yum being aware of earlier releases

One of the things thats been in the pipeline for a long time is yum's awareness of the entire product lifecycle. The way we ship centos-release right now, it only 'sees' the latest release, so in the CentOS-5 tree, at the moment you can only 'see' 5.3/ - should you need an older kernel or anything from 5.0/5.1/5.2 - that requires going in and fiddling / creating repo stanza's So what I would like to do is add awareness of these tree's into the centos-release package, but leave them disabled. allowing people to do things like : yum --enablerepo=5.2 --showduplicates list kernel however, while that does look quite nice and clean it will fail to give the user what they mostly want. so they will need something like this : yum --enablerepo=base-5.2 --enablerepo=updates-5.2 --show duplicates list kernel which is more along the lines of what someone might be looking for - all kernel packages in the current release+updates, and all the kernel packages released in 5.2's cycle. So, to work around this and to actually create a '5.2' repository we could just have a set of metadata that includes all of 5.2 and 5.2 Updates. Or we can leave it like this, needing people to enable both base and updates if they want a list of all the packages. Are there any more options ? Is there any interest in the Extras/ Plus/ repo's being available like this as well ? also, while we are at it, we can also drop in repo stanza's for debuginfo's and sources. Over the next few weeks I am going to change the way the debuginfo packages are pushed - which will make it possible to push those in sync with the binary packages. Another related question, targeted mostly at Seth and James - can creatrepo'd metadata contain a baseurl that is on a different host ? Can yum handle that ? if so, we could have the metadata on mirror.centos.org while the older packages can stay at vault. -- Karanbir Singh : http://www.karan.org/ : 2522219@icq

Delayed CentOS updates and releases

Hi, We still have a problem with CentOS-5 updates not being available up to 3 to 7 days after they were announced by Red Hat and appeared on the FTP server. Additionally, CentOS 4.8 still hasn't been pushed to the QA team. Let's take 2 examples for C-5 updates, the recent kernel update and the firefox update. The kernel update is of severity Important, but the firefox update is deemed Critical. Apart from that, we haven't seen CentOS-4.8 hit the QA team for 1 month now. No reports of what is going on or what is stalling the release. Since the QA team will need some time to test installations, we can expect another 2 weeks delay, which would make it 7+ weeks before it hits the mirrors if it would be delivered today, which is unlikely. So I don't want to be the guy who is serving you the bad news, but unless we do something about it from an organisational point of view, things are unlikely to improve. I've just installed CentOS 5.3 on a workstation with an on-board 'Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8001 Gigabit Ethernet Controller' Anaconda used the skge.ko module for the install (over NFS), but once installed, it uses the sk98lin.ko driver However, /etc/modprobe.conf has the line: alias eth0 skge Anyone know which driver it should be using and how does the sk98lin.ko driver get loaded? IMHO the entire idea of "z/CentOS 5.3" faces serious devaluation if z/CentOS is unable to IPL within a "Hercules Iron" environment. After all it is for the most part those that have neither access to real iron, nor the licensed and supported variants of RHEL 5.3 that are interested in CentOS or that have no need for the level of support provisioned by an RHEL contract. In the case of z/systems, this would likely impel one to believe that the very same populous of users are monetarily challenged to obtaining the very bare iron needed to leverage "z/CentOS" thus leaving them with the Herculean option for their foray into z/Linux. Now, if the dysfunctional state of "z/CentOS 5.x" within Hercules is not CentOS centric, but Hercules centric, then the issue must be raised in the Hercules development community to compel its resolution. Getting some z's

CentOS Users/Developers: It interests me to find out if and or when any such CentOS 5 for z/system will be forthcoming? I use Hercules and would love to play with CentOS under z/system via the Hercules emulator. Funny how my personal mainframe has an "Apple" on it, and is 17" in size, ay? :) If not, I am curious how difficult it is to generate an entire z/distro from compiling it from source? I was told the source can be compiled via an easy script, but I can't imagine that is true for z/systems. I am planning on getting a new server for development and such, how hard would this be to create? -- Very Respectfully, Stuart, N3GWG
