Hi, Earlier in the evening today Ralph, Fabian and I had a chat about the present state of the language subsites. This email sort of summarises the main issue ( s/w ). We seem to have run into a slight technical hitch with punbb/fluxbb. They dont support LDAP as a backend. And we had decided a few months back that all new rollouts must have ldap backend so we can rollin CentOS-DS / openldap based backend. So we need to look at alternatives, and since the primary focus of these international sites is going be forums : Here is a shortlist ( if there is anything else that people are aware of, please add to this list ) - phpBB - SMF - Fudforum - phorum - fluxbb Requirements: - Must be able to scale ( couple of hundred thousand msgs ) - Must be able to handle ldap auth ( if it cant, whats involved in writing the ldap-auth portion ) - Must address the specific requirements raised by the present www.centos.org forum users ( Can you please fill this section in ? ) - Must support all languages we need ( pure utf8 support would be good ) - Secure - Skin'able Nice to have: - Capable of running multiple instances from a single deployment - responsive community :D Things we will need to do: - Decide on what s/w to use. - Give the ArtWork people enough time to get the look & feel sorted. - Migrate newbb forums from www.centos.org to $system ( hey, english is a language too :D ). - Migrate fr.centos.org into the final s/w - setup {de/es/ja/it/pt_br}.centos.org Actions: Ralph and Fabian are going to work on setting up a test ldap server, once that is online we will then start by installing into our test-vm-farm the various s/w to eval them. If anyone would like to help, please feel free to jump right in. CentOS 7 (2009) in progress

OK all .. RHEL 7.9 source code updated today. I am currently working to start the build of CentOS 7 based on that [CentOS 7 (2009) ]. Currently, we need to bootstrap and then build llvm-toolset-9.0 and rust-toolset-1.41 as some of the released packages need those toolsets. I also need to check devtoolset-7 and devtoolset-8 and see if we need any updates to pacakges there before we start the main build .. and I need to see of any of the packages need devtoolset-9. Once we have all those prerequisites completed, I can start the main builds. The goal, as usual, is to get the CR repo populated in 7 to 10 days: https://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/Repositories/CR And the final release completed in less than 40 days. unable to create an account on bugs.centos.org due to captcha

Hi, I've been trying to create an account on https://bugs.centos.org. I'm blind, but all I find is a visual captcha. From inspection of the HTML source for the signup page, it appears that there might be an audio captcha implemented in flash, but I don't have flash on any of my devices. I went and grabbed a copy of the mantisbt source code, to get an idea of what it was doing and to determine whether I had any other options. Mantis uses a bundled third-party library to generate those captchas. In the source tree, it's vendor/dapphp/securimage. In the latest version, at least, that library will generate an HTML 5 <audio> tag by default, with a fallback to flash. The <audio> would work just fine for me. I don't know what version of Mantis BT bugs.centos.org is running, and that's why I'm writing here. Is there any chance of an upgrade / patch to fix my issue? Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help. -- Chris

EPEL Playground - Policy and Plans

EPEL playground (currently only for epel8) has recently changed it's overall policy. That new policy can be found here. https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL/Playground The biggest policy change is that epel-playground is not meant to be a stand-alone repository. If you use epel-playground, you are expected to have the regular epel repository enabled. Going along with that stand-alone change is the change that we will no longer be auto-building all epel builds in playground. This means that all instances of package.cfg will be removed, new epel branches will not have package.cfg in them, and requesting an epel branch will not automatically request a epel-playground branch. We will also be cleaning up (untagging) all automatically built, or old, playground packages. Not everything is happening at once. SCHEDULE: * Thursday September 24 - All package.cfg files will be removed from all epel8 dist-git branches. If you want to remove yours before then, that is fine. * Thursday October 1 - All automatically built, or old playground packages will be untagged from epel-playground. * Done (but not verified) - New epel8 branches should not have package.cfg in them. * Sometime Soon - fedpkg will be updated to not automatically request a epel-playground branch each time an epel branch is requested. https://pagure.io/fedpkg/issue/414 We appreciate all the input we've gotten from everyone. An independent system-release package for CentOS Stream

Hi Folks, Tl;dr: centos-release and centos-release stream are now consolidated in a new package: centos-stream-release Note: Throughout this email, pay close attention to mentions of centos-release-stream (the old package) and centos-stream-release (the new package). These are different packages. Our mission with CentOS Stream is to provide an early preview of what will make it into the next minor release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. To give us a jump-start on this goal at the beginning, we took CentOS Linux 8 and added some content in extra repositories, providing that preview for a select set of packages. Over the past few months we’ve been adding more and more content; you’ve likely seen more regular content updates to CentOS Stream especially now that our automated push tooling (thanks James and Siteshwar) and lots of package build and compose work (thanks Carl, Johnny, and Mohan) has kept us up to date with nightly RHEL development. To continue with our work to make CentOS Stream stand on its own, we’ve made the following changes to the CentOS Stream compose that is on its way out to the mirrors now: * centos-stream-release now provides redhat-release, centos-release, and system-release * centos-stream-repos controls the Stream yum repositories and is now exclusive to the repos from CentOS Linux What this means if you’re currently running CentOS Stream: Please perform a `dnf update` to get the latest system-release packages What this means if you’re running CentOS Linux, and would like to convert to CentOS Stream: For now, the previous method for upgrading to CentOS Stream still applies (`dnf install centos-release-stream && dnf distro-sync`). This will change in the future as we plan out our future centos-linux-release package. Stay tuned to the mailing list for more details. At the next CentOS Linux minor release we intend to make changes to match. As you may or may not know, we do not have the ability to currently announce CentOS Linux 8 announcements on the CentOS Annonuce Mailing List. We would like to add this in the future. For now, what we do have is an RSS feed for all updates that get released. Use your favorite RSS Feed Tool (I use Thunderbird .. lots of other things available). https://feeds.centos.org/ Subscribe to the xml file you are interested in .. for example, for normal CentOS Linux 8 x86_64 arch installs .. you would subscribe to: https://feeds.centos.org/centos-8-x86_64-BaseOS.xml https://feeds.centos.org/centos-8-x86_64-AppStream.xml This is for people who have asked about what rpms are updated and how to see when new updates happen on CentOS Linux 8. I did my best to contain relevance above. First question, the statement ""...Resilient Storage is not base...". There has been a shift from 7 to 8 that I don't understand. RHEL 7 provides dlm in ResilientStorage, then CentOS 7 provides dlm in base [1]. The dlm package is still part of ResilientStorage in RHEL 8, but can't be provided? I wasn't able to find any answer to why that was changed. Can you provide any insight to the shift? Second question, the current advice seems to be "dlm will be in centos-stream and you should use that." However, tdawson made a pretty explicit statement: "If people are running their production machines on CentOS Stream ... well, in my opinion, that's their problem."[2] These statements appear contradictory. Just trying to piece this all together so I can explain to my peers the business and community decisions going on here. Currently someone that set up a cluster with gfs2 in 7 can't do the same thing in 8 due to the dlm package missing. That is a loss of functionality and seems to indicate it's a bug or intentional reduction in feature set. If I'm misunderstanding any of this please educate me. Infrastructure SIG

In yesterday's board meeting, the board discussed and approved the creation of an Infrastructure SIG. There are some details here - https://blog.centos.org/2020/09/board-approves-creation-of-infrastructure-s… - but much still needs to be figured out. The main goal here is to move some operational things out of the Board's purview, and into a working group that can move more quickly, and delegate more broadly, while still being under board oversight. Aoife Moloney, who you may know from her weekly "CPE Weekly" mailings, has taken the initial role of SIG Chair for that group, which doesn't mean that she's doing all the work or making all the decisions, but, rather, that she's kind of a project manager for the group. As the last paragraph of the blog post says: "We welcome participation and comment from anyone with the skills or interest to be helpful, particularly if you are already administering any of the infrastructure that the CentOS project relies on." This is not an attempt to take any work away from those already doing it, rather to create a group where that work can be coordinated and tracked, so that the board knows what's going on, without having to have their hands directly in the process.

repo_gpgcheck for centos repos?

Hi, I wonder if it would be not beneficial enabling repo_gpgcheck for all centos repos? A short cross check shows that also SIG repos have repomd.xml signed. mirror.centos.org has no TLS enabled and repo_gpgcheck would add an additional security layer per default? This could be started for EL8? Or are there any barries? -- Thanks Leon

CPE Quarterly Feedback Survey Results

Hey folks, I want to thank everyone that took the time to complete the survey for us. Even more so for those of you that left comments to help give us extra info and context, this is invaluable. The flip side is, it takes a little time to work through and that's what we're doing right now. A few pieces we can acknowledge off the bat though: - Mediums of communication were overwhelmingly positive for weekly email lists and blog posts. 76% for the emails and 46% for blog posts respectively We're discussing how to improve these even further at the moment as well as tweak the PO office hours and wind down the Taiga boards as these were significantly less popular. 14% for the PO office hours and 1% for the Taiga boards. - Transparency of decisions and communications. You want more of the former and streamlining on the latter. We hear you and will aim to deliver this alongside the first point above. - Overall (82%+ reponses) you feel we did a good job since April of this year. We appreciate the level of confidence you've shown in us and our desire is to continuously improve this with your feedback.
