anaconda dependency calculation?

Hi all, I'm trying to find a tool that calculates all dependencies for a specific package or group of packages for use with CentOS 5 (beta) with the intention of putting together a custom single CD build of CentOS 5. With CentOS 4 i used a python script that used the hdrlist module to find all dependencies which borrowed code from a number of sources. I've looked at yumdownloader and how it checks dependencies (using the --resolve option) but if i pass it the list of packages defined in say the Base and the Core yum groups which generally form an absolute minimal install i end up with about 200 packages. If i do a custom install (using beta 1 disks) and deselect everything i end up with over 300 packages. So i'm guessing anaconda calculates dependencies in a slightly different way, can anyone point me to files/code where i should be looking to find out? Hi, Earlier in the evening today Ralph, Fabian and I had a chat about the present state of the language subsites. This email sort of summarises the main issue ( s/w ). We seem to have run into a slight technical hitch with punbb/fluxbb. They dont support LDAP as a backend. And we had decided a few months back that all new rollouts must have ldap backend so we can rollin CentOS-DS / openldap based backend. So we need to look at alternatives, and since the primary focus of these international sites is going be forums : Here is a shortlist ( if there is anything else that people are aware of, please add to this list ) - phpBB - SMF - Fudforum - phorum - fluxbb Requirements: - Must be able to scale ( couple of hundred thousand msgs ) - Must be able to handle ldap auth ( if it cant, whats involved in writing the ldap-auth portion ) - Must address the specific requirements raised by the present www.centos.org forum users ( Can you please fill this section in ? ) - Must support all languages we need ( pure utf8 support would be good ) - Secure - Skin'able Nice to have: - Capable of running multiple instances from a single deployment - responsive community :D Things we will need to do: - Decide on what s/w to use. - Give the ArtWork people enough time to get the look & feel sorted. - Migrate newbb forums from www.centos.org to $system ( hey, english is a language too :D ). - Migrate fr.centos.org into the final s/w - setup {de/es/ja/it/pt_br}.centos.org Actions: Ralph and Fabian are going to work on setting up a test ldap server, once that is online we will then start by installing into our test-vm-farm the various s/w to eval them. Few questions on cloud images

Hello, I have few questions related to the cloud images provides for c8s and c9s, i.e.: - https://cloud.centos.org/centos/8-stream/x86_64/images/ - https://cloud.centos.org/centos/9-stream/x86_64/images/ 1) I see the c9s images are regularly updated, while the c8s images not; is this wanted, or simply a mistake/miss somewhere? If so, will they be kept up-to-date just like the c9s images? 2) are the Vagrant images there officially supported? Let's say you use one, and find a bug; then check on a "classic" installation (baremetal/VM), and the bug isn't there; can users report problems in those cases? 3) would it be possible to have either unversioned or "-latest" symlinks for the latest versions of all the files (i.e. images, checksums, etc)? This way, it will be much easier for users to fetch the latest versions with no need to change URLs frequently. Of course, the assumption is that users of this are always willing to use the latest version. Thanks! -- Pino Toscano

Proposal: CentOS Public Board Meetings

In January of 2021, the CentOS Board of Directors opened our monthly meetings to all SIG chairs, in a first step towards more transparent governance. We wanted to see how the larger audience changed the meeting dynamics, if at all, as well as welcoming a broader pool of voices. We are now ready for the second part of this process. Starting in the August meeting, we will be inviting the entire CentOS community to attend these meetings. Due to the nature of the Internet, we won’t be simply publishing the meeting URL, as this often leads to disruptive behavior in meetings, as I am sure many of you have experienced. Rather, in the week before the meeting, we’ll send, to this list, a way to request an invitation to the meeting. In this way, we hope to limit the incidence of such disruptions, while also making the meeting available to anyone who wishes to attend. We will be working on the rules of engagement for these meetings, but they will be, at minimum: * Wait to be recognized by the Chair before speaking * Respect the Chair when told your time to speak is over - this will allow us to remain on agenda, and complete the meetings in the allotted time * In the event that there are Board-confidential topics, these will be put at the end of the meeting, in Executive Session, and guests will be asked to leave. We hope to minimize these items, but they do sometimes happen. The most common scenarios in which this may happen are personnel issues, or information that Red Hat wishes to share with the Board, but is not yet public. * Muting of participants, or, in extreme situations, ejection from the meeting, is at the sole discretion of the Chair. * Meetings will be recorded, and published to YouTube (possibly with edits/redactions, as approved by the Directors). Thus, by joining the meeting you consent to have your presence at the meeting, and anything you say during the meeting, made public. Because there will seldom be time for Q&A during the meeting itself, we plan to add a post-meeting IRC office hours session for followup questions. This will probably be scheduled for a week after the board meeting, to allow time to publish meeting minutes We welcome your comments about the above proposal, and thank you all for your patience as we implement these changes to our governance process.

Does Red Hat publish EUS source?

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux#Extende… I do see that EUS source packages are available to customers in the errata portal, but I was looking at the article for Red Hat Enterprise Linux on Wikipedia, and saw a note there to the effect that rebuilds don't publish updates from EUS because Red Hat doesn't publish it for rebuilding. I vaguely recall that CentOS pulled source from an FTP source that the claim might describe, but I can't find any information that I think is really conclusive. The question is mostly trivia, but if the claim on Wikipedia isn't accurate, then I'll update that page.

Dist-git's git structure in CBS

Good Morning Everyone, Nowadays we have different structures in the git repositories of the dist-git instance for CBS and for CentOS-Stream. CBS' dist-git (used by the SIG and for CentOS Linux 7, CentOS-Stream 8), uses something like: ├── .gitignore ├── .kernel.metadata ├── SOURCES │ ├─ .... │ ├── patch-5.14.0-redhat.patch │ ├─ ... │ └── x509.genkey.rhel └── SPECS └── kernel.spec Ie: patches and other sources in a SOURCES folder, spec in a SPECS folder and the link between the git repo and the lookaside cache is done via the `.<packagename>.metadata` file. source: https://git.centos.org/rpms/kernel/tree/c8s On CentOS-Stream 9, the structure is similar to Fedora's structure where everything is in the top directory. source: https://gitlab.com/redhat/centos-stream/rpms/kernel I was wondering if there has been some thoughts given on harmonizing these structures? I am particularly interested on changing them for SIG building on the top of CS9. It would make pulling changes from gitlab onto the SIG's repo a lot easier I believe. I suspect there may be some work to do for this and if I'm pointed to the right direction, I wouldn't mind having a look at it but first I'd like to know if it's a good idea :) So... what do you think? SIGs / cbs.centos.org change proposal

Recently, the Hyperscale SIG created an infra ticket about a proposal to change the rpm 'vendor' macro to be more specific than 'CentOS' for pgks built on https://cbs.centos.org . For details, you can read https://pagure.io/centos-infra/issue/621 I think it's a very good idea as we also started to show a difference between distro (/9-stream) vs SIGs (on mirror.stream.centos.org) so also doing that at the rpm level (already using a different gpg key anyway) would be easy enough to modify. Here is our proposal : define the default value for that rpm macro to 'CentOS Community Build Service' instead of 'CentOS'. It's also possible to request a specific override (what we tested with Hyperscale tags) and I'd even think it would be better to create directly each new tag with a common pattern like 'CentOS <sig_name> SIG' , which would be easy to automate when we have to create new tags. rseq in glibc coming to CentOS Stream 9

The only way to implement sched_getcpu efficiently on AArch64 is to use rseq and the per-thread CPU field in the rseq area. Unlike other architectures, there is no vDSO acceleration for sched_getcpu or getcpu on AArch64, and there does not seem to be a special register available that could be used for this. (E.g., on x86-64, the kernel uses otherwise-unused segment limits; access is not particularly fast, but at least there is no system call involved.) No application changes are needed to benefit from this optimization, and even architectures with existing vDSO acceleration benefit (slightly). Upstream glibc will enable rseq in the upcoming 2.35 release, and while we are not putting that glibc version into CentOS anytime soon, we have backported the rseq acceleration for sched_getcpu to CentOS Stream 9, glibc-2.34-19.el9 to be precise: glibc: Optional sched_getcpu acceleration using rseq <https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2024347> However, Fedora rawhide testing revealed an integration issue with CRIU: Implement rseq support, as required by glibc 2.35 <https://github.com/checkpoint-restore/criu/issues/1696> criu: Implement rseq support <https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2033397> Therefore, we currently do not enable rseq acceleration by default, but we plan to do so in the future, once CRIU fixes are available in relevant places. Therefore, applications need to be launched with the GLIBC_TUNABLES=glibc.pthread.rseq=1 environment variable for the time being to benefit from rseq-based sched_getcpu acceleration. This time, no bad seccomp interactions are expected because we leaned on browsers a while back to fix their sandboxes. Container engines should not be impacted because the glibc integration treats an initial EPERM failure of the rseq system call as an indicator that rseq is not available. (Only success for the first rseq system call followed by failure for rseq system calls on newly created threads is problematic; this part needed fixing in browser sandboxes.) A few applications which currently use rseq will need integration with the new glibc way of doing things if they want to keep benefiting from rseq. Mathieu Desnoyers is enhancing librseq; direct consumers such as tcmalloc will need to be updated separately. I do not know yet how the interaction between CentOS Stream 9 glibc and these applications will look like because we have not backported the public rseq symbols that glibc is adding in glibc 2.35 (__rseq_offset, __rseq_size, __rseq_flags). The current downstream glibc default (without GLIBC_TUNABLES=glibc.pthread.rseq=1) is not to use rseq at all, leaving it available for application use, so we have some time to figure out the details. I found them in https://mirror.interserver.net/centos/7/updates/ instead of https://mirror.interserver.net/centos/7/updates/x86_64/Packages/ And thus, are not found by yum. Welcome to Shaun McCance, our new community manager

As many of you are aware, I have been serving as the Community Manager for the CentOS project for the past 3 years, having been appointed to this position by the Board in the April 2018 board meeting. Over the coming weeks, I will be moving to a different position (still within the Open Source Programs Office at Red Hat, but doing something different) and Shaun McCance will be moving into this role. Shaun has extensive experience in open source projects, including decades with the Gnome Foundation. He works for the Red Hat OSPO, and is based in Ohio, USA. The past 3 years have been challenging, interesting, difficult, and rewarding. And although the past year has been very, very hard, I am very proud of what we have accomplished together as a community: * Community-nominated board (see my next email for more about this!) * Public/Open board meetings * New SIGs! (Automotive, Infrastructure, kmods, Hyperscale, Feature Request) * Contribution path via CentOS Stream * Code of conduct * etc So, thank you all for your support and encouragement over the past 3 years, and for participating in all of the above initiatives and so much more. And please welcome Shaun, and give him just as much (or more!) encouragement as he takes on this important role and helps guide the community. --Rich

I am working to release an update set for CentOS Linux 7, it contains openssl-1.0.2k-23.el7_9, which has this bug reported: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2039993 There is also this article: https://access.redhat.com/solutions/6637201 (requires an access.redhat.com subscription) The current update set is currently in QA testing. It may fail and not be able to be released .. in which case we wouuld remove openssl and try again to get it to pass tests. I just wanted to get this out there in case anyone has issues. [REPORT] Automotive SIG

January 2022 Quarterly report submitted by: Jefro Osier-Mixon, Red Hat - acting chair _____________________________________ Membership update (members added, removed. Chair changes.) This SIG does not have a formal membership process. The mailing list currently has 77 subscribers representing at least yy companies. I have been asked to act as chair for the first few months in order to stabilize the SIG. _____________________________________ Releases in the most recent quarter (or most recent release, if none in that quarter) The SIG is not yet creating builds or publishing releases, but we are very close to doing so at this point; see the report below. _____________________________________ Health report and general activity narrative. The SIG has had two public meetings per month, one formal and one informal "office hours", each with 25-40 attendees representing 7-10 separate organizations. We feel this is a good start at corporate community diversity but will continue to work toward a community-driven project. This SIG is intended to be a community effort with contributions and shared benefits from all participants. Several RH employees made the first contribution to the project as well as the infrastructure required to build and test it. We now occupy a gitlab repository building software regularly, with build instructions provided, and we are on track for a downloadable release in Q1 2022. This is a high-level summary of current activity from our technical lead: - The work keeps on going at: https://gitlab.com/redhat/automotive/automotive-sig - We have created manifests in that repository that can be used with OSBuild to create a number of images. - We currently support: - qemu and raspberry pi - x86_64 and aarch64, - ostree-based (default) and non-ostree-based - booting via uefi of by-passing it and booting directly the kernel - We then have 3 images - minimal - osbuilder (containing the tools allowing to build images with osbuild) - neptune (demo image with a graphical interface running the demo app: neptune) - The OSBuild manifests have been streamed-line and simplified a lot. If you have not look at them in a while have a look ! - We have also added a mechanism to easily build images from within a virtual machine, which makes it easier to build images without root privileges. - The VM created for the step just above (^) can also be migrated to a different system, thus allowing to build more easily in a different architecture. - Instructions on how to build images have also been greatly simplified The doc at: https://sigs.centos.org/automotive/building/ is up to date - We have a kernel-auto package based on the CentOS-Stream package and with the Real-Time patches included - We have a few koji tags set-up for the SIG, the kernel-auto is the main beneficiary of them (with a couple of other RT related packages) - We are working on automatically building some of our sample images and making them available. Note that, as of right now, we only have enough content for one day, and presumably if this doesn't change between now and then we'll drop Thursday and just have a one-day event on Friday. --Rich
