hi guys, lots of people on this list are keen on contributing to the CentOS effort - and one place where we could, as a group of people, make a massive difference is being able to deliver a ksplice upgrade model. A couple of people have started in silo's to try and get something together but I feel it might be a good time to try and see if we can do somethng as a group. Do we have people on the list who find the idea of rebootless kernel upgrades interesting ? Is there some desire to try and make that happen within the CentOS Ecosystem ? - KB

anaconda dependency calculation?

Hi all, I'm trying to find a tool that calculates all dependencies for a specific package or group of packages for use with CentOS 5 (beta) with the intention of putting together a custom single CD build of CentOS 5. With CentOS 4 i used a python script that used the hdrlist module to find all dependencies which borrowed code from a number of sources. I've looked at yumdownloader and how it checks dependencies (using the --resolve option) but if i pass it the list of packages defined in say the Base and the Core yum groups which generally form an absolute minimal install i end up with about 200 packages. If i do a custom install (using beta 1 disks) and deselect everything i end up with over 300 packages. So i'm guessing anaconda calculates dependencies in a slightly different way, can anyone point me to files/code where i should be looking to find out? Hi, Earlier in the evening today Ralph, Fabian and I had a chat about the present state of the language subsites. This email sort of summarises the main issue ( s/w ). We seem to have run into a slight technical hitch with punbb/fluxbb. They dont support LDAP as a backend. And we had decided a few months back that all new rollouts must have ldap backend so we can rollin CentOS-DS / openldap based backend. So we need to look at alternatives, and since the primary focus of these international sites is going be forums : Here is a shortlist ( if there is anything else that people are aware of, please add to this list ) - phpBB - SMF - Fudforum - phorum - fluxbb Requirements: - Must be able to scale ( couple of hundred thousand msgs ) - Must be able to handle ldap auth ( if it cant, whats involved in writing the ldap-auth portion ) - Must address the specific requirements raised by the present www.centos.org forum users ( Can you please fill this section in ? ) - Must support all languages we need ( pure utf8 support would be good ) - Secure - Skin'able Nice to have: - Capable of running multiple instances from a single deployment - responsive community :D Things we will need to do: - Decide on what s/w to use. - Give the ArtWork people enough time to get the look & feel sorted. - Migrate newbb forums from www.centos.org to $system ( hey, english is a language too :D ). - Migrate fr.centos.org into the final s/w - setup {de/es/ja/it/pt_br}.centos.org Actions: Ralph and Fabian are going to work on setting up a test ldap server, once that is online we will then start by installing into our test-vm-farm the various s/w to eval them. A project calendar

Hi There is quite a lot of stuff going on and not all of it is easily visible to everyone. The way to perhaps address that is to setup a project calendar that people can sync against and look at regularly. And more win if we can have it slightly open ended, allowing people / projects / sig's to contribute events into that cal. To that extent Stephen Smoogen introduced me to Pierre-Yves Chibo who runs the fedocal effort, and they have graciously agreed to set something up for CentOS as well. Stephen I know is on this list already, I've requested Pierre to join ( he might have done so already ). Firstly looking for comments on the idea / plan - and then for options on implemention, publishing and consumption of the calendar. cloud-init in CentOS

During the cloud instance SIG meeting today we talked about future plans for cloud-init in CentOS. Right now cloud-init is included as part of EPEL and that's where most CentOS users consume it from. The problem is that cloud-init and related bits are critical for building images to run on a public or private cloud, and we need to build early guest initialization tools into the cloud images we produce. Ideally this does not include adding EPEL or packages from EPEL which have not been rebuilt in our build systems. So, the proposal that there's general consensus upon within the SIG is to maintain cloud-init, its dependencies, and any related packages on git.centos.org and rebuild them ourselves. I'm one of the maintainers in EPEL so I offered to maintain the git repos for CentOS, anyone else who would like to be involved in more than welcome to step up. Thoughts, questions, concerns? -s

Dear Johnny Hughes and others: I've spent the morning ereading thru the mailing list archives from June and July while my Centos 7 machine mock user ran a mock --init using the mock.cfg found in the 7.00.02 kernel folder. I have a server running C6 at this time that won't support 64 bit, it was built before Y2K believe it or not. I saw some reference to a git repository and the need to rebuild some packages. pending updates notification on login

Dear List, I would like to express interest in running CentOS7 & probably CentOS6 production servers on ppc64 architecture. With OpenPower we have access to PowerKVM and want to understand current progress around this. Ubuntu is found to be working as ppc64el. C6 to 7 upgrade tool testing & documentation

Hi I've created a Yum repo definition for the 6 to 7 upgrade tools, installed the tools, run the pre-upgrade assistant and can report back that the assistant ran OK. I guess I'll now wait for the preupgrade-assistant-contents-0.5.13-1.0.4 rpm that Manuel mentioned. Any ETA on that? Cheers, Bert

Importing CentOS-6 Sources into git.centos.org

Now that we have a working CentOS 7 tree and process for putting Red Hat Sources onto git.centos.org, we are going to start a process to figure out how to import CentOS-6 Sources onto git.centos.org as well. We will be starting with sources from 6.0 ISOs all the way through current CentOS-6+updates. We do not have a specific time line for this to happen, but we will be generating the SRPM lists (in order) that we will likely use to populate original RHEL SRPMs (for non modified packages) and the CentOS SRPMs (for modified packages), and the correct order to make it happen. We will be posting those lists for review/correction to both the CentOS QA IRC channel and this mailing list. We will also be upgrading to a new version of gitblit for git.centos.org before we actually roll in the CentOS-6 sources, though I will begin the list generation before we actually start the gitblit upgrade process. It's been almost 2 months since release, and almost every other major cloud provider, except the most popular one, has the image available to deploy in their environments. Hi, has anyone looked at the cloud-utils stack for Atomic ? at the moment were stuck with a 8gb disk image, I've got a patch that lets me change that on the build time side of things. But before i upstream it, I was going to try cloud-utils and that fails quite badly in a dynamic backing store setup like AWS. a snapshotted, delayed mirror

Hi, One of the corner case challenges that I have on the builders that do the chained instance, images, media builds is that they consume an internal mirror - but a generic mirror. i.e updates during the day can result in the images that are built later to end up with different content ( for the ones that consume the updates/ repo etc ) To work around this, I'm proposing running a mirror closer to the image-buildsys machine, that only updates at midnight UTC, and will represent the state of play on the calendar date before the timestamped images. eg. the CentOS-7-x86_64-Generic-2014_08_26.qcow2 image will contain updates upto and including all content released till the 25th midnight. Its likely easier to make this private. But is there value in having this be public ? its only going to be a single node ? Only built for us-east-1 at this point. Atomic ostree repo mirror

hi, Working on the final bits for getting a CentOS Atomic image done, and a key issue that we need to workout is where the ostree content is going to live. I had considered putting it on cloud.centos.org, but technically there is nothing that indicates Atomic / OSTree are cloud specific. Once we have mainstream traction the best place for hosting this would be on mirror.centos.org, with content in repo moving along with updates, as they are released. But at the moment, I'd say this was a testing release : plus the actual content for the Atomic image is likely to change quite a bit ( we might even end up with multiple Atomic builds for different sorts of roles etc ). With that in mind, should we put the repos on dev.centos.org for now ? is this worth creating an atomic.centos.org ? I'm not a big fan of creating more subdomains though. Docker test images for CentOS-5

I've been looking at creating a CentOS-5 docker image, and it's taking shape. Currently my largest concern with the image is that it requires selinux to be disabled on the host, as the image currently lacks a patch similar to what was required for CentOS-6 [1]. Anjuta On CentOs 7

Hi Guys, In a thread called "Development Tools" i've asked if someone managed to install anjuta on C7. Someone gave me a link of fedora rpm package, but it didn't work for me. I was so close to just drop C7 and install ubuntu for the development. Because who will struggle with the whole dependencies when you can just "apt-get install anjuta" on ubuntu ? But i wanted to challenge myself and install it manually. I did it - i know it's nothing for profis like you. I had to deal with a lot of dependencies. While compiling i figured out that some of gnome projects were broken Oo - i'v fixed the source code and tried again and again till i got Anjuta running on C7. Yaaay. I'll attach some screenshots. The only thing that doesn't work is the glade gui in anjuta. That's because i didn't pay attention to the warning that glade is not installed. but the glade3 is on the repository and you can edit the gui by launching glade3 separately. Do you guys plan to ship anjuta into the repository ? I would like to contribute to CentOS7. Just let me know how can i contribute to C7 and i would love to do that. In other words, i would love to get involve in some projects. P.S. as i am a student at the university i may have time only at weekend. P.S. flexlm management software

Hi all- I deal with flexlm a great deal and want to create better logging software for it that will keep track of what features are used by whom, when, over time periods, etc. The purpose would be to allow admins to track what features are actually being used and which are not. Plan to write it in perl on centos 6. Is this something that would be of use?

Feedback on centos 7 cloud image

Hi, I'm testing centos 7 latest cloud image on an openstack infrastructure, using three networks. I've noticed a couple of things: - cloud init is not setting hostname permanently on the instance. After reboot it is again named "localhost" - the first run of cloud init did not get any ip on eth0 (eth1 and eth2 configured fine). After rebooting eth0 was successfully configured. I suspect that Network Manager is interfering with cloud-init. I don't know if it's a requirement but seems to me that in cloud instances network is anyway configured with other means than Network Manager. Don't know it it's useful to ship it with the cloud image. performing some other tests, hope to get more feedback. thanks Gabriele.

Hello all, I know I'm a tad late to the game but I'd like to express my intent to join the CentOS Atomic SIG. I don't know the process here but thought I'd throw it out there that I'd like to join. I've been working on a number of packaging things out in the Fedora Atomic space as well as some efforts to package/rebuild for CentOS 7 (using EPEL7 build targets). adding a infra-type tag to mirrorlist

hi, As we build and produce an increasing number of images that people can directly consume, eg. AMI's or Vagrant or docker or openstack or opennebula images etc, I'm keen to add a mirrorlist tag to the url that allows us to better serve content into those areas. Specially since not all the images are built with exclusive centos linux distro content and in some cases, we might need to consider things like cloud-init and cloud-utils to be essentially base-os content for those roles. Hi all, I love the new design for the CentOS website, but I find the download page (www.centos.org/download) is lacking some content. Under the heading "Minimal Install Images", the link points to a 6.5 page. No mention of the 7.0 minimal image. Under the heading Older Versions, I think it should provide links to 6.5 and 5.10. Currently, there is only a link to the vault. Perhaps link to wiki.centos.org/Download instead, where all the download links are listed. Chris

Distribution Artwork and logos.

Recently we've had some requests from the community as to how they could contribute various pieces of design, artwork or wallpaper. In order to make it more convenient for such contributions, I've moved the legacy artwork git instance to https://git.centos.org/summary/sig-core!artwork-archive.git. This should be considered legacy and reference only. To facilitate new artwork contributions, I've created https://github.com/CentOS/Artwork which will be mirrored at https://git.centos.org/summary/sig-core!Artwork.git This will be the authoritative repository for logos, branding, design, etc. It will also allow contributors to submit pull requests for their contributions, such as backgrounds and other creative artwork. Right now, both these repositories are bare because we need to have a bit of a discussion around the layout within them. I don't claim to be an artist in any sense of the term, so I'm not going to dictate a structure that might impede the work from people who actually know what they're doing. The two possible layouts I have in mind are: 1. exploded directory structure for the various source tarballs related to distro artwork such as centos-logos. 2. NumaChip kernel config option

Since CentOS is heavily used on Numascale systems, it would be a great enabler to have CONFIG_NUMACHIP enabled in CentOS kernels. It has been enabled for some time in Ubuntu server kernels. Hi, I tried to match what is installed on a system with what is available at git.centos.org. for example ... scheduling some downtime for reimzul and git.c.o

hi, there are a string of updates backed up behind git.centos.org and the reimzul services. Things that we had in the pipeline from before when Seven came through, and then all the dev work and inside instance work that was done to make Seven go through :: lots of bandaid's in place. I'd like to schedule some downtime for services, so we can rebase out of some of this technical debt. towards that, I'd like to propose downtime from 09:00 UTC 20th Aug to 23:00 UTC on the 21st Aug; During this time, we'll need to more or less shutdown everything for some period of time. The actual outage will be much shorter, and I'll know once i've been able to run through the trial-dry-run, but folks should assume and plan for no services during the two days. C7 EC2 cloud image: Amazon Marketplace?

Hey Guys, I was just wondering if the strategy will be the same for C7 as it was for C6 with regards to using Amazon Marketplace or not. I think some arguments have been made in the past that using the Marketplace approach limits flexibility. Is it possible to adopt the same strategy that fedora uses [1] and not use the Amazon Marketplace approach? GCC 4.8 vs -fsanitize

I've been anxiously awaiting a system containing GCC 4.8.x so I could try the new -fsanitize=address and -fsanitize=thread tools on my project. imagine my dismay when I finally have time to try it on C7 and find that it rejects the -fsanitize option. It doesn't appear to have been enabled when the shipped GCC was built. :( Do I have any choices other than compiling my own GCC ?? don't use centos 7 as a developer workstation

Hi, May be it's not clear to everyone.. so this's just a quick notice to everyone. Don't use CentOS 7 as a developer workstation since currently there is not included any developer IDE. As eclipse was pulled out from the main distro and put into Red Hat Developer Toolset (which is imho a good idea not to use a 7 years old IDE). But Red Hat Developer Toolset is still not supported on rhel7 this means currently you have to install eclipse and all other packages from RHDT. Anyway RH said it will be supported... RFC: Alternative Desktop SIG

I would like to put together an alternative desktop sig which will build, qa, and support desktops which are not the Enterprise Linux primary or secondary desktops (GNOME and KDE). There are a couple of ground rules I would like to propose: 1) Any desktop system needs to have 3 sponsors who are people willing to do the work of building RPMS, coordinating user bugs with upstream, and fixing packages. The reason for 3 is a) that this SIG isn't a dumping ground for here is ABC-DE compiled, goodbye. b) that disagreements between sponsors should be deadlock free. c) that when people take vacations, etc there is continuity of operation. 2) Desktops do not keep to Enterprise lifetimes, but major version changes to the desktop need to be announced, tested and released to a schedule. Desktops which don't want to do that will not be part of the SIG. [A schedule does not need to be super detailed, but just alleviate surprise.] 3) Desktops can and will be removed from the SIG if there isn't an interest in keeping them up. This is mainly to cover that if ABC-DE desktop no longer has sponsors, other members of the SIG aren't obliged to support ABC-DE if they don't want to. 4) Some level of governance needs to be established so that there is a committee that can make sure that a desktop has 'sponsors', that it is not just code thrown over a wall and left, and that users are not left surprised when updates to the desktop occur. They may also make up packaging rules and guidelines as needed to alleviate problems that come up. As this is an RFC, these are just proposed rules to be solidified when the CentOS board considers the SIG. -- Stephen J Smoogen.
