hi guys, lots of people on this list are keen on contributing to the CentOS effort - and one place where we could, as a group of people, make a massive difference is being able to deliver a ksplice upgrade model. A couple of people have started in silo's to try and get something together but I feel it might be a good time to try and see if we can do somethng as a group. Do we have people on the list who find the idea of rebootless kernel upgrades interesting ? Is there some desire to try and make that happen within the CentOS Ecosystem ? - KB

anaconda dependency calculation?

Hi all, I'm trying to find a tool that calculates all dependencies for a specific package or group of packages for use with CentOS 5 (beta) with the intention of putting together a custom single CD build of CentOS 5. With CentOS 4 i used a python script that used the hdrlist module to find all dependencies which borrowed code from a number of sources. I've looked at yumdownloader and how it checks dependencies (using the --resolve option) but if i pass it the list of packages defined in say the Base and the Core yum groups which generally form an absolute minimal install i end up with about 200 packages. If i do a custom install (using beta 1 disks) and deselect everything i end up with over 300 packages. So i'm guessing anaconda calculates dependencies in a slightly different way, can anyone point me to files/code where i should be looking to find out? Hi, Earlier in the evening today Ralph, Fabian and I had a chat about the present state of the language subsites. This email sort of summarises the main issue ( s/w ). We seem to have run into a slight technical hitch with punbb/fluxbb. They dont support LDAP as a backend. And we had decided a few months back that all new rollouts must have ldap backend so we can rollin CentOS-DS / openldap based backend. So we need to look at alternatives, and since the primary focus of these international sites is going be forums : Here is a shortlist ( if there is anything else that people are aware of, please add to this list ) - phpBB - SMF - Fudforum - phorum - fluxbb Requirements: - Must be able to scale ( couple of hundred thousand msgs ) - Must be able to handle ldap auth ( if it cant, whats involved in writing the ldap-auth portion ) - Must address the specific requirements raised by the present www.centos.org forum users ( Can you please fill this section in ? ) - Must support all languages we need ( pure utf8 support would be good ) - Secure - Skin'able Nice to have: - Capable of running multiple instances from a single deployment - responsive community :D Things we will need to do: - Decide on what s/w to use. - Give the ArtWork people enough time to get the look & feel sorted. - Migrate newbb forums from www.centos.org to $system ( hey, english is a language too :D ). - Migrate fr.centos.org into the final s/w - setup {de/es/ja/it/pt_br}.centos.org Actions: Ralph and Fabian are going to work on setting up a test ldap server, once that is online we will then start by installing into our test-vm-farm the various s/w to eval them. hi Alpha2: registry.centos.org/kbsingh/centos-atomic:7-alpha2 The CentOS Atomic Container is a minimal ( 30MB on disk ) image that can be used to host static content, and small footprint content that does not need the entire CentOS Linux Base image. This is also not meant to replace CentOS Linux Base image as the default, we want to make it available as an additional container base for apps that find it useful. The main highlight is that it does not contain yum, but has microdnf. I am looking for feedback, and some wider testing as well as recommendations on howto further reduce size, before we move to release. [infra] DevCloud migration (users, please read)

Hi, Some of you actually use our DevCloud (https://wiki.centos.org/DevCloud) as a playground/sandbox environment when willing to test some deployments/scratch operations. We want you to notice that we'll completely refresh that environment next week, so DevCloud itself will be unavailable during the reinstall phase, but also all VMs currently running in that environment will also be destroyed (it's a "cloud" and for dev/testing so everything could be considered ephemeral ) Details of the migration: - setting up two new dedicated storage boxes (each using SSD disks for faster storage backend for the provisioned VMs) - reinstalling the hypervisors from CentOS 6 to CentOS 7 - migrating to RDO/OpenStack (Ocata release) - DevCloud users rights in OpenStack will be synced from ACO (https://accounts.centos.org) Due to the fact that we also have to remove some physical components from some nodes to other nodes, we'll have to shutdown the whole environment. The maintenance window is scheduled for """"Tuesday August 1st, 2:00 pm UTC time"""". You can convert to local time with $(date -d '2017-08-01 14:00 UTC') We'll do our best to keep the maintenance window as short as possible, but we also have a lot of things to reconfigure behind the scene (including new network switches). Adding s390x as an alternative architecture

With the current efforts under way with aarch64 and ppc64le, I would like to suggest that s390x also be added as an alternative architecture. Obviously hardware would be the biggest obstacle, but I do not see any reason why we couldn't get started with just emulated hardware. -- Jason DeTiberus

CentOS PaaS openshift origin rpm: missing origin-master

Hello folks, I am trying to build an openshift cluster on centos7 with rpms. Now, since this afternoon, at least, I can not find the origin-master rpm (containing the systectl service configuration, et.al). I am sure the origin-master rpm was to be found yesterday; can anyone tell me what happened? Regards, Stefan. Bug #12169 not yet fixed

Hello Fabian and Thomas, I think bug #12169 might have been closed prematurely (again). The reported issue is that %addon sections are ignored by CBS, not that we need to upgrade our infra to CentOS Linux 7 (that was just what we initially thought to be enough to avoid the problem). The problem was that pykickstart had no support for %addon sections, and it removed any unknown section from generated file. I reported this upstream a while ago, and Chris Lumens added a workaround 12 days ago. MATROX GPU - xorg-x11-drv-mga-1.6.3 on supermicro server

Hello Guys, our cluster runs till 2014 on supermicro board. It is not unusual that still mainboards with mga graphics cards are delivered. So I have then adjusted the mga driver from centos 6 - the specification file - , to be build on CentOS 7. Since then this runs on the headnode without failures. Update on CentOS Community Container Pipeline

Hi All, Here is recent updates on CentOS Community Container Pipeline. * Issues with jenkins for proceeding with builds even in failure are fixed now. * Issues with workers not deleting jobs properly in case of failure are fixed now. * Jenkins is updated with security fixes * Repeating failed builds are checked and fixed now * Updated service logs for better visibility and proper level * Openshift projects are now cleaned up properly before running a build. * UI for registry is set up on pre-prod * Jenkins jobs are now synced up regularly with container-index. On update or removal of existing entries in container-index, Jobs gets updated or deleted. Our current focus is on: * Builds to be serialized after the linter is successful * Setting up monitoring tool for getting application errors fix them quickly, * Fixing index reader to read proper value in string format (currently it reads numeric values a number and truncates it) * Adding functional and test cases for more coverage around failed cases * Provisioning for cleaning up the current environment before a deployment of the service. CentOS Atomic Host 7.1706 Released

[1] CentOS Atomic Host is a lean operating system designed to run Docker containers, built from standard CentOS 7 RPMs, and tracking the component versions included in Red Hat Enterprise Linux Atomic Host. These images are available for download at cloud.centos.org. The backing ostree repo is published to mirror.centos.org. Proposed changes to CentOS Atomic SIG meetings

The members of the CentOS Atomic SIG have discussed adjusting our meeting schedule to accommodate more time zones, and to consolidate our meetings somewhat with the upstream Project Atomic meetings. We propose moving the CentOS Atomic SIG meeting to occur every two weeks, on Mondays, at 0400 UTC, to alternate with the every-two-week atomic sig meeting that occurs on Mondays at 1600 UTC. The idea is that the 0400 UTC meetings will accommodate community members in Bangalore, the 1600 UTC meeting will accommodate Eastern US and European members, and both times are accessible to the US west coast. The next Project Atomic community meeting is scheduled for July 24th and 1600 UTC, and the first CentOS Atomic SIG meeting on the new schedule would be at 0400 UTC on July 31st. The Project Atomic community meeting takes place on freenode in #atomic. We'd like to start holding the CentOS Atomic SIG meeting in #atomic as well, to promote collaboration with other atomic community members. Questions, concerns, etc? Regards, Jason

Updating golang in CentOS Extras?

Hi, Currently CentOS Extras contains golang-1.4.2, but newer versions have been released since. Is there a plan for updating golang any time soon? In the CentOS Storage SIG we have a package (heketi) that started to depend on golang-1.6.2 (iirc). For us the older version of Golang in Extrasa results in preventing to update Heketi, and so users will not get the new features that are released upstream. If Extras can not get a newer version of Golang (soonish), what is the preferred approach to make an updated version of Golang available for repositories in a SIG? Thanks! Niels

Introduction to Cloud Programming with GreatFree

*GreatFree? Cloud Programming? Why?* *Bing Li* *bing.li(a)asu.edu <bing.li(a)asu.edu>* GreatFree is a cloud programming environment I invented during the past seven years gradually. Using it, developers are able to program any distributed systems in any distributed computing environments rapidly and flexibly. To the best of my knowledge, this ought to be the first tool that attains this goal at this moment. You must not believe? If not, could you please tell me any other ones else? First of all, I need to define the term of programming from my prospective. Programming is the technology that offers developers the way to implement a software system with their knowledge in the specific domain only. According to that, when developers implement a distributed system, especially over the Internet, there is no such a tool, a programming environment or a programming language. Thus, two choices are always employed by them. The first one is to construct their systems over existing frameworks. Each of those frameworks focuses on one specific system only. Most domain-specific issues have already been resolved within the frameworks such that developers do not need to take into account them. Rather, developers work with script languages that are completely independent of the specific distributed environment. In contrast, another choice is to implement the system with a generic programming language. Unfortunately, this is a nightmare since they have to take care of not only domain knowledge of their systems but also thousands of details that have nothing to do with the specific domain. Although developers can implement distributed systems through the two alternative ways, simple or difficult, that is not programming from my perspective. Why is it so important to apply developers’ domain knowledge when implementing a software system? The answer is the freedom of development. Developers have the highest flexibility when programming distributed systems over the Internet with generic programming languages. However, it is too tough to tolerate such that only super guys might choose this way. We just forget about it. On the other hand, although it is convenient to do that with existing frameworks, developers lose almost all of the freedom to construct the system according to their expectations and knowledge since they are even not aware of any distributed issues. For consumers, that is fine. However, for developers, that is unacceptable. Without learning the internal structures, automobile developers are degenerated to drivers. Without grasping distributed knowledge, software developers can be replaced by high school students. Moreover, I believe programming with developers’ skills and knowledge is an activity full of joy. Proficient guys would like to manipulate a tool that provides them with rich options and choices rather than the fully-automatic one. Finally, from the academic point of view, it is weird that a programming tool is not available for the development of distributed system over the Internet. What scares computer scientists? With respect to the above discussions, I propose the tool, GreatFree, a new cloud programming environment, which allows developers to apply their distributed knowledge and skills as well as abandon any other irrelevant issues. Additionally, with its skillful designs, it also achieves the goal of rapid development. The concept of programming is realized in practice in the domain of the Internet distributed systems development. Now its initial version is available online. It is making progresses to push it to be the generic language for any distributed systems development. You are welcome to taste it. I appreciate so much for any suggestions! Finally, I need to indicate the relation between GreatFree and cloud programming. As one important instance of distributed systems over the Internet, no programming tools are available for cloud systems as well. Since it is so popular, I would like to entitle GreatFree together with the technology of cloud programming although GreatFree can also be used to program non-cloud systems. Incidentally, if you search the keyword, cloud programming, over the Web, you can get some results. Unfortunately, GreatFree is different from them in nature. Those stuffs look more like new generic languages with limited distributed features rather than the one to program the Internet-based distributed systems. openldap with ndb

Hi, I just joined this mailing list because I compiled with success openldap with --enable-ndb=yes. I'm searching for documentation about package development and versioning, but I didn't find any clue about how to submit a patch for an existing package. I was surprised that CentOS 7 has man pages with support for openldap with ndb backend, but then I realised that openldap package was compiled with ndb module disabled. I pick source rpm of openldap and compiled it with a change in configure.in file to pass the checks. Than with the needed dev packages for MySQL Cluster I obtained a slapd with ndb support. So I ask for help how to submit my patch for review? Cheers, Samuel

Updated CentOS images for Vagrant

Hello Vagrant users, we just released updated CentOS images for Vagrant, v1706.01. That's not that interesting in itself, since there are just updated packages (nothing else), but Hashicorp moved the hosting of all Vagrant images away from Atlas, to Vagrant Cloud. To add to the confusion, they didn't move it back to vagrantcloud.com, where it used to be - they host it on app.vagrantup.com. They wrote that they will provide redirects, so the move should be transparent for end users. I didn't try if SCL Vagrant still works, but a small tool I wrote, Endymion, still uses Atlas links and works just as before (except for an extra redirect). On the positive side, "centos/7" is now the fourth most popular image on Vagrant Cloud: https://app.vagrantup.com/boxes/search If you encounter any problems after the move away from Atlas, please post a message to the list.
