Using Centos as embedded linux.

Dear all, I am newbie to Centos. I would like to know if it is possible to use centos on embedded devices. Has any one done any thing similar? Please do reply with any comments ... Regards Vishak V Kurup

CPU : intel Celeron M 1.60 Ghz DIMM : W/DDR 1GB ECC IDE(Primary Master) : Compact Flash (1 GB) IDE(Primary Master) : Compact Flash (256 GB) My confusion is that if it is possible to customize the CentOS for my application. Debian is very popular on ARM; I think I read it has more Linux system on ARM than on IA32!. The linksys wireless router, wrt54g runs Linux and there are alternative firmwares for it. That's also correct. But not because of the distribution I am blaming ARM. The performance got degraded very much in arm. I have worked with arm...but it is a night mare for me...i don't know from where all dependency problems comes...and also cross compiled libraries freely available ... were having many issues... my test machine was i686... and I had to port a gtk application in arm board ..the os I used was montavista linux ...many of may features did not work in board.. CentOS-5 Cross-Build Environment (arm, mips, sparc, others..) / pre-alpha released

Hi, folks. I've begun to work on a cross-build environment hopely to make CentOS 5 run on other architectures than supported by CentOS yet and that supported by the PNAELV. This project comes with a patch for the glibc 2.5 with added support for architectures like arm, mips, ppc, alpha, etc. to generate a cross-compile toolchain (cross-compilers, assemblers, linker/loader). It runs quite well with the Timesys 'tsrpm' tool (which is compatible with that project). Many RPMs does cross-build very well, but others fails on sanity checks, incompatible configure scripts, etc. (Kernel compilation is not included at this time.) Note that software created through that toolchain is not binary compatible to anything released by CentOS or the PNAELV. I want to switch to 'mock' and - I need a lot of help with its internals. The best enhancement were that 'mock' could recursively rebuild software entirely from source (using a yum repository that _only_ provides SRPMS). - only needing compiling natively (host-arch = target-arch). And there are many things to discuss at one event (glibc, cross-compiling, Kernels, automated RPM cross-(re)build machinery, repository management, yum-bootstapping, etc.) IMPORTANT: This is my first version - so please consider my project as unstable/pre-alpha. My wish is to make this project work as desired to bring CentOS to many more architectures and hopely to make it part of the CentOS project. This is leaned to Cross Linux From Scratch and is licensed under the terms of the GNU GPL v2. Thank you all for the enormous suggestions and information's ... I think I can go forward with the customization. Many suggested using Debian instead of CentOS... CentOS 4.6, buildinstall and bogl font problem

I'm trying to rebuild a custom 4.6 installer using /usr/lib/anaconda-runtime/buildinstall (from anaconda-runtime-10.1.1.81-1.centos4.1), but it gives the following warnings/errors: Creating bogl font.. zcat: /tmp/treedir.4539/instimage/usr/lib/bogl/font.bdf.gz: No such file or directory cat: /tmp/treedir.4539/instimage/usr/lib/anaconda-runtime/unicode-linedraw-chars.txt/disk1/distro/CentOS/4/i386/os/buildinstall.tree.4526/upd-instroot: line 939: /tmp/treedir.4539/instimage/usr/bin/reduce-font: No such file or directory: No such file or directory find: msgunfmt terminated by signal 13 find: msgunfmt terminated by signal 13 ...(repeats until)... find: msgunfmt terminated by signal 13 /disk1/distro/CentOS/4/i386/os/buildinstall.tree.4526/upd-instroot: line 940: /tmp/treedir.4539/instimage/usr/bin/bdftobogl: No such file ordirectory gzip: /tmp/treedir.4539/instimage/usr/lib/anaconda-runtime/loader/font.bgf.gz already exists; do you wish to overwrite (y or n)? ... and buildinstall waits until you type y or n. If you type "n", then you end up with an empty font.bgf.gz file ... It appears the /usr/lib/anaconda-runtime/upd-instroot script wants to create it's own font.bgf.gz, but it can't find the bits to do this. Also, /usr/lib/anaconda-runtime/loader/font.bgf.gz already exists as part of anaconda-runtime, so I'm not sure why it is trying to re-create this font file. I can hack /usr/lib/anaconda-runtime/upd-instroot to skip this, but I guess I must be doing something wrong as this shouldn't happen ... Thanks James Pearson

Use CentOSplus to carry latest GUI packages

I don't know if this has been talked about much in the past, but I was wondering if CentOSplus could be used to carry the latest stable versions of the GUI applications KDE/Gnome. These apps often lag behind quite a bit even on the selected stable branch upstream has chosen. For example, would it decrease stability to update KDE from 3.5.4 to 3.5.8? I think it would add to stability as long as you stay within that 3.5 branch, but upstream thinks otherwise and tries to re-invent the wheel by backporting 3.5.5-3.5.8 fixes into 3.5.4 which often don't work completely and have the potential of creating new bugs themselves. Another thing, Xen, the Xen package says it's 3.0.3, but looking at the SRPM it turns out it's the Xen 3.1 kernel with the Xen 3.0.3 'xm' and 'xend' dom0 utilities. In my book that's Xen 3.1, why not just fix the parts of the 3.1 utilities that broke between releases? Anyways Xen may not be a good candidate as others may have environmental dependencies on the upstream version, but upgrading to the latest minor version within a branch for a given application shouldn't break environmental dependencies, ie provide Xen 3.1.4 if it contains the xm and xend fixes that upstream was looking for. centos-release for 4.6

Something that is puzzling me - why is the centos-release RPM for CentOS4.6 called centos-release-4-4.4 - shouldn't it be named something like centos-release-4-6.X ? Also, the centos-release-4-4.4.src.rpm doesn't appear to be on 4.6 SRPM DVD ISO image ... James Pearson

Preview Xen 3.2 rc* packages

Xen 3.2 is in the final stages of preparation. We (Xen upstream) are planning to provide binary packages for Centos 5.1, amongs others. I've merged the patches and so on from xen-3.0.3-41.centos5.i386.rpm with a recent xen-unstable RC tip (16701:8922a1469284). With a bit of effort I have managed to get a set of packages which appear to be able to work at least in my simple `does this function at all' test. I'm mentioning it here so that you can have a look at what I've done and comment on it. We'll probably be making official upstream rpms very soon after the Xen 3.2 release, which we hope will be early next week. Please send me feedback either here on-list or privately. Most of the useful patches from 3.0.3-41.centos5 have been incorporated upstream so I just deleted those from my srpm. There were also a few changes which I have just dropped. In particular, the RHEL5 package (and thus the Centos one too) is a bizarre frankenxen containing a forward port of the 3.0 dom0 userland tools to the Xen 3.1 hypervisor. In my package I have included the hypervisor in the xen-*.rpm rather than making a kernel package too. This is more in line with practice upstream; dom0 kernel compatibility between the 3.1 and 3.2 hypervisors is good and the new hypervisor seems to work for me with the Centos 5.1 2.6.18-53.el5xen kernel. Xen 3.2 is still unreleased and in need of more testing.
