I'll admit to being not very surprised - I was counting on our recent changes toward a more open contributor project to make up for not having been able to do a lot of preparation for the application. Storage SIG proposal

Greetings CentOS-devel, We here at Inktank (and the Ceph project) are quite interested in the direction that CentOS is headed and would love to propose a 'Storage SIG' to help ensure that something so fundamental gets the proper attention. There are definitely aspects that will overlap with Core, Cloud, and Virtualization, but we think there are plenty of places where storage should have it's own discourse. We are already building CentOS packages for Ceph and would like to encourage other storage offerings to do the same. We are definitely in alignment with the requirements and want to ensure that: 1) the discourse remains primarily CentOS related, or at least tangentially applicable. 2) there is plenty of feedback and control into, and out of, the core CentOS community. 3) all communications take place in public (either IRC or mailing lists). 4) all code is compatible with a FOSS license (in our case, LGPL v2 w/ fragmented copyright). 5) all documentation is compatible with the CentOS wiki license. 6) the storage SIG would be very mindful of CentOS direction and coordinate effectively. 7) we have the appropriate buy-in from the CentOS devteam. For a (very rough) outline of form and function I was thinking of the following. However, this will obviously grow and mature with feedback. Mission To ensure that CentOS is at the forefront of next generation storage technology and has a wide range of mature options for both traditional and distributed systems. Technical Goals * Assist with packaging and testing of storage technologies for CentOS repositories * Documenting paths to deployment and use for various storage technologies * Hold an open discourse around storage technology as it applies to CentOS * Work closely with providers of storage technology to ensure tight integration with CentOS Community Goals * Provide an easy-to-consume menu of storage and deployment/orchestration options * Act as a resource for those exploring next generation storage technology * Ensure that all storage technology is addressed equally without favoritism * Work with users to publish use cases and real-world examples for review I welcome any and all feedback and look forward to working with the CentOS community. eventfd to select problem between Intel and AMD

Hi I met a strange problem, I wrote a simple program that create some eventfds and add it to select loop, create a thread to write some bytes to a random eventfd, when i run 100 instances on a Intel E5-2650, mpstat shows that we have 95% idle of CPU, but when i run same 100 instances on a AMD Opteron(TM) Processor 6272, mpstat shows 50% on sys, 50% idle. Kernel version is Linux 2.6.32-279.el6. The attachment is the source code of my test program. Can someone give any suggestion?? /opt/rh is a directory and not a symbolic link when installing devtoolset

I just installed devtoolset-1.1-gcc-c++ and devtoolset-1.1-gcc-plugin-devel on a clean install and after doing so /opt/rh was a directory and not a symbolic link to /opt/centos. It was an easy fix, but is there something I can do to help diagnose the cause of the issue so it won't bite other people? Thanks, Dave

CentOS Dojo / Hackathon for Cloud Images

hi, On the 31st Jan, we hosted a CentOS Cloud Instance hackathon at the CentOS Dojo @ IBM Forum, brussels. We had contributions from the redhat openstack team, the cloudstack people, hpcloud, opennebula and the xen crew. Apart from getting the base images done for these, we also had a few docker images built, xen-pv and xen=hvm images for xen4centos and as a final bonus towards the end of the day, I was able to update tooling to build all of the above against the rhel7beta tree ( the actual instance building work was all being done against centos-6/x86_64 only ). All in all, I closed the day with 84 attempts ( of which 57 were successful ). During the hack session, everyone was targetting, as had been planned really - a common cloud-init package. Before I start pushing the content up publicly and upload the images done in the session, it would be good to have the conversation around cloud-init. Are we going to keep consuming it from EPEL ? which is hard and tricky, or are we going to pull it into a centos.org repo ( Extras/ seems like a good target, for base common stuff ). And if we do pull it in, how are we going to keep in sync with EPEL ( and maybe other repos ) so we dont end up ver-rel thrashing at updates time. For the sake of completeness, the AWS images for 6.5 I've pushed yesterday ( Wed 5th ) are as the 6.4 ones ( i.e. no cloud-init ). Xen/Xen4CentOS SIG

Hi all, congratulations on the RedHat/CentOS announcement. Sorry for responding so late on SIGs: I was in China until recently and had no time to follow up. There is definitely interest to continue the Xen (or Xen4CentOS) SIG within CentOS, building on the Xen4CentOS work of last year. I want to get the endorsement of the Xen Project Advisory Board for joining the SIG at next Tuesday's board meeting. This will give an application (if needed) extra weight. I don't expect any issues. The other question I have is whether we do need to re-apply (http://wiki.centos.org/SpecialInterestGroup lists Xen4CentOS as a SIG already) and what the format for an application would be other than posting to this list. Maybe we ought to look at the naming of the SIG and make it more generic to cover for future version changes in Xen as well as targeting CentOS versions beyond CentOS 7 (which ought to be a lot easier than CentOS 6 because we only need Xen and no custom kernel). Also, there would probably be practical issues on list naming, etc. (Xen4CentOS is merged with CentOS-virt from a list perspective). I don't have an issue with the status quo, but it may be cleaner for CentOS in the long run if there was a clear SIG to list mapping. Best Regards Lars
