forums + portal for {lang}.centos.org sites

Hi, Earlier in the evening today Ralph, Fabian and I had a chat about the present state of the language subsites. This email sort of summarises the main issue ( s/w ). We seem to have run into a slight technical hitch with punbb/fluxbb. They dont support LDAP as a backend. And we had decided a few months back that all new rollouts must have ldap backend so we can rollin CentOS-DS / openldap based backend. So we need to look at alternatives, and since the primary focus of these international sites is going be forums : Here is a shortlist ( if there is anything else that people are aware of, please add to this list ) - phpBB - SMF - Fudforum - phorum - fluxbb Requirements: - Must be able to scale ( couple of hundred thousand msgs ) - Must be able to handle ldap auth ( if it cant, whats involved in writing the ldap-auth portion ) - Must address the specific requirements raised by the present www.centos.org forum users ( Can you please fill this section in ? ) - Must support all languages we need ( pure utf8 support would be good ) - Secure - Skin'able Nice to have: - Capable of running multiple instances from a single deployment - responsive community :D Things we will need to do: - Decide on what s/w to use. - Give the ArtWork people enough time to get the look & feel sorted. - Migrate newbb forums from www.centos.org to $system ( hey, english is a language too :D ). - Migrate fr.centos.org into the final s/w - setup {de/es/ja/it/pt_br}.centos.org Actions: Ralph and Fabian are going to work on setting up a test ldap server, once that is online we will then start by installing into our test-vm-farm the various s/w to eval them. If anyone would like to help, please feel free to jump right in. FreeIPA functional testing

Hi all, The initial commit I made (not carried out pull request just yet) does the following: * Installs IPA packages * Does automated basic configuration of server * Verifies kerberos tickets being issued for host/admin user * Tests adding a user (and checks that the initial password is expired plus the change) In the next few days I'm intending to add: * Test adding a service and getting a keytab and certificate for that service * Test adding a host * Test adding DNS zone and records * Test reloading bind (regression test for RHBA-2013-0739) * Test sudo rules configured via IPA * Test deleting all the stuff added above After that I'll issue the pull request... Next stage subsequent to the server tests working would be client side to tests registration against the IPA server itself... Is there anything else that anyone can think of that would be useful to have in the IPA test suite? Cheers, James

Kernel bug fix that restores SSD performance -- testing sought

According to this bug report: http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=6548 (originally from http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=642729 ) a patch introduced in kernel 2.6.32 causes a performance drop in [certain] SSDs. This patch was later reverted in the mainline kernel. With this kernel, the reporter says, the SSD performance is now what is expected from the spec. I have built a centosplus kernel that has the referenced patch reverted. My limited test (using hdparm) did show some improvement with this kernel. kernel-ml from ELRepo (currently at 3.10.0-1.el6) gave a number similar to this plus kernel. http://people.centos.org/toracat/kernel/6/plus/bug6548/ Please test if you can and report back with your findings (good, bad, no diff ...). Hi, ci.dev.centos.org: - run through pending merges ( tigalch / athmane ) - do the reimzul integration ( kb ) - nightly tests, esure they are robust enough to rely on --- tests already running nightly --- monitor for another 2 weeks, then look at flaky / shallow tests --- promote publicly, make noise around it - ensure tests are running with latest kernel, reboot needed, this is already being done ( tigalch ) - ensure backups in place for everything ( kb / athmane ) - get a private git repo for puppet / opennebula content ( kb ) Website: - migrate the site to a more reliable host, with more resources while we wait for the new design work to complete ( kb ) - setup a blog / story interface - test-migrate the forums to phpbb ( TrevorH1 / KB ) --- ensure a bunch of people have access to play with the entire forums content, migrated - not just 1 forum as we had done in the past --- write a url redictor from old-url to new-url ( kb ) VIP Program - use name 'Friends' represented as 'Friends of CentOS' - centos.org/Friends and centos.org/Friends/<person> urls for aggregated and person specific content - domain to be used for email / contact TBD ( but not .centos.org ) - Bootstrap resources on Google's compute engine ( pending physical hardware allocation from .centos.org pool ) ( Phibs / Tigalch ) Dojos: - keep them coming --- Bucharest + Madrid + Edinburgh confirmed --- Houston most likely ( but not confirmed ) The next CentOS Syncup is scheduled for 31st July 16:00 UTC in #centos-devel, if there is anything you want to bring up : either as something you want to do, or something you think needs to be done ( even if you are unable to actually do it ) then please come along and raise the issue. weekly syncup

hi, In conversation with Christoph earlier today, the idea came up that we should have a weekly public syncup in #centos-devel and try to round up all ( or as many ) lose ends as possible. Given that we now have a large enough contributor base, it might be good to have a project wide ( even if in sections ) backlog, that others can jump in with as well. This would be stuff like forum-migration updates, artwork updates and various things around the project. A summary of this would then be a nice-to-post into a centos.org/whatsup blog. With that in mind, I'm going to propose Wednesday's at 16:00 UTC in #centos-devel @ irc.freenode.net : Timebox'ed to 60 min, and only open to agenda items submitted atleast 2 hrs in advance. I will take on the task of running these meetings, till such time as someome else comes along and fights me for it. kernel upgrade for AVX support

Hi, I've a CentOS-5.8 Linux installed on a server which has the Intel Xeon Sandy bridge 8 core, dual socket processor. As Sandybridge has AVX feature and can do 8 flops. But we're not able to take performance boost of AVX , as this feature not supported on CentOS-5.8. Is it possible to get AVX working, by just installing the CentOS-6.0 or 6.2 kernel on existing CentOS-5.8 OS, instead of doing re-installation with CentOS-6.2? We're even ready for compiling kernel source. Let us know what you suggest on this. Thanks in advance

Missing bind-dyndb-ldap update

Hi guys, Been troubleshooting an issue with IPA here and the freeipa guys pointed out a fix in bind-dyndb-ldap-2.3-2.el6_4.1 back in April. http://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHBA-2013-0739.html https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=928429 Checking the repos it looks like the updated package is missing since only bind-dyndb-ldap-2.3-2.el6 is present in /os/ with no package in /updates/ Could someone please take a look and see why the package hasn't been rebuilt?
