Hi, Earlier in the evening today Ralph, Fabian and I had a chat about the present state of the language subsites. This email sort of summarises the main issue ( s/w ). We seem to have run into a slight technical hitch with punbb/fluxbb. They dont support LDAP as a backend. And we had decided a few months back that all new rollouts must have ldap backend so we can rollin CentOS-DS / openldap based backend. So we need to look at alternatives, and since the primary focus of these international sites is going be forums : Here is a shortlist ( if there is anything else that people are aware of, please add to this list ) - phpBB - SMF - Fudforum - phorum - fluxbb Requirements: - Must be able to scale ( couple of hundred thousand msgs ) - Must be able to handle ldap auth ( if it cant, whats involved in writing the ldap-auth portion ) - Must address the specific requirements raised by the present www.centos.org forum users ( Can you please fill this section in ? ) - Must support all languages we need ( pure utf8 support would be good ) - Secure - Skin'able Nice to have: - Capable of running multiple instances from a single deployment - responsive community :D Things we will need to do: - Decide on what s/w to use. - Give the ArtWork people enough time to get the look & feel sorted. - Migrate newbb forums from www.centos.org to $system ( hey, english is a language too :D ). - Migrate fr.centos.org into the final s/w - setup {de/es/ja/it/pt_br}.centos.org Actions: Ralph and Fabian are going to work on setting up a test ldap server, once that is online we will then start by installing into our test-vm-farm the various s/w to eval them. If anyone would like to help, please feel free to jump right in. A project calendar

Hi There is quite a lot of stuff going on and not all of it is easily visible to everyone. The way to perhaps address that is to setup a project calendar that people can sync against and look at regularly. And more win if we can have it slightly open ended, allowing people / projects / sig's to contribute events into that cal. To that extent Stephen Smoogen introduced me to Pierre-Yves Chibo who runs the fedocal effort, and they have graciously agreed to set something up for CentOS as well. Stephen I know is on this list already, I've requested Pierre to join ( he might have done so already ). Firstly looking for comments on the idea / plan - and then for options on implemention, publishing and consumption of the calendar. RFC: Alternative Desktop SIG

I would like to put together an alternative desktop sig which will build, qa, and support desktops which are not the Enterprise Linux primary or secondary desktops (GNOME and KDE). There are a couple of ground rules I would like to propose: 1) Any desktop system needs to have 3 sponsors who are people willing to do the work of building RPMS, coordinating user bugs with upstream, and fixing packages. The reason for 3 is a) that this SIG isn't a dumping ground for here is ABC-DE compiled, goodbye. b) that disagreements between sponsors should be deadlock free. c) that when people take vacations, etc there is continuity of operation. 2) Desktops do not keep to Enterprise lifetimes, but major version changes to the desktop need to be announced, tested and released to a schedule. Desktops which don't want to do that will not be part of the SIG. [A schedule does not need to be super detailed, but just alleviate surprise.] 3) Desktops can and will be removed from the SIG if there isn't an interest in keeping them up. This is mainly to cover that if ABC-DE desktop no longer has sponsors, other members of the SIG aren't obliged to support ABC-DE if they don't want to. 4) Some level of governance needs to be established so that there is a committee that can make sure that a desktop has 'sponsors', that it is not just code thrown over a wall and left, and that users are not left surprised when updates to the desktop occur. They may also make up packaging rules and guidelines as needed to alleviate problems that come up. As this is an RFC, these are just proposed rules to be solidified when the CentOS board considers the SIG. -- Stephen J Smoogen.

OpenNebula Variant and Cloud SIG proposals

Given that there are at least two other projects keen to make this happen, it would be great if the Cloud SIG could be a single multicloud target. -- Hello, I'm Jaime Melis from the OpenNebula project [1]. We have been involved with CentOS for the past year making a stable Cloud Management Platform [2]. I would like to hereby propose a new CentOS variant, namely the OpenNebula variant. This variant would add three roles to the CentOS installation: * OpenNebula Frontend * OpenNebula Node KVM * OpenNebula Node Xen The work for the Frontend and Node KVM roles has been completed and is ready to be released. The Node Xen role is still in progress although close to being finished. This work should take place under the Cloud SIG umbrella, which right as of now doesn't exist, so I would like to also propose the creation of this group with the aim of making the major cloud platforms work wth Centos. Official docker images and updates

To consolidate the docker effort moving around the -devel list [1][2], I've been talking with the docker folks about taking over the 'official' CentOS images they have in place, and transferring the responsibility to the cloud sig. Currently Chris StPierre and Adam Miller have been helping to do the work and get us in contact with the right people. As it stands right now, the docker folks use stackbrew[3] to generate their images, jam the resulting image tarball into git, and submit a pull request when updates are required. As long as the image can be imported into docker, they don't seem to have a problem with the way we're currently[4] doing things The recent openssl bug has gotten them a bit more hurried to transition the responsibility back to us. Immediate requirements: - An updated docker image, built from the most recent updates so that the openssl fix is in place. Short term requirements: - A brief description of the centos image, with url for more information - Wiki page documenting the basics of the docker image, how it's created, and how to use it. Long term requirements: - Update plan for for keeping the docker image updated, along with 'emergency roll-out plan' for critical updates. - established policy for docker and other cloud images. Thoughts? c7.00.00 build reports

hi for those of you who are tracking the build-reports, the c7.00.00 build running at the moment is just a scratch-build, to try and scope up the issues we are likely to hit in the i386/x86_64 build splits and to quantify exactly what part of i386 we need to owl as a bare minimal. its running on a single builder node, and were not running the powerpc / arm builds in parallel ( yet ). github mirrors and subgroups

hi, Working on getting some of the git.c.o stuff into place, and we came up against an interesting problem - in a single organisation on github, one cant have sub groups or sub directories. So if we intend to run a complete set of git mirrors from git.c.o on github.c then were going to have a single listing of a few thousand repos. It is possible to setup teams, that are then visible as github.com/orgs/CentOS/teams/virtsig etc - and one can see just the repos that team is responsible for - but might there be a more elegant solution ? one potential solution is to have github.com/CentOS as the parent organisation, and setup CentOS-SIG-Virt etc as completely different organisations, with teams that are able to completely admin that namespace ( maybe CentOS-SIGVirt or something shorter ). I've had a few conversations with the folks over at github and there doesnt seem to be any other obvious workaround to this. Request for epel-release package in CentOS repo

Hello, With the changes in CentOS, would it be possible now to include the epel-release package in the main CentOS repositories? I believe this would help make the process of setting CentOS up a bit more convenient and accessible for both new users (who may have an awkward time finding and installing the epel release package) as well as more veteran administrators, who could effectively choose to enable epel by default by including it in kickstarts and so on. Secure Boot in RHEL7beta

RHEL 7 beta can be installed on systems with 'Secure Boot' enabled as seen in the Installation Guide [1]. Is it a bug that.Xauthority-c or .Xauthority-l was generated to lock authentication?

Hi, I am running CentOS 6.4. Occasionally, some new created user account encountered authentication problems where .Xauthority-c or .Xauthority-l was generated to lock the authentication. I would think it is a bug, but please correct me if the .Xauthority-c or .Xauthority-l is some kind symptoms to indicate something wrong in my system. Thank you. Kind regards, jupiter

system call msgrcv() freom 32-bit application shows error: msgrcv: No message of desired type

The latest RHEL7 still shows the error msgrcv: No message of desired type if msgrcv() is called with negative arguments within 32-bit applications. It is in Red Hat Bugzilla – Bug 1042807 but as we dont have RHN Support anymore we cant take a ticket there. I have tested the kernel-lt-3.10.37-1.el6.elrepo.x86_64 and kernel-ml-3.14.1-1.el6.elrepo.x86_64 on CentOS-6 and the 3.10.37 still show the problem, while its fixed in 3.14 The fix is very small ( see attachment ), but I dont know what is the best way to get it fixed in the 3.10 kernels too. -- Kind Regards Gabriella Schmidt -- NMR Software -- Bruker BioSpin GmbH

ostree as a delivery model

The Fedora cloud sig has been talking about using the gnome ostre to deliver a potential platform, i think this is fantastic and leads in quite nicely to the conversations we've all been having about a minimial manageable image ( either for virt or cloud usage, or even baremetal ). I wonder if we can make this work for CentOS-6 now and 7 when its around ? the rpm-ostree stack seems to have a systemd dep though. snd_hda_intel module tweaking

Long story short... I'm recompiling the snd_hda_intel module to enable CONFIG_SND_HDA_RECONFIG. This will allow me to reset the pins on the card to get my sound working. (This option is already set in arch and ubuntu - where I can reprogram my pins and get sound working). I followed the 2 CentOS wikis pertaining to getting the full kernel sources and compiling a module... all seemed to go perfect. Unfortunately, when I try to load the new snd_hda_intel.ko module, I get the following: FATAL: Error inserting snd_hda_intel (/lib/modules/2.6.32-431.11.2.el6.x86_64/extra/snd-hda-intel.ko): Invalid module format A little googling suggested I run 'file' on the two modules and here is the output: /lib/modules/2.6.32-431.11.2.el6.x86_64/extra/snd-hda-intel.ko: ELF 64-bit LSB relocatable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), not stripped /lib/modules/2.6.32-431.11.2.el6.x86_64/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd-hda-intel.ko: ELF 64-bit LSB relocatable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), not stripped They seem identical? Any suggestions where I could go from here? I'm currently recompiling the entire kernel and will just copy over the new modules and see if something better happens. Thanks, Chris

I'm trying to build ODB on RHEL 5 32-bit and I get some linker errors. centos variant ?

Some time ago, I created a simple cluster configuration kit based on CENTOS. http://gridtoys.com/pvc/pvc.html The configuration kit is based on the use of a centos kickstart DVD and a simple shell script. Now I am reading some rather fuzzy definitions for CENTOS variants and am wondering if what I am doing with the cluster configuration kit is better suited as a CENTOS variant , or if it really fits the proposed definition of a variant at all? updating the official Docker image for CentOS

hi The Docker folks host an image for CentOS Linux 6 here : https://index.docker.io/_/centos/ - looking to upgrade this image, and to take ownership of that account ( for the CCIS ) I've built an image, which is in line with the existing image they host, but has been updated to include content released via mirror.centos.org to today. http://cloud.centos.org/centos/6/devel/CentOS-6-20140411-x86_64-docker_01.i… is the image please test worth noting that this is represented as CentOS-6, dropping the point release and replacing it with a date - means we can update it more frequently than only at every point release time ( and we set user expectation around that ). We can, if there is a need, still push images that are in line with a point release snapshot. Storage SIG Infrastructure Discussion

Hey all, Just wanted to keep people up on the latest discussions surrounding how we are planning to do the first pass of the Storage SIG repo setup. This is obviously still a pretty rough sketch as the CentOS infrastructure evolves to handle this use case, so if people have strong feelings please weigh in! Our current plan is to start with a development repository for the Storage SIG where we can initially import our packages. Once they are deemed "production" (still working on the mechanics of how/when to graduate) we will push them over to centos-extras. Centos-extras will be our "production" repository for now and will be a hard dependency for our devel repo so that when packages move no one gets orphaned. The execution of this is to start pushing src rpms to git.centos.org and github with the expectation that by the end of Apr or early May there will be a mirror in place between those two locations. Once the mirror is set up the hope is to use automatic triggers with Koji to trigger builds as new bits are pushed to the mirror. KB is working on docs for: 1) how to get builds going 2) how to join/administer the git repositories. Once those are in place we'll continue to tweak things until we have a smooth working model. I welcome any input or thoughts folks might have, especially from veteran rpm builders. Thanks! Virt SIG moving forward

Hi, just a quick note that I found the CentOS board meeting minutes which state that the Virt SIG is moving forward. We are going to have a first quick meeting on Friday the 11th, 11:00AM BST (London time) because many of us will be on the road the following weeks and we didn't want to stall progress. Please drop me a line if you want to participate on lars dot kurth at xenproject dot org. If you cannot make it, don't worry: we will set up a proper regular meeting once everyone is back from their travels and revisit agenda items as needed. It probably wont be very popular, but I'd propose a hangout or teleconf and will write up minutes.
