Hi, Earlier in the evening today Ralph, Fabian and I had a chat about the present state of the language subsites. This email sort of summarises the main issue ( s/w ). We seem to have run into a slight technical hitch with punbb/fluxbb. They dont support LDAP as a backend. And we had decided a few months back that all new rollouts must have ldap backend so we can rollin CentOS-DS / openldap based backend. So we need to look at alternatives, and since the primary focus of these international sites is going be forums : Here is a shortlist ( if there is anything else that people are aware of, please add to this list ) - phpBB - SMF - Fudforum - phorum - fluxbb Requirements: - Must be able to scale ( couple of hundred thousand msgs ) - Must be able to handle ldap auth ( if it cant, whats involved in writing the ldap-auth portion ) - Must address the specific requirements raised by the present www.centos.org forum users ( Can you please fill this section in ? ) - Must support all languages we need ( pure utf8 support would be good ) - Secure - Skin'able Nice to have: - Capable of running multiple instances from a single deployment - responsive community :D Things we will need to do: - Decide on what s/w to use. - Give the ArtWork people enough time to get the look & feel sorted. - Migrate newbb forums from www.centos.org to $system ( hey, english is a language too :D ). - Migrate fr.centos.org into the final s/w - setup {de/es/ja/it/pt_br}.centos.org Actions: Ralph and Fabian are going to work on setting up a test ldap server, once that is online we will then start by installing into our test-vm-farm the various s/w to eval them. If anyone would like to help, please feel free to jump right in. A project calendar

Hi There is quite a lot of stuff going on and not all of it is easily visible to everyone. The way to perhaps address that is to setup a project calendar that people can sync against and look at regularly. And more win if we can have it slightly open ended, allowing people / projects / sig's to contribute events into that cal. To that extent Stephen Smoogen introduced me to Pierre-Yves Chibo who runs the fedocal effort, and they have graciously agreed to set something up for CentOS as well. Stephen I know is on this list already, I've requested Pierre to join ( he might have done so already ). Firstly looking for comments on the idea / plan - and then for options on implemention, publishing and consumption of the calendar. cloud-init in CentOS

During the cloud instance SIG meeting today we talked about future plans for cloud-init in CentOS. Right now cloud-init is included as part of EPEL and that's where most CentOS users consume it from. The problem is that cloud-init and related bits are critical for building images to run on a public or private cloud, and we need to build early guest initialization tools into the cloud images we produce. Ideally this does not include adding EPEL or packages from EPEL which have not been rebuilt in our build systems. So, the proposal that there's general consensus upon within the SIG is to maintain cloud-init, its dependencies, and any related packages on git.centos.org and rebuild them ourselves. I'm one of the maintainers in EPEL so I offered to maintain the git repos for CentOS, anyone else who would like to be involved in more than welcome to step up. Thoughts, questions, concerns? -s

RFC: Alternative Desktop SIG

I would like to put together an alternative desktop sig which will build, qa, and support desktops which are not the Enterprise Linux primary or secondary desktops (GNOME and KDE). There are a couple of ground rules I would like to propose: 1) Any desktop system needs to have 3 sponsors who are people willing to do the work of building RPMS, coordinating user bugs with upstream, and fixing packages. The reason for 3 is a) that this SIG isn't a dumping ground for here is ABC-DE compiled, goodbye. b) that disagreements between sponsors should be deadlock free. c) that when people take vacations, etc there is continuity of operation. 2) Desktops do not keep to Enterprise lifetimes, but major version changes to the desktop need to be announced, tested and released to a schedule. Desktops which don't want to do that will not be part of the SIG. [A schedule does not need to be super detailed, but just alleviate surprise.] 3) Desktops can and will be removed from the SIG if there isn't an interest in keeping them up. This is mainly to cover that if ABC-DE desktop no longer has sponsors, other members of the SIG aren't obliged to support ABC-DE if they don't want to. 4) Some level of governance needs to be established so that there is a committee that can make sure that a desktop has 'sponsors', that it is not just code thrown over a wall and left, and that users are not left surprised when updates to the desktop occur. They may also make up packaging rules and guidelines as needed to alleviate problems that come up. As this is an RFC, these are just proposed rules to be solidified when the CentOS board considers the SIG. -- Stephen J Smoogen.

centosplus kernel naming

As we gear up for the upcoming CentOS 7 release, we're tracking a few things for the CentOSPlus kernel as well. One of the proposals (via http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=6828 ) is that we change the current name of the centosplus kernel to be a bit more consistent with other kernel names. The proposed new name would look like 'kernel-plus' or 'kernel-centosplus'. This is in keeping with other kernel names such as 'kernel-ml', 'kernel-xen', 'kernel-lt' etc. And allows for /etc/sysconfig/kernel to be used to set the DEFAULTKERNEL as desired. This change would only be for CentOS 7. Thoughts, comments, questions, flames? Next Cloud Instance SIG meetup

The setup works to build docker images, HVM images and AMI's delivered via various fileformats ( tar, qcow2, vmdk, raw ); The intention is to iterate over this setup and eventually get to a point where this becomes, curated by the Cloud Instance SIG, the official CentOS image build and delivery mechanism. hi, this is following on from the last Cloud Instance SIG meeting - the idea that we should be doing image updates was proposed, but I dont believe we decided on a time frequency of these builds. We can potentially do nightly builds and push them to ci.dev.centos.org, so if people want to really get a nightly snapshot they can. However, for most production requirements it makes sense to have these builds refreshed on a pre-determined schedule. Should we then be doing these weekly ? monthly ? When there is a major security issue ? Who decides its big-enough-an-issue ? Docker problems with centos 6 image based on libselinux.

People are reporting problems in Fedora about using centos rhel6 images. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1098120 The problem is the libselinux in the centos image is reporting that SELinux is enabled to processes running within the container. Tools like useradd and groupadd to attempt to write to /proc/self/attr/* files in order to setup proper labeling for SELinux. Since /proc is now mounted read/only within the docker containers, the writes are denied and useradd/groupadd fail. I wrote the attached patch for RHEL6 libselinux to get RHEL6 images to work properly. Basically the patched libselinux will report to processes that SELinux is disabled if the selinux file system is not mounted or mounted read/only. The fixed version of libselinux is already in Fedora and RHEL7 versions of libselinux. Red Hat will be shipping this new version of libselinux in rhel6.6. But we will also ship it as part of our rhel6.5 Base Image. Privileged containers and systems with SELInux disabled do not have this issue, however systemd with SELinux in permissive mode or enforcing have the problem. In permissive mode the problem will continue, since it is not SELinux denying access to /proc. It is actually the fact that /proc is mounted Read/Only. Previous versions of docker did not mount the /proc file system as read/only It would be a good idea if someone could get a patched version of libselinux into the centos 6 docker image.

Small Business SIG suggestion

I'm trying to see if there's interest in a small business oriented SIG. There are already small business distros based on Centos, and perhaps those groups may also want to participate in a SIG. There are certain issues related to small office servers that I believe deserve to be addressed in a community setting. For instance: 1. Easy backup, archive, & offsite mirroring. - Something that is always problematic for every small business I know regardless of server technology. 2. Security issues specifically related to small business. 3. Smooth updating. Trying to make the transition from one major release to the next as easy as possible. 4. Plugable/scalable vertical market application architecture. For instance making the platform hospitable to vertical applications like accounting systems in which the end user doesn't have to spend weeks setting up hosting stacks. 5. Easy user account management, perms setup, etc. 6. Interoperability, easy scalability with cloud systems. For instance explore ideas like having cloud based file server backup that can also be used as live system in case of local failure. Just some ideas, but anyway if anybody's interested, please let me know. Thanks, Omar

OpenNebula Variant and Cloud SIG proposals

Given that there are at least two other projects keen to make this happen, it would be great if the Cloud SIG could be a single multicloud target. -- Hello, I'm Jaime Melis from the OpenNebula project [1]. We have been involved with CentOS for the past year making a stable Cloud Management Platform [2]. I would like to hereby propose a new CentOS variant, namely the OpenNebula variant. This variant would add three roles to the CentOS installation: * OpenNebula Frontend * OpenNebula Node KVM * OpenNebula Node Xen The work for the Frontend and Node KVM roles has been completed and is ready to be released. The Node Xen role is still in progress although close to being finished. This work should take place under the Cloud SIG umbrella, which right as of now doesn't exist, so I would like to also propose the creation of this group with the aim of making the major cloud platforms work wth Centos. The CentOS Security Response Team

Hi, As SIG's come up and move forward - we are going to need to have a better established, documented and process driven security response team. While we can, in a pinch, reach into and request some resources from the RedHat SRT, they are in no way bound to help or even be involved in the overall CentOS Ecosystem - and we should really setup our own group to handle these requests. In the past conversations we had thought of setting up a group of maybe 3 to 5 people, who can triage and communicate with the respective groups of people responsible for the code or infra in question. This would not only include centos resources, but also be the contact point for upstream security notices from projects associated with us. In this case, they would be the people managing security(a)centos.org - with that email address being the primary contact for projects in the SIG's upstream as well. Storage SIG Update

Hey all, Since things have been on the back burner a bit since the Inktank acquisition I wanted to refresh what's going on in the world of the Storage SIG. KB, Lala, and I met yesterday to discuss current status and as it turns out things are actually still moving along. Ultimately we have 3 major goals for the near-term: 1) Collect srpms for Ceph/Gluster to populate CentOS repo (complete) 2) Ensure Ceph/Gluster are installable from a single repo 3) Ensure Storage distro work w/ virt Ideally we would like to expand the storage considerations beyond Ceph/Gluster, so if anyone has storage tech that they would like to heap on to the pile we definitely want to make sure we're enabling as many things as possible. Perhaps the xtreemFS or mooseFS guys would care to participate? At the very least it would be good to get a non-red-hat member into the storage mix now. If anyone has questions or concerns please let me know. Once we have a workable setup I'll push that out again for some actual consumption. Thanks. Creating a CentOS-only package

In Fedora and EPEL we have the qpid-cpp package (which I spoke about in an email last week) for all supported version of Fedora and for EL7 (can't do EL5/6 for the reasons mentioned in that previous email). This week we discussed the idea of providing CentOS specific packages, starting with CentOS 7. In RHEL we have product packages, this would be something separate from what we would be doing as a product. What would be the process for doing something like this? -- Darryl L. Centos kernel upgrade

Is it possible to run a Centos 6.5's kernel on a Centos 5.10 installation? I have compiled a new kernel from kernel-2.6.32-431.17.1.el6.src.rpm. The kernel does not even boot on my Centos 5.10 box. Vanilla kernels from kernel.org work well. Is this about Red Hat kernel patches? Cheers, Mark

Official docker images and updates

To consolidate the docker effort moving around the -devel list [1][2], I've been talking with the docker folks about taking over the 'official' CentOS images they have in place, and transferring the responsibility to the cloud sig. Currently Chris StPierre and Adam Miller have been helping to do the work and get us in contact with the right people. As it stands right now, the docker folks use stackbrew[3] to generate their images, jam the resulting image tarball into git, and submit a pull request when updates are required. As long as the image can be imported into docker, they don't seem to have a problem with the way we're currently[4] doing things The recent openssl bug has gotten them a bit more hurried to transition the responsibility back to us. Immediate requirements: - An updated docker image, built from the most recent updates so that the openssl fix is in place. Short term requirements: - A brief description of the centos image, with url for more information - Wiki page documenting the basics of the docker image, how it's created, and how to use it. Long term requirements: - Update plan for for keeping the docker image updated, along with 'emergency roll-out plan' for critical updates. - established policy for docker and other cloud images. Providing newer versions of packages from base CentOS/RHEL

Here's the back story: Base RHEL 6 has Qpid 0.14, which is a very old release. Our team wants to make a more recent version, 0.26, available for projects such as Open Stack. They are adopting CentOS as a platform and would like to use 0.26, which includes AMQP 1.0 support. We can't package 0.26 for EPEL6 due to 0.14 being in the base. So it was suggested to me in IRC to come here and ask for guidance. We would like to make our newer packages available for CentOS 6. What's the right path to follow? -- Darryl L. c7.00.00 build reports

hi for those of you who are tracking the build-reports, the c7.00.00 build running at the moment is just a scratch-build, to try and scope up the issues we are likely to hit in the i386/x86_64 build splits and to quantify exactly what part of i386 we need to owl as a bare minimal. its running on a single builder node, and were not running the powerpc / arm builds in parallel ( yet ). Hosting SIG

I'm using this email as a step towards changing that. ;) Karanbir mentioned that the Hosting SIG[1] needed an owner and I'd like to take on that challenge I've worked with web/application hosting since 2002 from basic LAMP stacks to large-scale, highly orchestrated OpenStack-based virtualization environments. There are some nuances to the world of hosting that demands quite a few changes from a standard CentOS minimal installation. Some of my goals for the SIG would be: 1) How do we make it easier for system administrators to host applications using various development languages and server platforms? 2) How can we make configuration automation frameworks more effective and easier to use on CentOS in hosting environments? github mirrors and subgroups

hi, Working on getting some of the git.c.o stuff into place, and we came up against an interesting problem - in a single organisation on github, one cant have sub groups or sub directories. So if we intend to run a complete set of git mirrors from git.c.o on github.c then were going to have a single listing of a few thousand repos. It is possible to setup teams, that are then visible as github.com/orgs/CentOS/teams/virtsig etc - and one can see just the repos that team is responsible for - but might there be a more elegant solution ? one potential solution is to have github.com/CentOS as the parent organisation, and setup CentOS-SIG-Virt etc as completely different organisations, with teams that are able to completely admin that namespace ( maybe CentOS-SIGVirt or something shorter ). I've had a few conversations with the folks over at github and there doesnt seem to be any other obvious workaround to this. Request for epel-release package in CentOS repo

Hello, With the changes in CentOS, would it be possible now to include the epel-release package in the main CentOS repositories? I believe this would help make the process of setting CentOS up a bit more convenient and accessible for both new users (who may have an awkward time finding and installing the epel release package) as well as more veteran administrators, who could effectively choose to enable epel by default by including it in kickstarts and so on.
