Hi, Earlier in the evening today Ralph, Fabian and I had a chat about the present state of the language subsites. This email sort of summarises the main issue ( s/w ). We seem to have run into a slight technical hitch with punbb/fluxbb. They dont support LDAP as a backend. And we had decided a few months back that all new rollouts must have ldap backend so we can rollin CentOS-DS / openldap based backend. So we need to look at alternatives, and since the primary focus of these international sites is going be forums : Here is a shortlist ( if there is anything else that people are aware of, please add to this list ) - phpBB - SMF - Fudforum - phorum - fluxbb Requirements: - Must be able to scale ( couple of hundred thousand msgs ) - Must be able to handle ldap auth ( if it cant, whats involved in writing the ldap-auth portion ) - Must address the specific requirements raised by the present www.centos.org forum users ( Can you please fill this section in ? ) - Must support all languages we need ( pure utf8 support would be good ) - Secure - Skin'able Nice to have: - Capable of running multiple instances from a single deployment - responsive community :D Things we will need to do: - Decide on what s/w to use. - Give the ArtWork people enough time to get the look & feel sorted. - Migrate newbb forums from www.centos.org to $system ( hey, english is a language too :D ). - Migrate fr.centos.org into the final s/w - setup {de/es/ja/it/pt_br}.centos.org Actions: Ralph and Fabian are going to work on setting up a test ldap server, once that is online we will then start by installing into our test-vm-farm the various s/w to eval them. If anyone would like to help, please feel free to jump right in. Proposal: CentOS Public Board Meetings

In January of 2021, the CentOS Board of Directors opened our monthly meetings to all SIG chairs, in a first step towards more transparent governance. We wanted to see how the larger audience changed the meeting dynamics, if at all, as well as welcoming a broader pool of voices. We are now ready for the second part of this process. Starting in the August meeting, we will be inviting the entire CentOS community to attend these meetings. Due to the nature of the Internet, we won’t be simply publishing the meeting URL, as this often leads to disruptive behavior in meetings, as I am sure many of you have experienced. Rather, in the week before the meeting, we’ll send, to this list, a way to request an invitation to the meeting. In this way, we hope to limit the incidence of such disruptions, while also making the meeting available to anyone who wishes to attend. We will be working on the rules of engagement for these meetings, but they will be, at minimum: * Wait to be recognized by the Chair before speaking * Respect the Chair when told your time to speak is over - this will allow us to remain on agenda, and complete the meetings in the allotted time * In the event that there are Board-confidential topics, these will be put at the end of the meeting, in Executive Session, and guests will be asked to leave. We hope to minimize these items, but they do sometimes happen. The most common scenarios in which this may happen are personnel issues, or information that Red Hat wishes to share with the Board, but is not yet public. * Muting of participants, or, in extreme situations, ejection from the meeting, is at the sole discretion of the Chair. * Meetings will be recorded, and published to YouTube (possibly with edits/redactions, as approved by the Directors). Thus, by joining the meeting you consent to have your presence at the meeting, and anything you say during the meeting, made public. Because there will seldom be time for Q&A during the meeting itself, we plan to add a post-meeting IRC office hours session for followup questions. This will probably be scheduled for a week after the board meeting, to allow time to publish meeting minutes We welcome your comments about the above proposal, and thank you all for your patience as we implement these changes to our governance process.

CPE to staff EPEL work

We are pleased to announce that Red Hat is establishing a small team directly responsible for participating in EPEL activities. Their job isn't to displace the EPEL community, but rather to support it full-time. We expect many beneficial effects, among those better EPEL readiness for a RHEL major release. The EPEL team will be part of the wider Community Platform Engineering group, or CPE for short. As a reminder, CPE is the Red Hat team combining IT and release engineering from Fedora and CentOS. Right now we are staffing up the team and expect to see us begin this work from October 2021. Keep an eye on the EPEL mailing list[1] and the associated tracker as we begin this exciting journey with the EPEL community. CentOS Stream 9 content available for cbs.centos.org : start your builds !

Hi, Long awaited feature request is now implemented on https://cbs.centos.org : you can now start requesting 9s tags to build against/for CentOS Stream 9 ! I already created some tags/targets for SIGs that already requested it some time ago through our dedicated infra tracker (reminder: https://pagure.io/centos-infra/issues) Worth knowing that the following repositories are enabled by default for all newly created 9s tags: - BaseOS - AppStream - CRB What's possible to add ? I know that for 8/8s some SIGs (like Cloud SIG for openstack) rely on other repositories, like HighAvailability , or others. Feel free to ask such repositories to be added to your build tags. It's also possible to build against CentOS Stream 9 buildroots if the pushed repositories don't include all -devel / runtime packages that you need at buildtime. For that, consider also asking for it if/when needed. Important ! Due to the way Stream 9 will be delivered (more news on that later, probably through Brian and/or Carl), I have locked all -release tags for 9s. What does that mean ? That you can build pkgs, and also tag to -testing (that will go out as usual to buildlogs.centos.org) but not to -release (even if tag is created already). Once we'll have figured out how to properly sign+push SIG content out, we'll announce the plan and also unlock the -release SIG tags Stay tuned for more information about that soon. Announcing centos-plus repo for 8-stream

We used to have a "plus" repository for CentOS 7 and 8, that contained packages from OS, but rebuilt differently. Most known examples in CentOS 8 plus repository are the kernel-plus and thunderbird (with openpgp support). As CentOS 8 is going EOL end of this year, and that some us still need to rely on that specific thunderbird package, we agreed to just use the SIG process for the plus repository, instead of having such packages being built through the distro builders. So if you're already on CentOS Stream 8 , you can just install (like for other SIGs) a specific package containing both the .repo file *and* needed gpg key used to sign the packages. How to enable/use it ? : sudo dnf install centos-release-plus -y As stated in /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Stream-Plus.repo, you can now enable it (remember that it can overwrite base packages, reason why we also ship it as disabled) sudo dnf config-manager --enable centos-stream-plus You can now install pkg from it, like thunderbird : sudo dnf install thunderbird Tip: if you want to just use some pkgs from one specific repo, you can also just use excludepkgs/includepkgs statements in your .repo configuration (see https://dnf.readthedocs.io/en/latest/conf_ref.html#options-for-both-main-an…) -- Fabian Arrotin The CentOS Project | https://www.centos.org gpg key: 17F3B7A1 | twitter: @arrfab

Missing thunderbird 91.2.0-1 "plus"

Just noticed thunderbird 91.2.0-1.el8.plus is not available in the "plus" repo for CentOS 8. It does exist for CentOS 7. The plus release keeps encrypted email functional in the new 91.x ESR release by not removing a library RHEL doesn't want to ship/support. If there are other workarounds/things to install to make the non-plus version work, I would appreciate the info. Thanks!

RDO is suitable for building private, public, and hybrid clouds. Xena is the 24th release from the OpenStack project, which is the work of more than 1,000 contributors from around the world. The RDO community project curates, packages, builds, tests and maintains a complete OpenStack component set for RHEL and CentOS Stream and is a member of the CentOS Cloud Infrastructure SIG. Updates ------- * Work continues on Content Resolver buildroot support * We're now running repoclosure before we sync to the mirrors ## Datanommer/Datagrepper V.2 Goal of this Initiative ----------------------- The datanommer and datagrepper stacks are currently relying on fedmsg which we want to deprecate. These two applications need to be ported off fedmsg to fedora-messaging. As these applications are 'old-timers' in the fedora infrastructure, we would also like to look at optimizing the database or potentially redesigning it to better suit the current infrastructure needs. For a phase two, we would like to focus on a DB overhaul. Updates ------- * Import crashed because of a database schema design decision that didn’t account for the size of our messages, it's fixed and the import started again because the schema update on existing data would take a lot of time too. ETA is back to 70 days. ## CentOS Duffy CI Goal of this Initiative ----------------------- Duffy is a system within CentOS CI Infra which allows tenants to provision and access bare metal resources of multiple architectures for the purposes of CI testing. CentOS Stream 9 is available in CI infra for tenants/projects

For people not following inititial infra ticket about this (https://pagure.io/centos-infra/issue/441) here is a quick status about CentOS Stream 9 availability in CI infra : Starting from today, each tenant in CI infra can request Stream 9 for the x86_64 architecture. Due to lack of compatible hardware for ppc64le, it's not available yet but we hope to be able to provide it before end of this year. aarch64 is on the list of architectures to be tested and added (more on that when it will be ready) We already updated the python-cicoclient to correct version on the previous Virtual Machines setup behind ci.centos.org but we still have (next on the list) to update the cico-workspace container/image to include newer python-cicoclient (see http://mirror.centos.org/centos/7/infra/x86_64/infra-common/Packages/p/pyth…) that is used in the openshift/ocp 4 cluster Enjoy your tests on Stream 9 ! CentOS Stream 9 "launch" promotion

We are now at the point in the CentOS Stream 9 process that we need to do some kind of a "launch" promotional effort, so that people are aware of the work that is being done here beyond the "Coming Soon" message on the download page. If you are willing to participate in this effort, we will be coordinating on the centos-promo mailing list - https://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos-promo - so if you're not subscribed, this is a good time to do so. We will be initially producing two things: * A blog post for blog.centos.org (and possibly one for a redhat.com property as well) * Web content that will go at centos.org/stream9 Initial notes about what we're creating are here: https://hackmd.io/RkOiWNmIQcWSubQ3emY0lg We would like to produce this content within the next month - end of November latest. October CentOS Dojo - Event report

Thanks to all who attended, and spoke at, last week's CentOS Dojo. We had 126 registrations, and 77% turnout. (Apparently average turnout is something like 51% for free virtual events) Our peak attendance at any one time was 51. As pre-announced on the centos-devel list in another thread, and also per Automotive SIG request (https://pagure.io/centos-infra/issue/458) , we'd like to announce new https://sigs.centos.org virtual host, rendering SIG documentation (if they want to) The system is based on markdown documents, rendered through mkdocs (https://mkdocs.org) How can you request your SIG namespace on it ? # prepare a git repository with your .md files and a mkdocs.yml file (see https://www.mkdocs.org/getting-started/) # create a centos-infra ticket on https://pagure.io/centos-infra/issues with : - sig name and description - git origin for your project (where your .md files are stored) : it can be wherever you want, so github, gitlab, pagure.io or even git.centos.org if you ask for a project to be created there for your SIG # once created (by ansible), your content will be automatically rendered and visible under https://sigs.centos.org/<sig_name> (example : https://sigs.centos.org/hyperscale/ , already "live") Once you'll have just accepted PR or pushed commits to your git repository, it will be picked up, rendered and push to https://sigs.centos.org vhost. Today, I'm pleased to announce we've refreshed the images we released at the end of July[2]. Like that release, this one includes both GNOME and KDE Workstation variants. Since CentOS repositories use non-standard DNF vars in the repository paths, PackageKit was not able to resolve them. This bug was reported over a year ago (and fixed in PackageKit upstream!), but despite having a patch to fix it, it has not been fixed, so we now ship a patched PackageKit to resolve the problem. The Red Hat bug describes the issue and has a fix for it included: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1847124 The remaining issues are expected to be the same as the previous release[2]. If you find any other issues, we would definitely love to hear about them! It’s responsible for services running in Fedora and CentOS infrastructure and preparing things for the new Fedora release (mirrors, mass branching, new namespaces etc.). The ARC (which is a subset of the team) investigates possible initiatives that CPE might take on. Update ------ ### Hardware Updates * Warranty renewal season for both Fedora and CentOS Infra, which means we are looking at the hardware that needs attention. ### Fedora Infra * Infra and Releng team is working with other initiatives team members to handover maintenance tasks * Started moving forward again on updating our dnssec keys * Issues with openqa-x86-worker04 machine ongoing * Planning a mass update/reboot cycle next week tentatively * 66 issues open (many to close as the freeze lifted) ### CentOS Infra * https://sigs.centos.org announced on the centos-devel list * Updated ci.centos.org Jenkins to comply with security compliance * Collaboration with Stream team for infra tasks (including for beaker/ftp) * Business as usual * New tags in cbs/koji (automotive, cloud) * New projects on git.centos.org ### Release Engineering * Fedora 35 Beta out the door! Freeze ended ## CentOS Stream Goal of this Initiative ----------------------- This initiative is working on CentOS Stream/Emerging RHEL to make this new distribution a reality. The goal of this initiative is to prepare the ecosystem for the new CentOS Stream. Updates ------- * Working on Content Resolver buildroot logic integration * Metalinks for CentOS Stream 9 mirrors works now * An updated centos-release package exercising the new mirror infra is built, we expect it to be composed in the next couple of days * Starting some investigations to help maintainers work with GitLab * Reworking some of the protocols that we announce internally for our composes (Beaker needs to pull the composes via FTP or tftp) ## Datanommer/Datagrepper Goal of this Initiative ----------------------- These apps are currently used to retrieve historical information about messages on the fedmsg bus and add them to a Postgres database. Datanommer reads-in messages from the bus and stores them in the database and Datagrepper exposes the messages in the database via an API with different filtering capacities. We want to upgrade these applications to use fedora-messaging and increase the performance of the applications for users. Updates ------- * Import script is still running, the ETA of ~2 months seems to be confirmed * We’re doing the finishing touches to code ## Metrics for Apps on OpenShift Goal of this Initiative ----------------------- The project team will deliver on the installation of newest OpenShift in Fedora infra to be then configured with prometheus so applications can be hooked into this service and can be monitored and metricized through this tech stack for more comprehensive understanding of app behaviour, performance and troubleshooting. Updates ------- * A lot of work in docs - SOP docs merged https://pagure.io/infra-docs-fpo/pull-request/8 * We’ve enabled the user-workload-monitoring stack on the staging cluster, and began documenting it * We’ve disabled the default permissions that users get when they login on the staging cluster and started documenting that too * A few things are not quite right like network interfaces, but we have the basic production cluster up and running * Working to get the web console working, but in the meantime can use the CLI on the os-control01 node: https://console-openshift-console.apps.ocp.fedoraproject.org/ ## DNF Counting Goal of this Initiative ----------------------- The DNF Counting project will enhance the currently existing program that captures a ‘countme’ value from computers running Fedora weekly. There are multiple scripts running from a server which parses the data into a csv file for graphing and displaying trends that had been misbehaving a lot. This program gives a good indication for how many computers use Fedora so the project team will work on improving these scripts and the program overall to make it a more reliable and maintainable solution. [REPORT] Automotive SIG

October 2021 Quarterly report submitted by: Jefro Osier-Mixon, Red Hat - acting chair _____________________________________ Membership update (members added, removed. Chair changes.) This SIG is new, and as such does not have a formal membership process yet. The mailing list currently has xx subscribers representing at least yy companies. I have been asked to act as chair for the first few months in order to stabilize the SIG. _____________________________________ Releases in the most recent quarter (or most recent release, if none in that quarter) The SIG is not yet creating builds or publishing releases, but we hope to do so in the next quarter. _____________________________________ Health report and general activity narrative. The SIG has had two public meetings since approval, each with roughly 40 attendees representing at least 8 separate organizations. We feel this is a good start at corporate community diversity but will continue to work toward a community-driven project that is not dominated by Red Hat - this is intended to be a community effort with contributions and shared benefits from all participants. One notable participant is the Automotive Grade Linux project (AGL). Also noted are several OEM automakers and a few tier-1 suppliers, so interest is clearly piqued. Several RH employees are working on the first contribution to the project as well as the infrastructure required to build and test it.
