Ethernet device __tmpXXXXXXXXXX

I have a CentOS 5 system that started exhibiting the unusual behavior similar to that described in CentOS bug #2791. I my case, the interface that used to be eth0, with modprobe.conf line "alias eth0 8139too" and lspci listing "02:09.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)", now comes up like the bug symptom. After boot, ifconfig shows __tmp1654060624 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1D:09:6A:D8:1C BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 ... Humorously enough, it is possible to manually configure the interface using that name. And, using some "set -x" lines in the init scripts, I learned that this does not happen at boot time because the script cannot associate __tmp1654060624 with /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0. In the scripts the basic breakdown is that the "ip -o link" command returns the bogus __tmp device name; I'm not sure why, or how to fix this. A better workaround to getting the interface configured is to execute "ip link set __tmp1654060624 name eth0; service network restart" Unlike the bug, my setup always boots to a bogus device name (though the 10 digit number following __tmp always changes). I'm not sure what changed from when it booted to eth0 just fine (though I did have a power outage; but forced the fsck and everything, except this seems fine). The part I don't get is how the boot time "ip -o link" command gets the bogus device name. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks. Regards, Mark

Hi, ok - now I'm on the centos-devel list... :-) I have a small system hosting two MediaWiki's which are occasionally hit by a few users - its currently running CentOS 5.0, I plan to update it to 5.2 in the next days, and I could install PHP 5.2 for testing since it's not a mission-critical site. Since it's a virtual machine, I could also do the first steps in a "lab-like" environment on a copy. Would that be helpful? notify-daemon or notification-daemon?

Hi, In the comps.xml files of CentOS 5.1 and 5.2, there's a `notify-daemon' package in the `gnome-desktop' group, but I cannot find a `notify-daemon' package in CentOS 5.1 or 5.2 release, instead, there's a `notification-daemon' package. Is this a feature or a bug? Best regards, Hao

It also fits for the Promo SIG or others Under http://www.braincache.de/centos/CentOS_Styleguide_0.1-draft.pdf can be my first idea of an Styleguide wich could help to give a line of usage to some Grafics & design issues also as for Promo Stuff. I also have made a Banner http://www.braincache.de/centos/banner001.jpg how about other ideas? Comments? What about some slogans? What about "get it ... TODAY!" instead of "try it ... today!"? Wich one sounds better for you? sincerly Henrik P.S.: btw. can anybody give my write access to the Artwork area?! Then I can put in the text and other Logo-Stuff as mentioned in the ToDo list. Error removing java-1.6.0

Wrong documentation on PackageManagement/Yum/Priorities

Using CentOS 5.1. The page http://wiki.centos.org/PackageManagement/Yum/Priorities states that: "The priorities plugin is available from two locations: ... * The priorities plugin has been added to yum-utils since yum-utils 1.0.1. The version included with yum-utils works with both yum 2.4.x and 3.0.x. Installation instructions are provided in the README file that is included in the plugins/priorities directory of the archive." So I've installed yum-utils instead of yum-priorities and there is no plugin on that package. yum and fastestmirror

Can anyone think of a good reason why we should not make fastestmirror a direct dep for yum ? Its something that is well worth having and in 90%[1] of the cases, it will improve the user experience. - KB [1] Number pulled out of thin air - I have no facts or numbers to back that up.

New QA / Testing potential

Since there are quite a few people offering to help test apps /packages in CentOS - I am wondering if now is a good time to organise the CentOS-Testing repository and process a bit more. There are a *lot* of things that need looking at and pushing into the production repo's however a lack of testing feedback means they dont. Does anyone want to take this up ?
