Hi, Earlier in the evening today Ralph, Fabian and I had a chat about the present state of the language subsites. This email sort of summarises the main issue ( s/w ). We seem to have run into a slight technical hitch with punbb/fluxbb. They dont support LDAP as a backend. And we had decided a few months back that all new rollouts must have ldap backend so we can rollin CentOS-DS / openldap based backend. So we need to look at alternatives, and since the primary focus of these international sites is going be forums : Here is a shortlist ( if there is anything else that people are aware of, please add to this list ) - phpBB - SMF - Fudforum - phorum - fluxbb Requirements: - Must be able to scale ( couple of hundred thousand msgs ) - Must be able to handle ldap auth ( if it cant, whats involved in writing the ldap-auth portion ) - Must address the specific requirements raised by the present www.centos.org forum users ( Can you please fill this section in ? ) - Must support all languages we need ( pure utf8 support would be good ) - Secure - Skin'able Nice to have: - Capable of running multiple instances from a single deployment - responsive community :D Things we will need to do: - Decide on what s/w to use. - Give the ArtWork people enough time to get the look & feel sorted. - Migrate newbb forums from www.centos.org to $system ( hey, english is a language too :D ). - Migrate fr.centos.org into the final s/w - setup {de/es/ja/it/pt_br}.centos.org Actions: Ralph and Fabian are going to work on setting up a test ldap server, once that is online we will then start by installing into our test-vm-farm the various s/w to eval them. If anyone would like to help, please feel free to jump right in. Interested in IA64 build.

I noticed on the SIG that people interested in other ports of interest. I'd like to express interest in the IA64 port. What is the best way to get started? I have two SGI Itanium 2 based machines. One 64 processor x 64GB SGI Altix and a 32 processor x 32GB RAM SGI Prism. They are currently running CentOS 4.8 and I would love to be able to run CentOS 5.5 on them to get them into compliance with the rest of the cluster. -- James A. 'yum-security' plugin and fasttrack respository for CentOS 5.4

Yesterday evening (Tuesday December 8, 2009) a forum thread [1] was started by Stefan (under the ID of "gigglesworth") relating to the above subjects. As is well known, ELRepo provided the fasttrack packages during the lifetime of CentOS 5.3 but following on from Karanbir's assertion that CentOS will provide the fasttrack packages for 5.4 we, at ELRepo, have stepped down from providing that service. Will CentOS-devs please have a look at the above mentioned thread and then respond, accordingly, to the OP. Regards, Alan. DRBD again...

A while we discussed dropping the old drbd packages out of the repo. I have a two node cluster I rolled from the same ks file and built rpms from a supported version of drbd using their trivial and well documented method, so when I needed help, I could get it:) During a `yum update` on only "one" node, it wants to replace drbd.x86_64 8.3.7-1 with drbd82? Uh, ok... I don't have the genuine skill to manage packages for a repo of such importance like a CentOS repo, but an abandoned package is of equal harm. When a user installs those and then goes to the drbd list for help I suspect he would get the same reply if he installed CentOS 5.0 then encountered an issue and asked for help. Fair? The list of fixes from 8.2.x to current is long. Given the package building is so well done for drbd, by Linbit, does it make sense to duplicate their effort and simply make work for the maintainers of this repo? Thanks guys, jlc

Forum overhaul

Hello all, As an end user, I would like to know if there is any forward progress on doing something about the CentOS forums? This apparently has came up time and again, with various examples being given of the deficiencies of the existing setup (depending on your point of view). As near as I can tell the general consensus seems to be 'yes, something needs to be done'... and thats about as far as it gets. I realize everybody has lots on their plate, but this has been languishing for a year or more, with no apparent changes being made. disk i/o stalls with mptsas since upgrade to centos 5.4

Hi! On two different machines, I've been experiencing disk I/O stalls after upgrading to the CentOS 5.4 kernel. Both machines have an LSI 1068E MPT SAS (mptsas) controller connected to a Chenbro CK13601 36-port SAS expander, with one machine having 16 1T WD disks hooked up to it, and the other having a mix of about 20 WD/Seagate/Samsung/Hitachi 1T and 2T disks. When there's a disk I/O stall, all reads and writes to any disk behind the SAS controller/expander just hang for a while (typically for almost exactly eight seconds), so not just the I/O to one particular disk or a subset of the disks. The disks on other (on-board SATA) controllers still pass I/O requests when the SAS I/O stalls. I hacked up the attached (dirty) perl script to demonstrate this effect -- it will read /proc/diskstats in a tight loop, and keep track of which request entered the request queue when, and when it completed, and it will WTF if a request took more than a second. (The same thing can probably be done with blktrace, but I was lazy.) New requests get submitted, but the pending ones fail to complete for a while, and then they all complete at once. This happens on kernel-2.6.18-164.11.1.el5, while reverting to the latest CentOS 5.3 kernel (kernel-2.6.18-128.7.1.el5) makes the issue go away again, i.e. no more stalls. It doesn't seem to matter whether the I/O load is high or not -- the stalls happen even under almost no load at all. Before I dig into this further, has anyone experienced anything similar? CentOS 5 PowerPC port?

Hi all, I'm trying to get a CentOS 5 port started for PowerPC. I saw there was some email back in February about this, but did not know what progress had been made. Does anyone have any news? I'm most interested in 32-bit, with the hope of eventually running it on some Apple (G4 and G5) desktops, as well as on some embedded PowerPC boards (mostly amcc 460ex based). So I'd be hoping to build with some pretty generic target options so the RPMs would be useful in the most places. Are there tools, scripts or techniques used to do the x86 RPMs build that could be leveraged? I looked around on the CentOS website and wiki, but could not find docs or sources for this. Any pointers on this, or just generally how the x86 build/build server is bootstrapped, and the x86 RPMs are produced, would be greatly appreciated. Given my previous somewhat painful experience with autoconf-related cross-build issues, my first thought was to build the bulk of the RPMs natively on PowerPC, rather than x86 to PowerPC cross-build. I have a few PowerPC boxes (currently running Fedora 12), including a quad core 2.5GHz G5, that I'd be happy to share with others interested in getting a CentOS PowerPC port done. I'd be grateful for any tips, help or direction. Thanks, Greg

Why are Spacewalk packages removed from CentOS?

Dear all, After filing a bug (http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=4315) Karan made me aware of a discussion held in January 2010. There was no conclusion, no decision. The origin was from Miroslav he was requesting to include rhnlib and friends as I made is on the bug report, and I totally agree with him. Companies have (more or less) large test-environments with CentOS. For those companies it would be a great benefit to have those packages in stock CentOS. Benefits for my self: My daily work is with RHEL and RHN Satellite. In meanwhile I have quite a good to excellent knowledge of RHN sat and its future (I'm a git reader). This is mainly due to the existence of spacewalk. At the moment implementing a complete testbed consisting of CentOS AND spacewalk means quite a lot of work, due to to missing rhnlibs and friends in CentOS. Conclusion: With a very small patch as Miroslav suggested to avoid bothering rhn.redhat.com we can have a OS with is attracting to more people. Talk about existing forums

hi guys, One of the things that came up from the last chat about the language specific websites, was that there was no one on that call who actually used the forums. With the help of Akemi, I've been able to setup a meeting for the existing english forum moderators to come together and have a chat about: 1) what we have right now 2) Whats broken 3) whats really good 4) where they would like the forums to be in the next 6 months 5) Where they would like the forums to be in the next 12 months 6) The idea of 'English' as being just another language Its a bit short notice, but the meeting is setup to happen on Wednesday 9th Dec at 2300 UTC. Its the only time that worked for all concerned - in the next few weeks period. Apart from the existing forum moderators, anyone interested in the conversation is more than welcome to come along. Lets all sync up at 22:50 on #centos-devel(a)irc.freenode.net and take it from there. Also, lets try and timebox initial discussion to 40 min with a further 10 min after that to summarise and plan future actions. - KB

Regarding the recent forum post of the dvd not fitting 4.7gigs, is it possible to combine or are there changes to anaconda that will not permit this easily? jlc
