ksplice and CentOS

hi guys, lots of people on this list are keen on contributing to the CentOS effort - and one place where we could, as a group of people, make a massive difference is being able to deliver a ksplice upgrade model. A couple of people have started in silo's to try and get something together but I feel it might be a good time to try and see if we can do somethng as a group. Do we have people on the list who find the idea of rebootless kernel upgrades interesting ? Is there some desire to try and make that happen within the CentOS Ecosystem ? - KB

anaconda dependency calculation?

Hi all, I'm trying to find a tool that calculates all dependencies for a specific package or group of packages for use with CentOS 5 (beta) with the intention of putting together a custom single CD build of CentOS 5. With CentOS 4 i used a python script that used the hdrlist module to find all dependencies which borrowed code from a number of sources. I've looked at yumdownloader and how it checks dependencies (using the --resolve option) but if i pass it the list of packages defined in say the Base and the Core yum groups which generally form an absolute minimal install i end up with about 200 packages. If i do a custom install (using beta 1 disks) and deselect everything i end up with over 300 packages. So i'm guessing anaconda calculates dependencies in a slightly different way, can anyone point me to files/code where i should be looking to find out? forums + portal for {lang}.centos.org sites

Hi, Earlier in the evening today Ralph, Fabian and I had a chat about the present state of the language subsites. This email sort of summarises the main issue ( s/w ). We seem to have run into a slight technical hitch with punbb/fluxbb. They dont support LDAP as a backend. And we had decided a few months back that all new rollouts must have ldap backend so we can rollin CentOS-DS / openldap based backend. So we need to look at alternatives, and since the primary focus of these international sites is going be forums : Here is a shortlist ( if there is anything else that people are aware of, please add to this list ) - phpBB - SMF - Fudforum - phorum - fluxbb Requirements: - Must be able to scale ( couple of hundred thousand msgs ) - Must be able to handle ldap auth ( if it cant, whats involved in writing the ldap-auth portion ) - Must address the specific requirements raised by the present www.centos.org forum users ( Can you please fill this section in ? ) - Must support all languages we need ( pure utf8 support would be good ) - Secure - Skin'able Nice to have: - Capable of running multiple instances from a single deployment - responsive community :D Things we will need to do: - Decide on what s/w to use. - Give the ArtWork people enough time to get the look & feel sorted. - Migrate newbb forums from www.centos.org to $system ( hey, english is a language too :D ). - Migrate fr.centos.org into the final s/w - setup {de/es/ja/it/pt_br}.centos.org Actions: Ralph and Fabian are going to work on setting up a test ldap server, once that is online we will then start by installing into our test-vm-farm the various s/w to eval them. If anyone would like to help, please feel free to jump right in. A project calendar

Hi There is quite a lot of stuff going on and not all of it is easily visible to everyone. The way to perhaps address that is to setup a project calendar that people can sync against and look at regularly. And more win if we can have it slightly open ended, allowing people / projects / sig's to contribute events into that cal. To that extent Stephen Smoogen introduced me to Pierre-Yves Chibo who runs the fedocal effort, and they have graciously agreed to set something up for CentOS as well. Stephen I know is on this list already, I've requested Pierre to join ( he might have done so already ). Firstly looking for comments on the idea / plan - and then for options on implemention, publishing and consumption of the calendar. RFC: Alternative Desktop SIG

I would like to put together an alternative desktop sig which will build, qa, and support desktops which are not the Enterprise Linux primary or secondary desktops (GNOME and KDE). There are a couple of ground rules I would like to propose: 1) Any desktop system needs to have 3 sponsors who are people willing to do the work of building RPMS, coordinating user bugs with upstream, and fixing packages. The reason for 3 is a) that this SIG isn't a dumping ground for here is ABC-DE compiled, goodbye. b) that disagreements between sponsors should be deadlock free. c) that when people take vacations, etc there is continuity of operation. 2) Desktops do not keep to Enterprise lifetimes, but major version changes to the desktop need to be announced, tested and released to a schedule. Desktops which don't want to do that will not be part of the SIG. [A schedule does not need to be super detailed, but just alleviate surprise.] 3) Desktops can and will be removed from the SIG if there isn't an interest in keeping them up. This is mainly to cover that if ABC-DE desktop no longer has sponsors, other members of the SIG aren't obliged to support ABC-DE if they don't want to. 4) Some level of governance needs to be established so that there is a committee that can make sure that a desktop has 'sponsors', that it is not just code thrown over a wall and left, and that users are not left surprised when updates to the desktop occur. They may also make up packaging rules and guidelines as needed to alleviate problems that come up. As this is an RFC, these are just proposed rules to be solidified when the CentOS board considers the SIG. -- Stephen J Smoogen.

OpenNebula Variant and Cloud SIG proposals

Apologies, I sent this to KB's direct mailbox earlier today and apparently I didn't send it to centos-devel. So I'm forwarding it now. Given that there are at least two other projects keen to make this happen, it would be great if the Cloud SIG could be a single multicloud target. -- Hello, I'm Jaime Melis from the OpenNebula project [1]. We have been involved with CentOS for the past year making a stable Cloud Management Platform [2]. I would like to hereby propose a new CentOS variant, namely the OpenNebula variant. This variant would add three roles to the CentOS installation: * OpenNebula Frontend * OpenNebula Node KVM * OpenNebula Node Xen The work for the Frontend and Node KVM roles has been completed and is ready to be released. The Node Xen role is still in progress although close to being finished. This work should take place under the Cloud SIG umbrella, which right as of now doesn't exist, so I would like to also propose the creation of this group with the aim of making the major cloud platforms work wth Centos. Official docker images and updates

To consolidate the docker effort moving around the -devel list [1][2], I've been talking with the docker folks about taking over the 'official' CentOS images they have in place, and transferring the responsibility to the cloud sig. Currently Chris StPierre and Adam Miller have been helping to do the work and get us in contact with the right people. As it stands right now, the docker folks use stackbrew[3] to generate their images, jam the resulting image tarball into git, and submit a pull request when updates are required. As long as the image can be imported into docker, they don't seem to have a problem with the way we're currently[4] doing things The recent openssl bug has gotten them a bit more hurried to transition the responsibility back to us. Immediate requirements: - An updated docker image, built from the most recent updates so that the openssl fix is in place. Short term requirements: - A brief description of the centos image, with url for more information - Wiki page documenting the basics of the docker image, how it's created, and how to use it. Long term requirements: - Update plan for for keeping the docker image updated, along with 'emergency roll-out plan' for critical updates. - established policy for docker and other cloud images.
