} # rpm -q gtk+ gtk+-1.2.10-33.centos4.x86_64 When I try to install the i386 version, I get this error: With yum: # yum -y install gtk+.i386 [...] Transaction Check Error: package gtk+-1.2.10-33.centos4 (which is newer than gtk+-1.2.10-33) is already installed With straight rpm -i: # rpm -i http://mirror.stanford.edu/yum/pub/centos/4.4/os/x86_64/CentOS/RPMS/gtk+-1.… package gtk+-1.2.10-33.centos4 (which is newer than gtk+-1.2.10-33) is already installed This problem only exists with the CentOS gtk+.x86_64 package, the RedHat one is fine. rpm -i --force works, and that is the workaround I'm using.

Distribution update and centosplus

Hi, number of RPMs in CentosPlus 4.4 is increasing slowly, but is increasing. Although it is mentioned in CentosPlus readme.txt: exclusions, release within a few days, etc. I think that Centos update should have to be released together with CentosPlus. CentOS-4.4 yumconf

The files /etc/yum.repos.d/* have moved from yumconf into centos-release. I don't know if this is planned but the net result is it broke my yum config (again) and unless there is a good reason I don't know of, it seems broken. I have a site specific /etc/yum.conf and I don't want any files in /etc/yum.repos.d/ I have a custom yumconf packages which prevents the centos version from installing the files in /etc/yum.repos.d/ but that is no longer effective. DAR - Disk ARchive packaged for CentOS?

Hi folks, I was searching for a backup tool simple and easy to use from command line to backup on DVD certain disks, even the whole OS. I was using mondoarchive almost succesfully but recently found what i think i was needing, it's called DAR (http://dar.linux.free.fr/) - i think im not the first that uses it - anyway, after searching for it already packaged for CentOS/RHEL/Fedora, i didn't find it. It's already packaged for debian, madrake, openSuSe, etc.. but i think there's not a pkg for RHEL systems. If somebody knows where i can find it i would appreciate it, or even if it's possible to include it in CentosPlus repo, TIA Jose.

4.4 enterprise update?

Why was the update to 4.4 automatic? Having a lot of new features automatically installed it not why we run an "enterprise" OS. I would like to be able to plan and test that kind of events. A better way of handling it would be what I am used with from another "enterprise" distro: Already yum looks for the release in the "Version:" header of the package specified in yum.conf:distroverpkg (centos-release in our case). However the version is 4 and not 4.4 as one would expect (and 4 in the 4.3 version as well). # rpm -qp --queryformat="%{version}\n" centos-release-4-3.2.src.rpm 4 # rpm -qp --queryformat="%{version}\n" centos-release-4-4.2.i386.rpm 4 This means that $releasever in our CentOS-Base.repo will be 4 and not 4.4 as we would like. If the the "Version:" of the centos-release rpm is in sync with the CentOS release version all you have to do to switch is: rpm -U "new centos-release rpm" yum update yum yum update Simple and predictable. /// joakim
