Hi everyone, Welcome to the CPE team weekly project update mail! Background: The Community Platform Engineering group is the Red Hat team combining IT and release engineering from Fedora and CentOS. Our goal is to keep core servers and services running and maintained, build releases, and other strategic tasks that need more dedicated time than volunteers can give. For better communication, we will be giving weekly reports to the CentOS and Fedora communities about the general tasks and work being done. CR repo in CentOS 8

I see that CentOS-CR.repo is included with the centos-release package, however there is no CR repo to be found at the location it has at the base url: [cr] name=CentOS-$releasever - cr baseurl=http://mirror.centos.org/$contentdir/$releasever/cr/$basearch/os/ gpgcheck=1 enabled=1 gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-centosofficial $ dnf repolist CentOS-8 - AppStream 173 kB/s | 5.6 MB 00:33 CentOS-8 - Base 976 kB/s | 5.3 MB 00:05 CentOS-8 - cr 222 B/s | 239 B 00:01 Error: Failed to synchronize cache for repo 'cr' My assumption was that the AppStream repo was going to replace the CR repo, is that correct? CentOS 8 Kernel Updates

Can someone explain what's going on with the kernel? The kernel-4.18.0-80.7.1 package is the latest available via the repos, despite kernel-4.18.0-80.11.2 having been compiled 16 days ago. (https://koji.mbox.centos.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=4562) The koji downloads appear to still be blocked. The kernel-4.18.0-144 kernel used to be available via the Stream-BaseOS repo, but it no longer appears to be showing up. The package is still available for download, but it doesn't appear via dnf (although it has previously). I suspect the package was removed from the repo metadata, but the rpm file remains. (http://mirror.centos.org/centos/8-stream/BaseOS/x86_64/os/Packages/kernel-4…) To make things even more confusing, the kernel-4.18.0-80.7.2 package was compiled a few days ago. And like the newer kernel-4.18.0-80.11.2, appears to have never been pushed to the repos. (https://koji.mbox.centos.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=4618) So my question is why is kernel-4.18.0-80.11.2 available? Why was the older kernel-4.18.0-80.7.2 built, and then never released? Is there an issue with these packages in need of fixing, or it simply a bug in the release/repo process? The following issues were addressed by these newer kernel packages: RHSA-2019:2411 / CVE-2019-1125 & CVE-2019-13272 RHSA-2019:2703 / CVE-2019-3846 & CVE-2019-3887 & CVE-2019-9500 & CVE-2019-9503 & CVE-2019-11487 & CVE-2019-12817 & CVE-2018-19824 RHSA-2019:2827 / CVE-2019-14835 I haven't looked into the details, but at first glance the issues seem rather important. Pacemaker and pcs missing in CentOS 8

Hello I've been evaluating CentOS 8 for a while now. I found that pacemaker and pcs packages (aka "High Availability Addon") are missing in the default repositories. They seem to exist in EPEL. quota-devel package is not available in CentOS 8

Hi, it is my time now to ask for a package to be added to PowerTools: Samba needs quota-devel to compile with file system quota support. In RHEL 8 we do have the package in the build root but not in any published repos. This means we cannot rebuild Samba with quota in upstream CI to run CI on CentOS 8 (or CentOS Stream). Centos 8 Stream Software app repodata fails

Hey there the "Software" app in GNOME fails to refresh the cache although it has the URL set to http://mirror.centos.org/$contentdir/$stream/AppStream/x86_64/os/repodata/r… which presumably resolves to this: http://mirror.centos.org/centos-8/8.0.1905/AppStream/x86_64/os/repodata/ It would seem that it just reads the baseurl from /etc/yum.repos.d/Centos-Stream-Appstream.repo and yum repolist returns fine so I'm wondering how to troubleshoot this ? Currently the "Software" app shows no software at all which is a shame. Please do let me know if this is a known issue thanks very much.

CentOS Stream and major releases

I'm pretty sure I understand the workflow, or what will be the workflow, for CentOS Stream and RHEL, but there's one thing I'm curious about that I'd love to have clarified, at least to the extent that it's been planned or thought about so far: Historically, a major release of RHEL has been cut from Fedora and polished up (or chopped down or...) but now that CentOS Stream exists, I can see several paths forward. One possibility I envision is that CStream will progress at about the same pace as RHEL point releases today, which would suggest that when it comes time to branch something for RHEL 9, that might once again be Fedora, with the branch then being a major release of CStream that'll be polished into what will be released as RHEL 9.0. Another possibility is that CStream will move somewhat quicker, with point releases over time covering more ground, somewhat obviating the notion of a major release - but this would conflict with the notion of a stable platform for vendors and partners to use as a long-lived base for their products, so I suspect it's not the answer. A third possibility is that when RHEL 8 slows down [1] and there wouldn't normally be another point release of it, CStream will pick up pace and make bigger changes until it rolls forward to where RHEL 9 will pick up. This is the one I'm hoping for personally, as it would keep CStream as a continuous rolling release, and appropriate for situations where you'd want a rolling release. (There's no official equivalent to Leapp for CentOS, but this would mean that CStream wouldn't need one.) Is the current thinking close to one of these, or are there options I've missed? Firstly, here is a brief overview of the team and our remit. The Community Platform Engineering Team (CPE) is an internal Red Hat team dedicated to the CentOS and Fedora projects where we contribute to the infrastructure, design, implement and maintain services critical to the success of the communities.
