hi guys, lots of people on this list are keen on contributing to the CentOS effort - and one place where we could, as a group of people, make a massive difference is being able to deliver a ksplice upgrade model. A couple of people have started in silo's to try and get something together but I feel it might be a good time to try and see if we can do somethng as a group. Do we have people on the list who find the idea of rebootless kernel upgrades interesting ? Is there some desire to try and make that happen within the CentOS Ecosystem ? - KB

anaconda dependency calculation?

Hi all, I'm trying to find a tool that calculates all dependencies for a specific package or group of packages for use with CentOS 5 (beta) with the intention of putting together a custom single CD build of CentOS 5. With CentOS 4 i used a python script that used the hdrlist module to find all dependencies which borrowed code from a number of sources. I've looked at yumdownloader and how it checks dependencies (using the --resolve option) but if i pass it the list of packages defined in say the Base and the Core yum groups which generally form an absolute minimal install i end up with about 200 packages. If i do a custom install (using beta 1 disks) and deselect everything i end up with over 300 packages. So i'm guessing anaconda calculates dependencies in a slightly different way, can anyone point me to files/code where i should be looking to find out? Hi, Earlier in the evening today Ralph, Fabian and I had a chat about the present state of the language subsites. This email sort of summarises the main issue ( s/w ). We seem to have run into a slight technical hitch with punbb/fluxbb. They dont support LDAP as a backend. And we had decided a few months back that all new rollouts must have ldap backend so we can rollin CentOS-DS / openldap based backend. So we need to look at alternatives, and since the primary focus of these international sites is going be forums : Here is a shortlist ( if there is anything else that people are aware of, please add to this list ) - phpBB - SMF - Fudforum - phorum - fluxbb Requirements: - Must be able to scale ( couple of hundred thousand msgs ) - Must be able to handle ldap auth ( if it cant, whats involved in writing the ldap-auth portion ) - Must address the specific requirements raised by the present www.centos.org forum users ( Can you please fill this section in ? ) - Must support all languages we need ( pure utf8 support would be good ) - Secure - Skin'able Nice to have: - Capable of running multiple instances from a single deployment - responsive community :D Things we will need to do: - Decide on what s/w to use. - Give the ArtWork people enough time to get the look & feel sorted. - Migrate newbb forums from www.centos.org to $system ( hey, english is a language too :D ). - Migrate fr.centos.org into the final s/w - setup {de/es/ja/it/pt_br}.centos.org Actions: Ralph and Fabian are going to work on setting up a test ldap server, once that is online we will then start by installing into our test-vm-farm the various s/w to eval them. SIG repo layout and conflicts between projects within a SIG

At the moment, we're essentially using yum repos as the "patch" mechanism to CentOS Base: SIGs populate a repo with packages they want to add / override, and all other packages default to Base. The current setup is that every sig has exactly one production repo per CentOS version. Also, we seem to be wanting to see SIGs not as individual projects, but to make the 'G' an actual "group": so, for instance, the Virt SIG has both Xen and Docker, and we've recently approved oVirt. But there's a bit of a conflict here: what if one project in the SIG wants to use the package from Base, and another project in the SIG wants to use a custom-built package? Or what if both projects want to customize their packages in different ways? In particular: the Docker project in the Virt SIG wants to supply updated versions of Docker; but at the moment uses the kernel package from Base. The Xen project, on the other hand, needs to supply a different kernel package that has dom0 support enabled. Up until this point, this hasn't been an issue because I've been doing Xen development in virt6-testing, and Lokesh has been doing Docker development in virt7-testing. But I'm hoping to get Xen for CentOS 7 out soon, and I was just about to upload the Xen kernel to the CBS, when it occurred to me that if I did so, then everyone using the virt7-testing repo for Docker would suddenly get my updated kernel as well. So it seems we have a couple of ways to approach it. 1. Keep it one repo per SIG, and make all projects in a SIG sort out shared dependencies. 2. Allow one repo per *project* within a SIG (e.g., virt6-xen, virt7-docker) 3. Have some alternate way of doing a "patch", instead of repos. In the case of xen / docker, I haven't talked with Lokesh about this at all; it may be that he's fine with sharing a kernel with Xen. But it does increase the workload: now Lokesh needs to maintain the Docker side of the kernel, whereas before they could just rely on our upstream to do a lot of that testing. Furthermore, it increases the complexity of development and testing: before when doing kernel work, I could just test Xen; now the kernel needs to be tested by both Xen and Docker. And finally, now users of both projects get a kernel update whenever either one does. Which, of course, is pretty much the same as any other distro; but as a whole, at the moment at least, we have a lot less resources than any other distro our size and popularity. On the whole I'm inclined to prefer #2. Thoughts? -George

Centos 7 - gnome-initial-setup with uid < 500

Hi there, I install Centos 7 machines through kickstart + a post install script. I do not need the gnome-initial-setup to run at all. My post install script create a user and deletes the guest account. When the uid of the newly created user is > 500 everything is fine but when the uid is < 500 the gnome-initial-setup still shows up. Can anyone tell me how to disable/configure gnome-initial-setup for users with uid < 500 ? Cheers, Olivier DELHOMME.

Hello everyone, I want to briefly introduce myself. I am a Red Hat employee working on ABRT[1]. We have recently added support for CentOS on the ABRT server[2] and we would like continue in these integration efforts. First of all, I want to submit a pair of patches improving ABRT's UX on CentOS: - do not offer users to report to Red Hat Portal - offer users to send an email to upstream - stop wasting of resources by running sos, because its output is useless for CentOS users In the near future, we would like to integrate ABRT with CentOS Bug Tracker in the same way as ABRT integrates with Red Hat Bugzilla[3]. We are done with the analysis phase[4] and, now, we are working on a testsuite[5]. Unfortunately, MantisBT misses more advanced searching what prevents us from implementing a tool similar to one we have for Bugzilla. At least we need to search by DUPHASH (an unique identifier of a crash, something like tag). Would you be willing to run a MantisBT plugin adding the things we need, if we develop it? Xfce for CentOS group

Hi list! Since the Alternative Desktop SIG didn't happen, we thought we would make a more focused effort and improve the Xfce desktop environment experience on CentOS. That might end up being a dedicated CentOS SIG, or just a couple of improvements to the existing packages from EPEL. Once upon a time, or more precisely: back in the CentOS 5.0 days, Xfce 4.4 was available in Extras and it was a pretty simple install that just worked "out of the box". Now, there's the newer versions available via EPEL - but the experience is nowhere near painless... Going to try to meet up with other interested parties during FOSDEM, to see if we can't improve upon that and at least fix the low hanging issues. And get some better Xfce testing and feedback going, as well. A more long-term goal is make it an alternative to GNOME (Workstation). I've rounded up some of the issues, that currently exist: * The theme and icons are wrong, either missing or just ugly * The background image is wrong, ending up with a single color * X11 and Fonts are missing, so just adding the group doesn't work * Some bugs need backporting or fixing, like in Terminal or Xfwm. See http://afb.users.sourceforge.net/xfce/centos/centos-xfce.html Right now, one starts with a Minimal (or Server) install of CentOS. Then adds Base, X11 (including fonts), and finally Xfce (from EPEL). Once the aforementioned problems are taken care of, that should be it. Eventually, it might even end up being a "spin" or available image ? As mentioned earlier, here are the applicable versions of each: * CentOS 5 - Xfce 4.4 (in CentOS Extras) * CentOS 5 - Xfce 4.6 (based on Fedora 6) * CentOS 6 - Xfce 4.8 (based on Fedora 12) * CentOS 7 - Xfce 4.10 (based on Fedora 18) To replace GNOME PackageKit there's the Yum Extender, and to replace GDM there's LightDM (more work is needed, to make a CentOS-6 version). The GNOME icons and GNOME themes will probably "work" to start with, but one can probably improve upon that as well (as a lower priority). Port CloudSigma to CentOS's CloudInit

Hey guys, I had a conversation with Jim Perrin and Karanbir Singh about this and it should be relatively trivial. However, Jim suggested that we moved the discussion here. Here is the status today: * The CloudSigma provider for CloudInit is complete and is maintained by Canonical[1] and is included in (12.04 and forward) * Jim wrote a patch (attached). It isn't complete, but it is a start. * There is also a port to CoreOS (re-written in Go) [2] * Since I didn't write the code, I don't know of the exact workflow, but I think these are the relevant files: ** cloudinit/cs_utils.py ** cloudinit/sources/DataSourceCloudSigma.py ** tests/unittests/test_datasource/test_cloudsigma.py I'm involved with CloudSigma, and I'd be happy to sponsor anyone willing to take on the task of porting this with resources at CloudSigma for testing. Unfortunately, I don't have any internal resources to allocate towards this at this point, but I know that we have plenty of customers running CentOS that would love to see this happen. GlusterFS is now available from Storage SIG

Hi All, GlusterFS and ecosystem packages (e.g. Samba, NFS ganesha and CTDB) are available in testing repo. These packages have been signed with storage sig gpg keys. We have a 7 step quick start to get you going really fast [3] . For more info please refer the the admin guide [4] or GlusterFS documentation home page [5]. While testing these packages, if you run in to any issues , you can get in touch with us on centos-devel , gluster-users mailing lists or on irc channel #gluster (on Freenode) Let us know if things work as expected as only after we get some positive feedback , we will we be able to move these packages to the stable released repositories. Scope of testing done by CentOS Development Team

Hello, What types of tests does the CentOS Development Team do for software in its repositories? Where does it get its test catalog from? I want to create a testing process which is equal to if not more rigorous that the CentOS process for any third party software we use. For example, if I install the php-mysqlnd package from the Remi repository, I want to test it just as carefully as the php-mysql package has been tested before I get it from the CentOS repository. Publish Errata for CentOS

Hello, I originally asked on the centos mailing list when CentOS will publish errata like Red Hat does for RHEL. It has since turned into a discussion which seems more fit for the centos-devel list, so I'm moving it here now. Here is the last post on the centos list: http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2015-January/149122.html The current problem which needs to be tackled is where to get the data from. It has been suggested that getting the data from Red Hat's emails would not be a breach of Red Hat's ToU. Can anybody confirm this? If this is the case, then we can just subscribe a bot to the emails and generate the data from that and put it in updateinfo.xml. Thanks, David

Say hello to CentOS DevCloud

hi, We've been working on this on and off for a while, and are pretty close to taking up user accounts now. I've started documenting the User part of things here : http://wiki.centos.org/DevCloud There is a GUI as well, but meh. Everyone can CLI it. This is running off OpenNebula on 4 machines, with gluster doing the storage under it. There are another 4 machines waiting to do in, as soon as we get extra power capacity at the DC it will expand ( from 64 cores now, to 128 cores ); there are a few TiB of fairly performant storage backing this entire setup. building an AWS specific kernel

hi, In order to resolve a problem we have with the new c4.8xlarge instance type, we need to carry a patch that isnt in the main distro kernel. Therefore, we are going to roll the patch into a kernel with disttag .e6.aws and use that for the x86_64/CentOS-6 AMI images refresh for Jan '15. And setup a repo for folks using that AMI to get, and continue to get their kernel updates. Hello, For CentOS 7 I rely, at work for our minimal pxe image, on the livecd-tools that are provided by Fabian: http://people.centos.org/arrfab/CentOS7/LiveMedia/RPMS/ I would like to know if there is a plan to maybe ship these RPMs in centos Extras (http://mirror.centos.org/centos/7/extras/) ? CentOS Atomic host repo now has nightly updates

hi, the CentOS Atomic Host repo is now getting nightly updates. These are done automatically, and pushed to the repo location on buildlogs.centos.org/centos/7/atomic/x86_64/repo In order to apply the updates, login to your atomic host and run : sudo rpm-ostree upgrade You can also see the Atomic history and rollback options via: sudo atomic status In order to compare available rollback options, you can use the 'atomic rpm diff' and 'atomic rpm list' commands. Finally, you can rollback the changes using this atomic command; details on the process are mentioned in the man page available via 'man atomic' on the machine instance. ------- The repo is updated with all devel components going into the Atomic host, including docker, cockpit, flannel, kubernetes and rpm-ostree itself. Additionally, all CentOS Linux 7 updates are included as well. Building kernel modules via the CBS ?

Hello, Earlier today I tried to build the SCST source RPM via the CentOS Community Build System (CBS). The first attempt failed because kernel headers under /lib/modules/%{kver} were missing. So I added "BuildRequires: kernel-devel" in the SCST spec. However, this caused the build server to install the kernel-debug-devel RPM instead of the kernel-devel RPM (see also https://cbs.centos.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=6041 for the logs). Does anyone know whether I am doing something wrong or whether this is an issue with the build system ? An attempt to build against the bananas6-el6 target also failed. In the logs generated for this target I found the following: http://mirror.rdu2.centos.org/centos/6/os/x86_64/Packages/audit-libs-2.2-2.…: [Errno 14] PYCURL ERROR 22 - "The requested URL returned error: 404 Not Found". Image building features enabled in CBS

Hello all, Thanks to Thomas' (alphacc) work last Friday, we now have the image building features enable on the CBS koji instance. I'll give a very brief summary of how to use it. The general form of the koji command is: koji -p cbs image-build <image_name> <image_version> <build_target> <install_tree_url> <arch> --release <image_release> --distro <distro_name_version> --kickstart <local_kickstart_file> --format <format_type> --disk-size <disk_size_in_gb> --repo <repo_url> (optional) --scratch (optional) --nowait (optional) The image build must be given a name, version and release. These function in much the same way as they do in RPM. In particular, the name must be added as an allowed package in the output tag for the <build_target> provided on the command line. You can specify more than one --format option. The most useful options are: 'raw-xz' - xz compressed raw file 'qcow2' - qcow2 'rhevm-ova' - A single file OVF image (aka OVA) for RHEV-M 'vsphere-ova' - An OVA for vSphere/VMWare 'docker' - A docker base image, suitable for "docker load" Any "url" or "repo" lines in your input kickstart file will be removed. The "url" line is replaced by whatever <install_tree_url> you give above. You can, optionally, provide additional repos to Anaconda by giving one or more "--repo <url>" arguments. Until we sort out how exactly we want kickstart files store in RCM (likely git.centos.org) we will be restricted to doing scratch builds, indicated with a "--scratch" option above. Here is the exact command I used to do initial testing of the feature: koji image-build \ centos-7-imcleod-test 1 atomic7-el7.centos \ http://mirror.centos.org/centos/7/os/x86_64/ x86_64 \ --release=1 \ --distro RHEL-7.0 \ --kickstart=/tmp/RHEL7.auto \ --format=qcow2 \ --scratch \ --nowait \ --disk-size=10 The "RHEL7.auto" kickstart is the minimal/JEOS RHEL7 kickstart from Oz, available here: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/clalancette/oz/master/oz/auto/RHEL7.auto In order for this to work I had to ask alphacc to add me to the "image" permission in the CBS. I then had to add the centos-7-imcleod-test "package" to the "atomic7-testing" tag (which is the destination for the "atomic7-el7.centos" build target). CentOSPlus kernels for C7 that have Ceph enabled may have a security issue

CentOSPlus kernels, kernel-plus-3.10.0-123.4.4.el7 or newer, have the Ceph option enabled. It was discovered that there is a security issue in Ceph [1]. A patch that fixes the issue is available from kernel.org [2] but cannot be applied to the RHEL/CentOS kernel as such. We will have to disable Ceph in the next update to the plus kernel unless someone comes up with a fix for the current RHEL code. Hi, After installing a service on centos 7 the shutdown/reboot takes 5 minutes. I would like to debug the shutdown process and see where it hangs. Where could I find the log files of the shutdown process? -sgb

JBEAP rebuild as a sub-repository

Greetings, some time ago I've met a thread [1] about rebuilding JBEAP [2] for CentOS. Seems that there is no progress since 2013 so there is some moments that should be addressed: 1. Did we really needs JBEAP rebuilds? I could not find anything that could show that someone interesting in JBoss EAP RPMs. 2. Could CentOS project maintain JBEAP rebuilds? I mean was it possible for JBEAP rebuilds to be officially-supplied by CentOS project or should I create another unofficial repo? Buildlogs c7 directory naming

buildlogs.centos.org currently has the following directories/repos that are applicable to building CentOS-7: http://buildlogs.centos.org/ The applicable directories are: c7-extras, c7-plus, c7-updates, and c7.00.02, c7.00.03, c7.00.04 We are going to make a slight change to this layout .. it will effect c7-updates. We are going to change the name of that directory to c7.00.u Then for future builds, we will have: c7.01.b (for base) and c7.01.u (for updates) during the 7.1 build cycle and period between. WHne Red Hat releases the 7.2 source code, we will create c7.02.b and c7.02.u The reason for all the different build repos (similar to how we build both CenOS-5 and CentOS-6) is so we can easily later build something against any of the previous versions at any stage we want (7.1 base only, etc). As stated before, the only real change to existing infrastructure will be that c7-updates directory will become c7.00.u and we are not going to modify the c7.00.0[2-4] directories as those were for different stages of the Alpha, Beta build process. This change will require that I change any mock configs here so that c7-updates will become c7.00.u as well, which I will do once the change is in place. Thanks, Johnny Hughes
