hi guys, lots of people on this list are keen on contributing to the CentOS effort - and one place where we could, as a group of people, make a massive difference is being able to deliver a ksplice upgrade model. A couple of people have started in silo's to try and get something together but I feel it might be a good time to try and see if we can do somethng as a group. Do we have people on the list who find the idea of rebootless kernel upgrades interesting ? Is there some desire to try and make that happen within the CentOS Ecosystem ? - KB

anaconda dependency calculation?

Hi all, I'm trying to find a tool that calculates all dependencies for a specific package or group of packages for use with CentOS 5 (beta) with the intention of putting together a custom single CD build of CentOS 5. With CentOS 4 i used a python script that used the hdrlist module to find all dependencies which borrowed code from a number of sources. I've looked at yumdownloader and how it checks dependencies (using the --resolve option) but if i pass it the list of packages defined in say the Base and the Core yum groups which generally form an absolute minimal install i end up with about 200 packages. If i do a custom install (using beta 1 disks) and deselect everything i end up with over 300 packages. So i'm guessing anaconda calculates dependencies in a slightly different way, can anyone point me to files/code where i should be looking to find out? Hi, Earlier in the evening today Ralph, Fabian and I had a chat about the present state of the language subsites. This email sort of summarises the main issue ( s/w ). We seem to have run into a slight technical hitch with punbb/fluxbb. They dont support LDAP as a backend. And we had decided a few months back that all new rollouts must have ldap backend so we can rollin CentOS-DS / openldap based backend. So we need to look at alternatives, and since the primary focus of these international sites is going be forums : Here is a shortlist ( if there is anything else that people are aware of, please add to this list ) - phpBB - SMF - Fudforum - phorum - fluxbb Requirements: - Must be able to scale ( couple of hundred thousand msgs ) - Must be able to handle ldap auth ( if it cant, whats involved in writing the ldap-auth portion ) - Must address the specific requirements raised by the present www.centos.org forum users ( Can you please fill this section in ? ) - Must support all languages we need ( pure utf8 support would be good ) - Secure - Skin'able Nice to have: - Capable of running multiple instances from a single deployment - responsive community :D Things we will need to do: - Decide on what s/w to use. - Give the ArtWork people enough time to get the look & feel sorted. - Migrate newbb forums from www.centos.org to $system ( hey, english is a language too :D ). - Migrate fr.centos.org into the final s/w - setup {de/es/ja/it/pt_br}.centos.org Actions: Ralph and Fabian are going to work on setting up a test ldap server, once that is online we will then start by installing into our test-vm-farm the various s/w to eval them. Unshipped -devel packages in CentOS Linux

Hi Folks, We're gearing up to build the next minor release of CentOS Linux 8 so I thought now would be a good time to revisit the conversation we've been having about what to do with unshipped -devel packages. Just a reminder on a few guiding principles: - The BaseOS, AppStream, and PowerTools repos in CentOS Linux are designed and composed to match Upstream as closely as possible, both in content and behavior - Unshipped devel packages have no defined maintenance lifecycle in Upstream, and especially not in CentOS - We know that some of these devel packages are essential to build applications that the CentOS (and probably EPEL) communities care about. The problems we need to solve if we decide to ship these packages somewhere in a CentOS artifact: - Communicate that these packages are provided as-is and are not meant for runtime dependencies - Provide the packages in a form that is consumable for individuals and the EPEL community I'd like to propose that we create a separate repository, disabled by default that is composed of the -devel packages that we care about, bundled in a module. The name of this repository and the module is up for discussion, but I would like the naming to help with the communication that these are not for general consumption. I'd also like to discuss how we populate this repo/module. It would be easiest to just dump every unshipped package in and move on, but that doesn't help us track which of these packages are truly important outside of building the distro. Shipping *everything* also represents a larger content set to manage if lifecycle issues come up in the future. An alternative would be to store this definition in git (we'll need to do that anyways), and allow folks to make pull requests to include new content, shipping this as a separate repo would let us spin updates on demand. Backport of xfrm kernel bugfix

Hi All! We have been dealing with a memory leak in the kernel for IKEv2 and IPSec connections relating to a memory leak in xfrm support on both el8 and el7. The symptom of this issue is that memory will continue allocating in slab over time making a box oom after too many connections. As per some external discussions I am sending the patch + bug report on to this list. It has already been accepted into upstream kernels (4.19 included) and is a pretty straight forward backport. I have tested and installed this on a few centos8 systems to validate that this does indeed solve the memory leak issue. rbz# 1780470

CentOS 8 Artwork needed

To all the artists and designers here, we need your help. With RHEL 8 beta released, we need to start producing artwork for CentOS 8. It's time for the CentOS Artwork SIG, and anyone else that's interested in contributing to this effort, to start working on everything that will be needed for the new release. What we know we need is anaconda artwork, and new desktop backgrounds to replace the current '7' themed stuff. As we dig, we may find more things that need to be updated to the new 8 theme. Hi, While bootstraping CloudSIG dependencies for CentOS8 [1], we've hit an issue with etcd, which used to be part of RHEL/CentOS7 but it's not in 8. As I see etcd to be part of kubernetes family (although also used out of it) I wonder what are the plans for the PaaS SIG in terms of adoption of CentOS8, is there any plan to rebuild etcd/k8s for it? For those of you who may not be know, CPE is the team inside RH responsible for CentOS and Fedora infra and engineering and is home to many of the Project folks you may be used to working with such as Fabian, Johnny, and Brian. On behalf of the CPE team I want to draw the communities attention to a recent blog post[1] which may impact you. The TL;DR is we're attempting to determine if our needs are best served by one of 3 solutions (in no particular order): * Pagure * Gitlab * Github We will be seeking input and requirements in an open and transparent manner on the future of a git forge solution which will be run by the CPE team on behalf of the CentOS community. Hello, I'm attempting to create a SWID tag for CentOS Linux. In Fedora's SWID tag https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/fedora-release/blob/master/f/distro-temp… we are able to reference https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Legal:Licenses/LicenseAgreement as the URL of the license for the distribution. What is the similar URL for CentOS 8? For CentOS 7 I've found http://mirror.centos.org/centos/7/os/x86_64/EULA but I don't see anything similar under http://mirror.centos.org/centos/8/. Based on https://linoxide.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/31-centos8-licence-agreemen… it seems like CentOS 8 uses the same wording but having stable URL to reference would be nice. Hello, what is the mechanism of contributing change to CentOS Stream but not necessarily to CentOS? In RHEL, redhat-release package ships SWID tag(s) for the distribution. Looking at http://mirror.centos.org/centos/8-stream/BaseOS/x86_64/os/Packages/ redhat-release rpm is not included there but centos-release is, the same as in CentOS. Out of the box USB wireless NIC?

Good afternoon, I'm installing CentOS 8.1 on a new box (thank you for the new version!). I have an Alfa AWUS036ACH USB wireless NIC that has good specs. Unfortunately, you have to build the driver for your kernel and I'm all sorts of trouble getting this done. What is a good, but simple USB Wireless adapter that CentOS 8.1 will pick up and I don't have to build any kernel modules? Thanks! Jeff

Dear All, Please note that tomorrow morning cbs.centos.org will be upgraded to support newer features and allow us to finally create C8 buildroots. An email will follow-up next week with the instruction to create C8 targets after we finish the test with selected SIGs. * What does that mean for you ? We'll upgrade koji and tools to 1.19 version. You can convert to local time with $(date -d '2019-01-21 7:00 UTC') * What will be the impact ? Koji build service will be down for 1 hour. It will not be possible to build new packages or images. Please note that temporary repositories served on cbs.centos.org will be also affected ; they are mostly used for CI. hi there were hardware issues that required emergency changes in the content release pipelines, one artifact of that is the sign push for sig content is down till that is changed to match some of the new paths. I'll aim at getting that fixed in the next day or so - in the mean time, if someone has time based release work going through let me know ( ideally on irc in #centos-devel ) and we can do something manual if needed. regards,

I don't remember reading anything on the centos lists about anyone suggesting to refresh the goals; is it possible to know who decided that there was a need to refresh the goals: a) Red Hat, b) Karsten Wade, c) others (who)? To me "transparently" means posting publicly about this on the centos-users list. Reaching out to specific members and RHEL engineering is the complete opposite of "transparently". OTOH, I understand Red Hat owns CentOS, so you have the right to do whatever you want with it, but please, just be open and say "Red Hat decided this". Please, don't do what corporations usually do, when they first decide what is useful to them, and then they try to put it like they are doing it for the users. Thanks

Public minutes On 2020-01-08 the CentOS Board of Directors held the first meeting of 2020, welcoming guest Rich Bowen, Community Architect for the CentOS Project. The group talked through some background for each-other as part of the framework for updating the projct goals. The Board is drafting a process that is for refreshing the project's goals openly and transparently. More details including a timeline should start rolling out in the middle of January to the centos-devel mailing list and announced on blog.centos.org. The Board then heard from Jim Perrin as head of Community Platform Engineering (CPE) about the ongoing work around the EL 8 rebuild, SIG needs, and what the path forward might look like. He covered how the teams have been making realtime changes to build systems due to the differences in how CentOS Linux 8 and CentOS Stream need to be built. Regarding some open requests, discussions on the build root are coming soon, as the team raises their heads from work that has been underway. In general, Jim reported that tooling around the build systems are improving by force. He identified Aofie Maloney as a key contact to work with Rich Bowen on highlighting the ongoing work from CPE that affects various CentOS Project constituencies. We’re all hoping this communication helps raise visibility and focus questions about work to keep everyone better informed. As a participant in the discussion, Rich Bowen agreed to write up a post for the community that covers the current situation of CentOS Linux 8 builds. Update: State of CentOS Linux 8, and CentOS Stream

We wanted to update you on what is happening, largely out of sight to most of the community, on the CentOS Linux 8 front. We have appreciated the patience of the community, but we understand that your patience won’t last forever. A lot of the work in rebuilding RHEL sources into CentOS Linux is handled by automation scripts. Due to the changes between RHEL 7 and RHEL 8, many of these scripts no longer work, and had to be fixed to reflect the new layout of the buildroot. This work has been largely completed, allowing us to pull the source from Red Hat without a lot of manual work. This, in turn, should make the process of rebuilding RHEL 8.2 go much more smoothly than RHEL 8.0 and 8.1 have done. Once 8.1 has been released, work will begin on bringing this new codebase, along with CentOS Stream, in to CBS (https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/CommunityBuildSystem) so that SIGs can build packages for CentOS Linux 8 and CentOS Stream. We will discuss this, and give updates of progress, on the centos-devel mailing list over the coming weeks. Some of you have observed that the CentOS team tends to prioritize doing the work over talking about it. While that’s not all bad, it does tend to leave most of you in the dark as to what it is that is being worked on, and we’re committed to greater transparency going forward. Once again, we appreciate your patience as we work through the growing pains of the 8 branch. java packages copr building issues when targeting centos-stream / epel8

Hi, not sure which mailing list to point for asking, but I've an issue while building unboundid-ldapsdk for el8 in copr.
